Not necessarily. The best audio systems will highlight the defects in badly
recorded CD's, rather than making them sound good! You are right to take a
few CD's though. Make sure they are ones you know _really_ well. And just
carry on listening until you are happy.

You will be listening for several things, I look for warmth, speed, and
soundstage (which are probably mutually exclusive!). For warmth, try "Houses
Of The Holy", as TSRTS is a great song for testing hi-fi, so many textures
etc. You will also want to get an idea of speed, for this I would take
something quick and intricate, e.g. I+W, paying special attention to things
like the middle section of Metropolis, and the start of UAGM. And for
soundstage, something heavily orchestrated and overproduced, maybe "V" or
"Day For Night" by Spock's Beard. When you close your eyes, does it sound
like they could be in front of you?

    But that's just me. :-)

    Hi, all,

    1) Anyone else here going to the DT gigs at the Astoria in October? I've booked both nights...
    2) Any thoughts on what the "second night classic album" might be? I'm thinking one of the following:
     - Yes: Close To The Edge or Drama. Or 90125? 8{
     - Genesis: Selling England By The Pound (appropriate?) or Duke
     - King Crimson: Larks Tongues in Aspic or Red (pref.)

I lean strongly towards the KCrim. I wonder if Jordan can carry the Mellotron in the cabin, or will it need to go in the hold?

AAAH! I've just noticed they're coming to Dublin too, for the first time, the same day I have an exam! So that'll be three in a row, then. Anyone else booked for Dublin? I'll try now, see if it's not sold out..

    Cheers,

    Brian Thomson

Well, since we're so slow at the moment, I might as well go back into shameless self promotion mode! :)

I play keyboards in a band called Infinity Minus One and we just finished recording 4 songs that we've put up on our mp3.com site at http://mp3.com/infinityminusone If anyone on this list would like to give us a listen and let us know what you think, we'd love the feedback :)

It's in a progressive rock/metal type of vibe (while trying not to sound too typical) so it hopefully will appeal to some people on this list. There's the obvious DT influence, and there are also some strong Queen, Pink Floyd, and Zappa influences in there as well.

    Enjoy! :)

Kevin Moore and Jim Mattheos left for the Carriage House on August 17th, 2002, where Phil Magnotti will be mixing the album. Mixing should be done by August 25th, 2002. Phil has mixed a lot of Fates Warning material in the past. Two of the tracks will feature Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree on vocals.

They do do a few things right... video screens, CD mechanicals... but yeah, I have a Sony VCR and a Sony cordless phone and they're near-worthless. My Sony teevee rocks, though.

    > about 10-15 years ago. Could I incorporate those > into my setup; perhaps as my left and right rear speakers?

You could. You'll probably want to buy something that matches the rest of your speakers eventually, of course... same series, not just same-brand.

    > My local audio > store seems to carry Boston and PSB, and I know very little about either.

I've heard decent things about PSB, but haven't listened to their stuff myself. Boston Acoustics have a "one-tier-down" reputation, but again, I don't have much listening experience with them.

    > Are there any brands I should stay away from?

Blows. I mean Bose. There's a few laws of physics that need to be suspended for Bose designs to work as advertised. :-)

    > Any that tend to be better than the rest?

A speaker is the one component that is guaranteed to have a different sort of sound brand-to-brand. It's very subjective; listen to a few things and pick one you like. I'm partial to B&W (Bowers & Wilkins) speakers myself. I've helped my brother and a few friends around work with their stereo shopping... all those folks have chosen Paradigm brand speakers, so I'd assume they're a very good value for the money, too. A four-for- four record can't be wrong. :-) Infos at:

    http://www.bwspeakers.com http://www.paradigm.com

    > I know this is all very subjective, but I would love to hear > some opinions. I'd also like to stay in the $1,000 - $2,000 price range for > 5 speakers plus a sub.

I'm pretty sure you can do that with a few different Paradigm lines. The B&W 600 series might also fit... last I looked the 601s and/or 602s were sub-$250 speakers. They probably have a sub in that range, as well.

My original stereo system was an Onkyo tuner driving two B&W DM602s.

    > If anyone has any advise about the above items, or about home theater in > general, I'd really appreciate hearing it.

    General stuff...

Don't let the salesdroids sell you on expensive cabling. That's their highest-margin stuff; they'll try to sell you a system with about 10% or 20% of the cost in wires. It's pure profit for the store. Very basic Monster interconnects and off-the-roll 12- or 14-gauge wire is all you'll ever need, unless you live in the shadow of a radio transmitter tower or feel like spending 6 figures on speakers or something. My current, reasonably-expensive system has Radio Shack Gold interconnects and ordinary off-the-roll 12 gauge speaker wire.

The "sound" of a stereo system comes from the following, in order of importance: (1) The speakers, (2) The room, (3) the recording, (6) The source component, (14) the amplification, (703) the cabling. So, try to audition the stuff at home in your own room. Either get a loaner from the shop, or buy from someone who gives a no-questions-asked N-day return policy, at least for the speaks.

Components don't break in, listeners do. (Except automobile speakers.)

Subwoofers go in corners. Other speakers don't go up against walls.

If you're used to mass-produced low-fi stereo sound, don't expect "in your face" bass. Good stereos have clean, flat bass. Cheap Philips boom boxes have a big boost at about 100hz, even with the "bass boost" turned off.

