Blind Guardian can best be described as "Viking metal". Lots of
war-hymns and battle anthems that come across a lot more believable and
authentic than anything Manowar ever farted out. The singer's got an
amazing and unique voice which sometimes is layered with full choirs.
The music isn't technical at all - just straight-up power/speed metal.
Lately they've been doing more concept-albums (Tolkien, for example)
but their style hasn't changed all that much. Iced Earth, Nevermore
and Manowar are also part of the power/speed metal genre. Stratovarius
is in there too, but isn't nearly as heavy.

Blind Guardian's great music to blast just before you go onto the field
before the big game, or during your exercise routine, or before you go
out on the town to hunt down chicks. Or in my case, when you're on the
last level of Morrowind and you need that extra motivation to kill the
    Dark Lord. ;)

    Hope that helps!

While on the subject of female singers, I'd like to plug one of
my favorite bands, Grey Eye Glances (www.greyeyeglances.com). They
are fronted by a *wonderful* female singer -- she has a beautiful voice
and a great sense of melody. The music isn't progressive, more along the
lines of Tori Amos or the Indigo Girls, but they have catchy melodies,
good lyrics and great vocals. The music uses a lot of piano and some nice
guitar work by Brett Kull (of Echolyn though the music has no relation
to Echolyn's music). If you want to try them, I'd suggest starting with
    "Eventide" or "Painted Pictures".
Another fantastic female singer is Rose Polenzani. She has a
somewhat dry vocal style with an amazing voice. The music uses a lot
of acoustic guitar and builds a great atmosphere. The lyrics are very
good with a poetic style. I'd recommend starting with her self-titled
CD which is superb. I think you can only find her stuff at her web site
(www.rosepolenzani.com). There are samples there (check out "Fell" or
"Whatever Remains"). I happened to see her live at the Rosebud in
Pittsburgh when she opened for another band and was hooked.
I also like Tale Cue, an Italian band fronted by a female
singer. This band's music is progressive, in the vein of old-style
    Genesis. Good stuff.

Hello! Alright, here are my descriptions of the sounds of the following bands:

Avantasia - This is a power metal supergroup, with quite a few singers (including probably my favorite singer of all time Michael Kiske) and members of Helloween (bass), Gamma Ray (guitar), Rhapsody (drums) and probably others I can't remember. The music can be described as power metal in the vein of Helloween and Gamma Ray. Their only cd so far is a must have for all fans of power metal.

Blind Guardian - Another power metal band, but with a sound that's completely unique. They're more aggressive than Helloween and Gamma Ray, but still very melodic. I think someone has described them as elf music, and I can see where they're coming from. The musicianship is top notch, with double lead guitars leading the way. The vocals are great, and they're less clean (raspier (?))than the average power metal band's. I have all of their discs from Imaginations from the Other Side on, and they are all must haves.

Rhapsody - These guys describe their music as Hollywood Metal. They're actually a power metal band that uses a lot of classical elements in their music. They use classical instrumentation and arrangements, as well as choirs. The lead singer is awesome, and the music is very melodic and just plain great. They have a slight resemblance to Angra. All of their discs so far make up one whole story about knights and dragons and all that crap, which some people like but others dislike.

And to the guy who said he just loves female fronted bands, I have a suggestion for you. Check out a band from Puerto Rico called Icaro Azul. Their cd is available through CDNow. Their music isn't progressive or even metal. They're in the genre usually referred to as Rock en Espaqol (Rock in Spanish). Their sound reminds me a bit of The Gathering, but probably more alternativy. The musicians are not the best out there, but they fit the style of the band very well. The best thing about the band is the lead singer. She has an amazing voice, very powerful and expressive. The vocals are all in Spanish, and the songs have very catchy melodies. Also, my girlfriend sings backup vocals on two songs :-) Check them out if you can.

OSI? Oh no! You mean there will be 7 instruments, each more abstract than
the last, to form a group that everyone loves to talk about, but never
    listen to?

Perhaps the layered model could be a new way for bands to write music!

the new satch album is different why? its like a blend of the extremist and the straighter stuff on the self-titled album. very catchy melodies, three listens will do to sing along. he uses 7string at times. I saw the show two nights ago, and wasn't too keen on Matt Bissonette, but apart from that it was cool, and the new songs were really cool live. Try it out, it's not as fancy as crystal planet. sab -- If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything! ________________________________________________________________ Keine verlorenen Lotto-Quittungen, keine vergessenen Gewinne mehr!
