How fucking gay is that. I hope you enjoy reading my

It's amusing to me that this guy thinks The Siamese
Monster is "fucking gay" when aparrently Bozzio's kit
is ok(I am a Bozzio fan also, so I'm not knocking it).
Just where do you think most of Portnoy's ideas have
    come from?

The fan (?) that wrote the letter to Modern Drummer regarding Portnoy, well, though I can kind of see his point (I always thought Portnoy was a very capable, if not very BUSY drummer, but to refer to him as an 'asshole' because of his zest for intense drumming techniques, abilities, and interests, is beyond ridiculous). I much prefer the refined styles of Zonder, Peart, et al... BUT there's room at the top for players of various techniques, Portnoy not being the least of it. I don't know why some people take it as a personal affront, that, sure
there are drummer's out there who like to go over the top from time to time, and Portnoy atleast has the rudiments and song writing ability to back it up... But that's my opinion. Atleast I didn't call him a 'fastidious creampuff' because I think he overplays. He's still amongst my favorite drummers.

Oh yeah, regarding the guy (Brian) who pointed out the guy who forgot to place the word 'could' in his paragraph about the guy who could unleash nuclear destruction on the entire second and third world if big business said it would get him higher approval ratings and more money for the coffers, don't forget they could both push the eject button from your car CD player and permanently install the Boy Band CD of their choice to wish you where residing in permanent nuclear winter! lol....

    > Anyone else have thoughts on that bullshit of a rant?

Hey, it's okay to critique, ya know!

Y'all are gonna think I'm nuts, but I really liked that anti-Portnoy rant.
Not so much for what it said, but because when I typically hear people rip
on DT, it's usually "They sound like fags harrrrhrreherrh" and other tripe.
At least this kid has a POINT with his rant.

Now, regarding the actual rant: indeed, I see some valid points,
particularly on overplaying. But then again, I think he's looking past the
point that at some point, everyone in that band is overplaying. That's how
they put everything together. They overdo it because they CAN, and since
that's what we're expecting anyway, we love it. But I will be the first one
in line to say that Portnoy's drumming on 6DoIT has turned insane. I'm as
much of a believer of minimalism as a tool as I am of grandiosity. But
sometimes I just think to myself, hey Portnoy, do you *have* to hit 145
drums every second? Would it be more effective with less?

But all of my inner debates aren't at odds with what is currently done,
they're more of an alternate that I wouldn't be displeased with. I'm
certainly not displeased with the material being written and played
currently, otherwise I wouldn't have remained a fan for the last 10 years :)

I'll agree with that, I feel more like this though. Do you have to have a
set which requires two asses? I mean come on... The playing doesn't get on
my nerves too much but I think the purple monster was just right.

Yeah, it's even scarier that liberals can only complain about Bush's speech patterns or how he "stole the election." He could go over capture Bin Laden himself, turn the economy around and make the blind see and they'd still be complaining.

I think the guy who wrote that is entitled to have his
opinion, but I do not agree with him. For some reason
he just hates Portnoy, and he's trying to back it up
with "evidence". Portnoy is a great musician and
seems to be a great contributer to the music DT makes.
Everyone that's worked with him has stated in
interviews that they love writing and playing with him
because of his musical knowledge and playing
abilities. And he might seem like he's a little cocky
sometimes, but I don't think he thinks of himself as
the drum god and that everyone should bow to him. I
think he's quite down to earth considering how big his
name and his band have gotten.

How right you are. At the end of the wed. show, some one handed him a sign
that read Portnoy is a Drum God(not a direct quote....sorry). He took the
sign and wiped his ass with it(laughing during the whole thing)

Bah. I could care less about the whole election "scandal" (or capturing
terrorists for that matter). I just think it's funny that the leader of
the free world stumbles over relatively easy words on a consistent
basis. The reasons I don't like the guy as president have nothing to do
with the ones mentioned...but this ain't the forum for political discussion.

    Let's talk DT.

About that rant, who cares what some guy thinks of Portnoy. If you like
his style, you like his style - no need to defend him. The guy has
hundreds of thousands of fans, one flame ain't going to make everybody
change their minds. If you have the attitude that all dissenters must be
quelched, you're going to be very busy: there's far worse opinions out
there. A lot of serious metalheads can't stand Dream Theater at all, let
alone the drumming. In short, enjoy the band, and don't worry about what
    other people think of 'em.
