I agree - they definitely didn't create the innovation of changing setlists
daily. Portnoy has said, however, that it was one of the things that
attracted him to Phish. He liked it and how it kept the music fresh,
etc... I'm just saying that Phish's variety definitely rubbed off on DT...

Yup! Seen them 3 times. They were great each time. It is funny how some
people react to their stage show. I have heard people whine how they don't
move, or "I couldn't see Maynard". Here's my reaction to the
whining......come on people isn't great flawless music enough for you.

I saw them once after they released Aenima back in 96 I think it was. Carey's drumset was elevated to the point where you couldn't see him anymore, and BOY his drumset was large... Maynard was in some sort of latex suit painted half blue and half white, and to one side was Justin (bassist) in all white and to his other side was Adam (guitarist) in all blue. They put on a nice show indeed... not to mention that the opening band sucked bigtime...

What I'm sure you mean to say is you don't like them, or that they don't suit your tastes... because saying they suck just shows that you refuse to tolerate music that doesn't appeal to you, which is untrue I'm sure... There are plenty of bands out there I'm tempted to say suck, but even quasi-musicians might like them, so I just resign to the fact that either everyone is good in someone's ears or everyone sucks. Or I just say "hey this is what I like, and its too bad you dont like it.", instead of "this is what i like and everyone else sucks". Being a fan of such an 'obscure' (I use the term loosely) band like DT and the likes, you should know that not everyone will cling to whatever you make them listen to. A lot of people will just dismiss DT or the likes and say that they suck, when we ALL know that they clearly dont. What does that mean? Everyone who says they suck is stupid? Not quite... just they have a poor choice of words. If they truly mean that a band that obviously has profound musical talent sucks, then sure I guess they are stupid =) But most of them tend to mean that they just dont like it. It's just too much for some people to wrap they unprogged simple brains around... m.S

Hey what up, At one point I thought Porcupine Tree was really, really extraordinary. This was back when I didn't do all my music listening in the car, so I could pay loving attention to Pink Floyd-type sounds (as one of our collegues already cited the affiliation). Nowadays I don't listen to them much (the road-rage thing--the two don't mix), but if it's your style, go for it. One thing to note, in my very humble and unqualified opinion: it's not a prog orgasm, so you might be setting yourself up for disappointment if that's what you're hungering after. -JK

That's their way of handling press really , a weird sense of humor . It's part of their 'think for yourself, question authority' attitude i guess. They don't give anything away about their music , they leave that to the listener . Anyway , all this talk about Phish has stirred up my curiosity . Do you people recommend "you enjoy myself" for a first contact with the band ? Could you tell me of a song to download ? I'd like to have a listen first before it gets to my shopping list , since opinions are so varied .

Do you know which album you were downloading stuff from? Because the albums Stupid Dream and In Absentia are absolutely without a doubt much heavier than any of their other stuff. It's also quite a bit varied in terms of style.
When I first heard them, I was listening to Stupid Dream, and the first description of them I came up with was that they were a mix of Pink Floyd, Kevin Moore, Coldplay, and Radiohead. Personally, I absolutely love them, and In Absentia is probably going to be my Best Of 2002, unless The Odyssey happens to blow me away, which it very well may do.

Symphony X will blow every CD away you've bought this year. I've had it in my car for the last 2 weeks solid. Every time I left the house I'm jamming.
With AudioGalaxy, it doesn't tell you which album you get the mp3s from, unfortunately. It was web-based and the key field is the song title itself... Hopefully they've gotten heavier since the material I heard :) But nothing else is better than Symphony X's new CD !!!
