Quite simply because he wanted to get out of the business. As to whether his
injury is real or if it was faked, I don't know, but I'm sure that his
reason for not continuing Megadeth is for that reason. Why do I say this?
Because I happen to be friends with one of his nieces, and she told me LONG
before TWNaH (and maybe even before Risk - can't remember for sure) that he
wanted to get out of the music business. When she told me this, I found it
hard to believe - and I found it even harder to believe when they signed to
Sanctuary. As to what he will do now, I'm guessing he'll continue with his
business pursuits. Jaime (his niece, and yes that's how her name is spelled,
even though it's pronounce "Jamie") had even mentioned that he was going to
be giving some sort of business seminars here in San Diego, during (I
believe) the break in between the Risk tour and the beginnings of TWNaH. As
to what these business seminars are about, I don't know.
As much as it may disappoint you, I'm guessing that Dave's pretty much
closing the musical chapter of his life and is now gonna pursue other
avenues of interest.

Just thought I'd give a little update on what I'm listening to, what I've been doing on my sabbatical from this big, throbbing list.
Not that it makes your oatmeal taste any better the next time you sit down for breakfast (there's only so much I can do, sorry), but maybe I can get a feeling on what the current listening habits of the Hobbits of the Ytseshire. And yes, I'm bored pointless.
I just turned 24 and have come quite a ways in maturing from my odd angst filled teenaged self, like a cactus flower, or a rebuilt 1933 Model AA Truck, or like a nubile young woman frolicking naked amongst a field of sprouting lillies and lilacs before she trips over the corpse of a rape victim that was hacked to pieces by the viciously sharp .75" blade of a lego hercules man three weeks prior. Well anyways, I'm not the screaming metalhead I used to be. I'm so much...more.
My balls have dropped, I'm singing along to Kevin Gilbert songs and thinking I can play piano like Thomas Freakin' Newman. What the hell happened here?
My top five list of all time great albums have changed in the past few years from
1. Master of Puppets
2. Awake
3. Passion and Warfare
4. Extremist
5. Rust in Piece
to
"I don't like to rate music like some police line up of cheap whores I'd like to tie up out back with some guitar string and play one legged naked twister with. These songs aren't meant to be rated, just enjoyed and taken for what they're worth. Sort of like what every girl I dated ever wanted but I ended up treating like a cheap whore in a police line up instead."
But I have been listening to tons of Kevin Gilbert (the guy was just genius), pick up Shaming of the True and enjoy if you haven't gotten into this masterpiece of a rock opera. Kaviar just came out, get that too. And Thud live. And Toy Matinee. So good, sweet, and juicy. Mmmmmmm.
Lots of movie scores, I find myself listening to Silvestri's Forrest Gump Suite, anything by Thomas Newman (American Beauty, Road to Perdition), and of course, the superb Howard Shore (GO GANDALF GO!).
I just got into Porcupine Tree, very rockin', not guitar intensive like DT or Kings X but very good nonetheless.
And no, I still have not started a band. I'm slacking on becoming a greatest guitar god of all time for ever and ever, but I'm still practicing in the mean time.
Flame away, I'll bring the martinis! You can't hurt an Arizonan with fire. :)
