No, nothing in that vein musically, unfortunately. I agree that that song's
just amazing. Possibly the most musically valid thing she's ever done.
But URS isn't about big, grandiose musical statements. Catchy melodies
supporting simply ASTOUNDING lyrics. I could so make love to that woman's
mind.

(with Tony Harnell of TNT fame handling vocal duties). Also, I thought "That
Particular Time" on URS comes pretty close to reaching the emotional heights
of "Uninvited." I wish more lyricists would take a cue from Alanis' style
(misuse of "ironic" aside).

Yes. None of the "ironies" in the song were actually ironic. Having your
wedding rained out isn't ironic, unless the bride is the weather girl at the
local TV station. The lyrics described a lot of bad luck and sad situations,
but, IRRC, none were actually ironic events.
This, from dictionary.com:
"Usage Note: The words ironic, irony, and ironically are sometimes used of
events and circumstances that might better be described as simply
coincidental or improbable, in that they suggest no particular lessons
about human vanity or folly. Thus 78 percent of the Usage Panel rejects the

August 8th turned out to be a hell of a night for prog fans, disenchanted 80's rockers, mullet wearing wanderers, and music snobs alike as Kings X, Dream Theater, and Satriani converged at the Dodge Theater in downtown Phoenix.
It's not often I get to mull around the atmosphere of oddball music fans donning clothes with pictures of progressive rock iconoclasts such as Zappa, Vai and Satriani, and those wacky "underground" groups that just never get their breaks with commercial radio such as Mr. Bungle, Fates Warning and Dream Theater. After about five minutes I had gotten my year's worth of this ambience and made the climb to the summit of this new performing arts venue to my balcony seat.
Special note to phoenix fans: Pay the extra cash and avoid getting balcony seats. The Dodge Theater is deceptively HUGE, and I found myself squinting to figure out who was who on stage the entire night. Apparently Douggie P. had purple dreadlocks, and all I could make out was a small spot of hair on the top of his bulbous head. Unless, of course, you're looking to get an excellent buzz from your alcoholic beverage fast and cheap; it's amazing how far a little oxygen deprivation can stretch one measely cup of beer....
Not that I uh, drank of course. Eckie's on a diet. :)
Kings X started off the party with a very short set...or maybe it just seemed short. 5 songs in all, and I'm not gonna tell you which ones they played. :) Unfortunately I could never really get into their recordings, but I was enjoying their set so much I wondered why I didn't listen to this band more often. It's long overdue for me to stock up on their catalogue. They were spot on. Incredible guitar work.
Dream Theater set up for their performance, and I swear Portnoy's drum set just seems to get bigger and bigger each time I see these guys. I'm expecting to see him at the next show with a double-decker bass drum set up with more snares and toms on a special rotating cage designed from the time/space portal contraption from Carl Sagan's "Contact." The toms would rotate at a certain speed and combust Mike's fro, causing his eyes to shoot laser beams, burning through LaBrie's tight pants and triggering an earth shattering vocal performance of "My Balls are Burning!!!" in G. The music from the end of Met2 blasts through the PA and quickly the all too familiar head pounding rhythm of Take the Time starts up. The show has begun.
Only a couple songs from 6 degrees were covered, I believe, and a lot of old material from the Images and Words days to Metropolis 2, Peruvian Skies being the only song off FII. Okay so I'm not spoiling too much, I just didn't bother recording what songs were played, I was there to enjoy the experience, damn it :)
Again, I couldn't make too many details out from my balcony perch (so much that I even missed Mike holding his daughter up above his kit so she could direct the audience into a clapping frenzy during one of the songs), and all I could make out of Petrucci was this black figure with massive biceps playing these flurries of chromatic, blue, red, and cubist notes...did this guy bulk up for the tour? Maybe it was just his outfit, or just my pitiful perspective, but the guy has some guns! Myung was amazing as always, and Rudess couldn't hit a bad note if he tried. And from really far away, James looked like a really beastly Brooke Shields.
They ended their set, and something like 1/4th of the audience left, leaving Satriani with a slightly diluted crowd...which confused the hell out of me. A few fans behind me were discussing their views on the lack of talent by people like Jimmy Page and the sloppiness of Hendrix during Satriani's set up.... Maybe it was the lack of oxygen circulating in their heads that caused such hysteria.
If you've seen Satriani live before, you know the cool/warm cozy personal vibe he brings to a performance. It was the same, except, he was better than the last time I saw him, and covered quite a bit of material (including Midnight!), a lot of it being older material with a couple songs on his beastly 7 string.
I never thought I'd live to see the day Satriani's exchanging his svelt 6 string steed for a 7 string tree. It was an excellent show over all. Definitely Groovy baby, YEAH!
Walking out of the Dodge Theater with that blissful grin you can only get after seeing these guys live, a solicitor hands me a flier for an "aftershow party" featuring Ray Alder's ENGINE at the Mason Jar. I was obliged to go and rock out for yet another hour with this very very heavy band. Very good performance and so unlike Fates Warning it's scary. Ray's just the fookin' man.
