I got them off of usenet - alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.heavy-metal

They were posted on Monday - if you have access to a decent news server,
    they should still be there.

If DT covers another album, I'd like to hear Cygnus X-1+Hemispheres. Or
maybe Meddle by Pink Floyd. Why? 1. Serious improv could take place
during "One Of These Days." 2. "Fearless" is a seriously underrated
Floyd tune. 3. I'd like to hear what they would do with "San Tropez." 4.
Mike has said that he loves Echoes (didn't he say that while discussing
which prog epic to cover with Transatlantic?), and 5. There could be
some serious audience participation on the song "Seamus," which has a
dog howling along with the vocals. Or was that Roger Waters? ;)

    Take care,

The new issue of Classic Rock it out now, and it's got a very positive
review of DT's show in London last month.

And, Mike Portnoy has been voted "Best Other Musician" in the 2001
readers' poll. (Well, he didn't fit in the "Best Guitarist" category,
and there's no way on earth he's ever the "Best Singer").

Appropriately, the magazine also has a big feature on Metallica this
month, with the story behind the black album.

hey there, i know this probably sounds like a stupid question, but what is the easiest & best way to download mp3's (evil things) using Windows Media Player, MusicMatch Jukebox, and Winamp??? do these programs suck for this, and is there stuff out there that's better??? if so, then what?? thanks a lot.

downloading mp3s...you can try using WinMX, which you can download from www.cnet.com ive been using it. theres a lot of rare dream theater stuff on there, including a few FULL live bootlegs.

BAH, bloated and full of spyware! I use Morpheus (same thing as KaZza or whatever but no spyware) and Audiogalaxy. If you want to check your comp for spyware use tools found at GRC.com (that is better for security and firewalls and the like (ZONEALARM RULES)) and search Download.com for Ad-Aware.

    Hope it helps.

Best bet is simply to get a decent Usenet account (if your provider doesn't already provide one), a binary downloaded (I use NewsBin), and point it at the group you wish to comb for good files. Beats Kazaa and Morpheus all told.

What's the attitude for? I never attacked you, I simply offered my opinion. Your welcome very much.

I never said I used Kazaa, in fact I said I didn't cause its full of spyware. Morpheus can't be shut down because it has no servers it connects mainly to the Kazaa servers and some other ones, so it can't be shut down. Do you mean that Kazaa will be shut down?

Also I mainly use AudioGalaxy anyway and I never implied you did care what happened to my computer, but if you care what does happen to yours you'll not use WinMX or KaZaA cause they are full of spyware. Get it?

Spyware may not damage you system, but it lets big business know what your doing/looking at/listening to and I don't like that, do you? Of course your using AOL, so that tells me you really don't care anyway.

I recommend a nice, small, local ISP. They have better security, they are faster, and usually less expensive. I recommend ToadNet or QIS here in Maryland. After that use a firewall or two. I use BlackICE and ZoneAlarm. Also a nice anitVirus is good Norton (shudder) and MacAFee (sp?) are good ones. Doing all that will make your computer more secure that it needs to be for what the average user does on the internet.

However this thread isn't about security is it?

We now return your to your regularly scheduled lives.

Hrm; getting an FTP account wouldn't give you access to anything, just a place to put whatever you may find.

Usenet, to me, is the best option because, unlike the Peer-to-Peer connections (Kazaa, Morpheus), you are limited only by your own bandwidth and that of your Usenet provider. In my case, I get about 2.5MB/sec to my Usenet provider's server, so I find it easiest to just retrieve the list of all headers in whichever group (alt.binaries.mp3.heavy-metal for Dream Theater, for example), scan the headers, delete those I do not want to download, and go. I easily grab a couple hundred tunes every time I do this without much trouble.

Any chance you could reply with the text of what you're replying to? I'm not sure if you're replying to me or what. Assuming that you are replying to my questioning the utility of FTP, what I mean is this:

An FTP client lets you download straight to your computer, sure. But you are still limited in that you have to find an FTP server to download FROM that has what you are looking for and is not bandwidth-limited. Usenet brings an efficiency to this whole process that whips FTP's ass.

I saw an article here that may explain why people are not able to Access Morpheus:

Seems it may be a software upgrade problem

Step 1: Find out if whoever provides your Internet Service has an NNTP (commonly called "news") server. Step 2: Get the address of that server, and set it up in a news reader of some sort (your provider should be able to give you the address and help you set it up in Outlook Express or something similar). Step 3: Pick a group that will have files that interest you (alt.binaries.mp3.heavy-metal). Step 4: Download all of the headers from that group. Step 5: Pick those that contain files you actually want. Step 6: Download, decode, rock'n'roll.

Hm, cool idea. I'd love to hear them playing any of these albums:

Tool -- Lateralus Anglagard -- Hybris Deep Purple -- Machine Head Dio -- Holy Diver Genesis -- Selling England by the Pound Golden Earring -- Moontan Iron Maiden -- Number of the Beast (in addition to 7th Son) Jethro Tull -- Aqualung or Thick as a Brick Jimmie's Chicken Shack -- Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope Judas Priest -- Screaming for Vengeance Kansas -- Leftoverture (Magnum Opus would be really cool by DT) Led Zeppelin -- their choice Marillion -- Misplaced Childhood Pink Floyd -- Animals Rush -- anything Grace/Pressure or earlier Superior -- Behind The Who -- Who's Next Yes -- Fragile
