I helped out with their appearance at Progpower. They thanked me in the
liner notes (you, too, of course), but I didn't think to look for
anything, nor did I notice the liner-notes card, so when I posted my
original review of the CD, I was unaware my name was there. :)
We both heard the whole CD -- precisely once :) -- during Progpower, so
I kinda had an idea of the excellence that was coming down the pike, but
as I said.... I was expecting a great CD, and they topped my
expectations.
---And sure, any list of "Best Ofs" is early. The thread -was- tagged "so far." There will be new Opeth to look forward to, toward the end of the year. :)

i dig their latest one a lot, but i like all of their stuff a lot...
the best one to go to for a good mix of their stuff: "BEST OF"
the best album IMO... "DOGMAN"
many people's other fav album (it's a concept album)... "GRETCHEN GOES TO NEBRASKA"

This is kinda true, if you compare it to their other stuff, but I think the new stuff does have it's high-points. Less technical, more straightforward and trying to be too melodic. I still prefer Steelbath Suicide

This is the band that has lost their balls I think. Also, the fact that they wimped out of progpower was pretty sad too.

Is their latest release just a sleeper? > hey chris, don't know much about the new one, as i haven't heard anything about it besides your little blurb there. however, if it's anything like the one prior to this one, the "Mr. Bulbous" album, it's not a good representation of why most of the King's X fans ARE King's X fans!! check out older stuff, ala "Dogman" & "Faith, Hope, Love". their two best "older" albums IMHO. for their newer sound, "Ear Candy" wasn't bad, but not phenominal either. hope this gives you a few starting points.

I'm not surprised you didn't dig the new one. Some people really seem to like it, but it's easily my least favorite of theirs. The self-titled album or "Dogman" would make a good disc to start with.

It ain't a bad album. The problem, I think, with "Natural Born Chaos" is not so much the enhanced poppiness, but the inclusion of too many throwaway songs. There's a bunch of good ones on there (if you don't mind the more melodic direction they've taken).

I can definitely make up my own mind, but based mostly upon Rush's last several releases, I'm not "rushing" out to buy VT. I think it'll be a good present for my b-day, or I'll wait for the price to go down...or I'll wait for it to show up used.

If you didn't like the last few releases, then definitely check out Vapor Trails. It's different from the other albums (No keyboards, grittier sound, etc.). I liked it immediately, while others have been more lukewarm to it.
Don't wait too long to get it, because it is good stuff. :)
