"Goths" at an Opeth signing? This seems odd; maybe your 'goths' Down
Under aren't the same as 'goths' Up Here. (Goths up here are more
likely to listen to Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy or (shudder) Marilyn
Manson than Opeth...)

Mikael ALWAYS seems surprised when the crowd is screaming for them.
You'd think he'd be used to it by now. He has to come to grips with
the fact that, yes, his band HAS talent AND fans that recognize it. :)

I haven't noticed that similarity yet (I'll pay more attention next time, although I do have the excuse that I haven't had the chance to give it that many listens yet), but I did notice that the instrumental track reminds me A LOT of Hell's Kitchen. And there's another part on another song that reminds me a lot of a Lemur Voice song from their first album, but I can't remember either song's name (how helpful am I?).

And you should add the singer as well :-) The one that has impressed me the most is the keyboardist, followed by the guitarist. But they are all great.
On another note, I was listening today to Shadow Gallery's Tyranny and that album just rocks. It had been a while since I last listened to it...

The newest Symphony X CD builds on "V" and cranks it up over two notches !! (most bands crank it up A notch... well, our guys cranked it up TWO! lol)

But seriously, SymX's new album Odyssey kicks major arse. I also saw the guys live for the first time a month ago, warming up for Stratovarius. Needless to say, Symphony X was brilliant while Stratovarius bored me to tears.. I left after about six or seven Strato songs.
Too bad SymX only played for about 45 minutes. I hope they come back here soon.

Ummm where have you been? Not only has the CD been out for a while and it kicks ass (WAY heavier than any of their other albums, plus the accolade 2 just kills me... I'm dead several times because of it), but they have been on tour for some time now. granted, i'm not as familiar with SX as i would like to be; only heard a few misc songs here and there. however, i loved what i heard. now, Stratovarius: i've only heard one disc, as it's the only one i have by them. the disc is "Infinity", and i must say, if you can get past the repetitiveness of the songs (there's reasons why double-bass drumming gets knocked & pigeonholed - listen to this album), then it's not half bad.
if i were to see them live, i'd probably leave early too. after all, i can very rarely listen to the whole album all the way through in one sitting. as individual songs go, though, they can deffinetly rock. they've got talent, are proficient on their instruments, and can perform their specific genre & do it SOLIDLY. however, there's not much depth beyond that. once you've heard 3 or 4 of their songs (at least on Infinity), then you've heard the whole album.
a cool little side note: does Strato's singer make anyone else think back to Geoff Tate when he still had that glass-shattering high range (with power behind it, too :) )?? heard some earily similar vocal stylings in the Strato stuff. and, is Infinity a good representation of the rest of their stuff??? just curious.
