Hi all,
I remember when lurking on this list used to be a worthwhile exercise. Now
it's like watching paint dry, and it's really sad. I don't get it -
everyone goes on about the forums but Spock's Beard have a web forum and two
_very_ active mailing lists. Anyway no point ranting here I suppose.
I just thought I'd bring up Opeth in a vain attempt to stimulate some
discussion. I hadn't heard of them until someone brought them up on the
Thoughts list. I don't usually like cookie monster vocals, but I bought
Deliverance and what an outstanding record it is. Such a heady combination
of heaviness, melody, structure, and a total lack of cheese! The sound is
awesome, the performances are too.
It clicked in the car, blasting the riff at the end of the second track. I
couldn't stop grinning...
I would be shocked if no-one on this list has got the album - so what do
people think of it? For me it breathes new life into a metal genre that had
gotten really stale.

I recently discovered Opeth as well, and as a consequence have and love all
of their albums. They truly are something refreshing and innovative. My
personal favorite albums are Blackwater Park and Still Life.

If you liked Deliverance that much, RUN dont walk, RUN and get Still Life
and
Blackwater Park, if you have to choose between either, get still Life
first...i
swear youll have a fit!
Deliverance is awesome...but still IMO doesnt hold up to the genious that is
still life...
go for it! And yes i agree, Opeth are one of the few bands still making
relevant "metal" IMO

I only have Blackwater Park, I also think Opeth are very talented. One of
the few very heavy bands out there that have any depth to their sound. I
hope to get more of their titles soon.

Wow, so Deliverance isn't even a fluke? ;-) I will have to pick up the
others, then.
Do they tour? Europe? I would pay big money to hear this live.
And dare I ask... Are there any other bands in the genre (whatever genre it
is) that have similar levels of class and interesting, moving songs? Apart
from Hellhammer of course... ;-) Like I said, it is really strange for me
to like this kind of stuff - if anything my tastes are becoming less metal
as the years go by.
I hope everyone on this list is taking notice of this - they are one amazing
band.

I know there is an Opeth cult over at mp.com , so i guess they do appeal to
a lot of DT fans
Small tidbit for anyone who doesnt know, Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree
(which has toured with DT) produced
Opeth's last two albums (Blackwater and Deliverance) and did some vocals on
Blackwater park. Since he also did
some vocals (and im not sure if some production work too) on OSI, which MP
plays drums on, of course. Which means
that Opeth is sorta linked to DT by association :)
Also there is a small group of people who would love to see Steven Wilson
maybe get his hands on DT's next album, either
producing (which is not likely, since MP and JP have said they will never
work with an outside producer again, even though SW would be so choice!) or
mixing, which it would be awesome. If anyone has listened to Porcupine's
In Absentia, its one of the best sounding albums
EVER. I believe he can bring some cool stuff to the table if paired with
MP/JP for the next DT release...
How's that for discussion material? hehe

I agree definitely. I can hear Opeth's pre-Wilson stuff, and while it rocks
insanely, doesn't have the spaciness of Blackwater or Deliverance. You can
so tell when Wilson helped them out. I mean just LISTEN to the quiet parts
in Deliverance, or find the second main riff in the song Blackwater Park,
its SO in absentia!! Not that there's anything wrong with that at all...
In response to the post before, sure they tour. Check out opeth.com for
details, I know I'm gonna try and see them on Jan 17 with Paradise Lost and
2 other bands. That will be craziness incarnate!
