I am building up a collection of Concert DVD's, and I
was seriously pissed when I couldn't make a Video Tape
copy of a dvd. I don't have a dvd player on every tv,
and I don't want to move the damn dvd player around
all the time, so I wanted a tape. I bought the damn
thing, and it's perfectly legal for me to make a copy
for my own use.
We do have a choice: return the dvd or cd. As
consumers, we don't have to buy discs if they do this
to us. If they start getting returns, they may change
their policy.

Well, of course the main claim of Record Companies is to exist to make money; profit. Pure and simple. But the conflict of interest that arises in this debate is
obvious, which is why there are significant contingents of musicians, artists, and other creative individuals who are taking a stand, and not just via
demonstrations and acitivism, but through legal channels as well. One can argue the point, of course, that home recording devices didn't interfere with the
distribution and retail profit of CD's, and cassettes over the years, technology be damned.
Like i mentioned recently, I recently sashayed into a large corporate music store and discovered that the LIST PRICE of most contemporary CD's is now in the
$19.99 range, with the obligatory SALE CD's around $13-14. I was in management at a variety of Sam Goody stores (I know, I hate to admit to it, but yeah, I was
working for the corporate music man!) a few years back, and can recall when the list price was $15-16.
Materialistic profiteering by corporations, especially record companies is nothing new. The gaul and blatant anti-consumer rhetoric and litigations they will go
to protect themselves is not. It borders on pathologically insane, though in a capitalistic world based on market share, and stock prices, I guess our veritible
bed's are made. I don't see many politicians, who have been known to take a few kickbacks, and financial assistance here and there, doing much about it, unless
some great consumer advocates, and enough artist's can turn the tide.
Ironically, the extra technology that goes into producing a CD, which is miniscule compared to the advertising dollars, and kickbacks that come out of the
wholesale price, should be assisting certain parties in their litigation, one hopes. Alas, I can see this is an uphill battle. And sure, I think the MP3/Napster
debate and debacle of last year (seems like eons ago, eh?) certainly predicated more of these issue's coming to the forefront.
Personally, I don't by much in the way of retail CD's for a variety of reasons, but I will say this, any band or musician I support, will get my money for their
product, perferably NOT through the corporate system, if possible, but if so, then so be it. I would have to hope this entire scene will sprout some sort of
revolution from within by the artists who can AFFORD to counteract the high-price lawyers of Record Company X.
Let me re-iterate: How the hell are CD's retailing at $20? What the hell is going on here? I have to mortgage my car just to buy the new DT disc, it seems!
(Actually, I went through the various CDNOW Coupons, I wonder how much money CDNOW is losing on this venture?). Sorry! I jsut can't get over this. And the fact
that with record profits, the industry is practically screaming bankruptcy? Or atleast some form of corporate poverty. Next think I can envision, corporate
welfare funding or they'll 'take their business elsewhere'. Where? The moon?
Damn... and the consumers are supposed to hold the power, eh? Sorry for the rant, this whole discussion DID open a can of worms, man! lol...

Not quite. The record company are entitled to do whatever they want to
*prevent* you making a copy. But if you do manage to make a copy, they
aren't allowed to take action against you.

Movie prices are a lot less BEFORE 6pm... At 6pm the price of movies goes up to their full price. So the best time to see movies is on the weekends before 6pm, unless you have a job where you get days off during the weekdays.