The only instruments that really go below about 40 Hertz are timpani, bassoons, pipe organs, and synthesizers. If your sub isn't dancing around the room when you play your favorite metal CD, it's probably doing the right thing.

    > This will be me first HT and I > want to do it right the first time. I can't spend a fortune on audiophile > components right now, but I would like to buy quality components from a > reputable dealer (not Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.).

    Good plan.

    > Also, what CD's would you reccomend taking to sample different setups? As said before, a stereo that makes a poorly-produced CD sound good is hiding a bunch of sins and not reproducing the sound well.

I recommend a good cross-section of music that you plan to use the stereo for; all well-produced stuff. If you're going to listen to metal, jazz, and classical, you should take a bit of each along.

My "audition set"/"show-off-the-stereo set" consists of:

    1) Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes... solo voice or voice+piano can show off a lot of the sins of a poor speaker.

    2) The Gathering - How To Measure A Planet... there's a lot of interesting stereo effects on this one... I use it to point out soundstaging that extends "outside" the speakers. The MFSL pressing of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" does this pretty well, too.

    3) Marillion - Brave... there's a lot of stuff that gets lost in the "background noise" on this one; it can show off a speaker's resolution of quiet sounds during loud passages.

    4) Superior - Behind, DT - Awake... well produced metal stuff. Check if it can play loud and clean at the same time.

    5) Enya - Watermark, Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun... low bass. Good low synth stuff on these. (Yeah, Enya. I'm not joking.)

    > I'd love to hear some opinions.

You've heard mine. :-) Enjoy your shopping.

Someone asked for this review, so here goes:

First off, let me say that this is an excellent album all the way around. An equal mix of technical and progressive metal, there are no keyboards here, but they're not missed. The band was formed by twin brothers, who take up the guitar and bass posts and fill them admirably. Plenty of technique here. The drummer has some fast feet on the double bass and nails all of the plethora of odd time signatures. The singer is a truly gifted one, reminding me a bit of Dio. The music is complex and avoids the typical verse-chorus structure. Each song is more like an intense musical journey than your average song. This is story telling music. Think of a mix of DT, Fates Warning, and Spiral Architect. There are themes that repeat throughout the album in distinct and varying ways, almost like a leit- motif approach. This is a concept album, with an excellent set of lyrics. They are very well thought out and intellectual in nature. I'm not going to spoil any of the story for you, but it's a good one. If I had to rate the album, and writing a review kind of obligates me to, I'd rate it a must buy. It's that good.

Sorry that was so short, but I've got to get to a meeting.

    Matthew

Hey all. Question for the techies... I'm interested in expanding my gaming capabilities for obvious reasons. I have a Geforce 2 MX 400 which performs well but obviously is too outdated to play many games at more than 8-10 fps. I have some cash to blow, but obviously I'd rather not spend my life savings. I would like to invest in a Geforce 4 of some sort, and I don't think a Ti 4600 is gonna happen. Anyone have a Ti 4400 or 4200? Are they recommended? I know on ebay and through connections I could spend about 150 US on a 4200... and 200-220 on a 4400. Is that extra cash worth it for the 4400? Tech specs say that the 44 has like 25 more MHz clock and core memory speed, is there really a difference in performance, say on a game at like 1600x1200 with anisotropic filtering, 4x antialiasing and 32 bit color? I know those are all settings that are high up there, but to be able to play a game at those settings whereas the fps aren't suffering is certainly my goal =3D) Feel free to help me out in my shopping. m.S

I mean it's been discussed here before that Chris Jericho is a big DT fan, but I'm curious as to the other members of the band. ie, are they loaners from other groups doing a side project or what. Of course the sound sucked and Jericho's vocals weren't the best but all in all what I heard was pretty cool. I bought my stuff a few years ago. The total cost of the CD player, amplifier and speakers was about #1070. The guy offered to throw in the cables for free; I accepted, and haggled a bit further to get the final cost down to exactly #1000. I was quite happy. :-)

Be warned, Kevin's work after Dream Theater is WAY different than his work with DT.

I know those are all settings that are high up there, but to be able to play a game at those settings whereas the fps aren't suffering is certainly my goal =3D) Feel free to help me out in my shopping. m.S

The best thing you could do is not to buy a new video card, but upgrade your motherboard and processor. The GeForce2 is a card that requires you to have extra CPU power in order to work at high speeds, and if your processor is spending so much time trying to run the program, there aren't any cycles left to give to the graphics card. I noticed this happen when I tried to play Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. The funny thing about it was that I could play the game at ANY resolution or detail depth and the speed was the same. This showed me that my puny little GeForce2 Pro could have handled whatever it had had thrown at it, but my CPU was failing to free itself up for the graphics card.

I don't think that you would see a HUGE increase in speed--you'd probably see a slight or perhaps even marginal increase, and it's always a good idea to keep your hardward updated, but the best thing you could do for yourself is to upgrade to a stronger processor.

Another -great- website to watch out for prices on computer hardware is:

    www.pricewatch.com

This will compare prices from multiple sources and you get to find the lowest available price rather easily.

(CPU/Motherboard combos are very affordable right now! You can pretty much build a new high-speed PC just by upgrading your CPU and motherboard at the same time. We're talking $99 - $149 depending on the speed of the CPU).
