Imagine to my surprise when I finally thought my comments (on the Mp3 thang) were
timely once again, only to realize, upon receipt of the new Ytsejam digest, I missed
the proverbial literary thread once again! Dammit! Damn dirty cyber gnomes! Anyhow,
now it seems like my thread is off into outerspace once again (a place I approach
many conversations from, to begin with). But that' sok, I shall catch up and MAINTAIN
exclusive rights to up-to-the-minute threads one of these days. What was I saying?
Anyhow, Not looking forward the to the new DT 3-CD set (a live cd with every studio
release?) BUT... the actual next STUDIO release.

You haven't heard? It's going to be 79 total minutes.
There's going to be a single "song" that is a medley.
There's going to 420 different tracks within that,
each a tribute to a different song. It will all be
brought together by the repeating melody from Wait for
Sleep, which will be played in 23 variations and
styles. I heard the album will be called "Wait for
Sleep Part 2: 420 Great Songs in One". ;o)

Is any of those variations played backwards?
That'd be cool...

Hey guys - I'm going over some old Jams and saw some people asking
about what Devin Townsend is up to lately. Well, nobody really said
much of anything so I guess it's up to me to extoll the virtues of
Devin.
Strapping Young Lad - This is Devin's first band and it can ONLY be
described as a wall of noise. Very industrial, brutal and layered.
Not progressive at all. The sound is very thick and features a ton of
Devin's signature screams. It gets old for me for a while, but
death-heads will really love this stuff. Get "City" first, then if you
like it, get the older one, "Heavy as a really heavy thing".
Sex and Religion - This is when Steve Vai decided to make a regular
"rock band" album. The songwriting is just amazing and Devin's
tortured vocals are a perfect compliment to Steve's fluid playing.
This album will always hold a special place in my heart.
Ocean Machine: Biomech - The pinnacle of Devin's career. Two words:
Heavy and smooth. Nothing industrial anymore. Just liquid soundscapes
of unimaginable beauty. This is the album that requires me to think of
Devin as a musical genius. Melodies that interweave leave the listener
pining for more. Devin's vocals are a wonderful mix of his thick,
husky clean voice, and his wonderful, rapturous cries for mercy. His
guitar playing is hypnotic and is backed by a wonderful supporting cast
as well. Not quite rock and not quite metal, if you own nothing else,
buy this CD.
Devin Townsend: Infinity - Dev was in a weird state of mind when he
wrote this and it reflects it in this bizarre CD. Very spastic.
Spanning from playful, happy antics to sublimely orchestrated anthems
of sadness. Not a very coherent album at all, but if you take each
song on their own, there is still his wonderful genius creeping
through. Get Ocean Machine first though.
Devin Townsend: Physicist - Dev has cleared his mind up with this CD
and it shows. It's heavier than everything but Strapping Young Lad,
but his maturity really is showing through now. Thickly orchestrated
(as always) with layers of keys, guitar and synth, and thickly
intertwined with his wonderful melodies. Not quite as memorable as
Ocean Machine, but still wickedly Devin.
Devin Townsend: Terria - His brand new album which I haven't gotten yet
(because he'll soon be releasing a special edition with a bonus track.
I'm holding out for that). Word is that he's done making metal albums.
Judging by the "new-age" artwork, he appears to be going towards his
Ocean Machine days again (and I certainly ain't complaining!).
Guys, Devin is one of the good guys of music. He definitely isn't
progressive at all, unless you REALLY want to contort the definition of
progressive. He's very unique and runs his operations out of the
basement of his Canadian home. I'm on their mailing list and they (Dev
and his wife, Tracy) are thoughtful enough to send out Christmas cards!
This guy definitely deserves my dollar and I hope some of you decide
to do yourself a favor and pick up one of his CDs. I suggest Ocean
Machine for most of you, and Strapping Yound Lad's "City" for the
thrash-heads.
He's done making metal, but he has a whole lifetime ahead of him of
making great music! Thanks for hearing me out!
- Dr. Teeth

Whoops! I forgot to mention where to get his music! Most of his CD's
are available at CDNow.com, but I have a hunch that he gets a bigger
cut if you buy CD's directly from his site: www.hevydevy.com
Thanks!

I'd hurry if if I were you.
The limited edition is already out, has a bonus disc of live stuff
(multimedia).

Not progressive at all ?
Are you kidding ?
His music is far more progressive than many prog acts mentioned here.
You mentioned already that a lot of his albums are different, now
isn't that progressive ?
OM is certainly, so is Terria, Infinity too.

I'm all for supporting the band by buying from Radiant, but not until they get thier shipping rates down. I'll be damned if I'm paying them $6 to ship a double cd or $12 to order four......Am I a cheap-ass?! Trevor
