Well, in my limited sonic experience with them, which was LIVE at last years Chicago ProgPower event, I was duly impressed. They were versatile and great performer's. Generally, if I
like a band live, the recorded music should be a no-brainer, but the opposite is not true. That being said, I have yet to grab a POS CD yet, so... I'm still on the fence!

    <DIV></DIV>&gt;hey there folks,
<DIV></DIV>&gt; brief question about Pain of Salvation. i've heard LOT'S of talk
<DIV></DIV>&gt;about them here on the 'jam, and it's all been pretty positive. well, i
<DIV></DIV>&gt;hadn't heard anything by them until today, when i caught the video for
<DIV></DIV>&gt;"Ashes" from the album The Perfect Element. can someone please tell me
<DIV></DIV>&gt;that they get better than this?? granted, it's not a bad sond, but
<DIV></DIV>&gt;certainly nothing worth writing home about. the guitar solo at the end
<DIV></DIV>&gt;was impressive, but the song itself was pretty bland. now, i thought i
<DIV></DIV>&gt;remembered someone on here saying that The Perfect Element was one of
<DIV></DIV>&gt;their best albums. i'm hoping that this song was just one of the crap
<DIV></DIV>&gt;one's that seem to always wind up being the singles from an album. please
<DIV></DIV>&gt;tell me that it's get's better than "Ashes". also, and maybe this is just
<DIV></DIV>&gt;a result of it being a poor video, but the sound quality was similar to
<DIV></DIV>&gt;something that was recorded underwater. was this the fault of the video,
<DIV></DIV>&gt;or is that a "trademark sound" of P.O.S.??? i hope not. hope to get some
    <DIV></DIV>&gt;feedback. thanks a lot.

    >Jordan Rudess - Feeding the Wheel
    >Very highly recommended album.

    >Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever
    >Everybody needs this album.

I'll bite.....Rudess' album is spectacular at spots,
and very boring at spots....the first song (i'm
forgetting the titles now), opens up in a 70s game
show theme mood.....later on, there's a segment that
remind me of a cheesy rap song from the early
90s....in between and around that kind of crap,
there's some awesome riffs built upon typically solid
work from Bozzio, but there are just a few too many
cringe-worthy moments to be an unqualified recommend
    from me....

As for Transatlantic, I love this album, but I liked
it ever better before pulling SMTP:e out for
comparison's sake. THey sound more like a band this
time around.....less, "Spock's beard here, flower
kings section, let's give Mike a chance now....,"
although there are still moments where you can totally
tell who's doing the songwriting at that particular
moment. Where they regress is largely encapsulated by
the track "Suite Charlotte Pike." That jam session
thing was cool when it was encapsulated within "All of
the Above" from the first album, with a nice lead in,
and a great flow into the next segment of the song,
Stuck at the start of SCP, the jam session sounds like
just that, 4 guys jamming, not as a part of a song,
but just for the hell of it. As a separate track,
cool, but it just feels tacked on to SCP, which goes
on to have that weird, "his name is wonderful"
section, with Roine Stolt in full Euro lounge singer
    mode.....

The two 26 minute songs kinda drag, although not too
badly.....again, that may just be in comparison with
the mid-teen length tracks from the first album that
work so well....I just get the feeling that TA works
best at about 17 minute song lengths. Of course, All
of the Above is still my favorite TA song, so make of
    that what you will.

anyway, that's my quick and dirty take.....

Well, I dunno how much discussion this is, but I am definitely one of those
that differs with you on comparing the two. First off, the mix is much
better on this one than on the previous one. Also, I honestly think that
there are certainly more "catchy" songs on this one than there were on the
first one - thankfully Guillory co-wrote most of the tracks on this one.
Which brings me to one other point that I don't agree with - the Guillory
tracks are WAY better than the Shadow gallery and especially the Gardner
tracks. The only thing I like from Gardner was Explorer's Club and even that
got repetitive; thankfully he only contributes one song on MM2, tho it is a
step up from the garbage he wrote on the first one...

I agree wholeheartedly here. Very disappointed. The first one had a killer
vibe through the whole thing. The second is just kinda ho-hum/ going through
the motions, for a second album kinda thing. But James's voice does sound
    great on it though.

Question about the new Transatlantic: How similar to the first is it? I
kinda sorta enjoyed the first but haven't listened to it in ages. Will I
    enjoy the second?

That's a good point.... I'm so strange that I arrange my CDs by
alphabetical order. I probably should think about putting them in order of
my faves... but I dunno, I like the Alpha method a lot. heh
