Hello! My endless curiosity made me buy the album Genius - A Rock Opera, and I must say that my curiosity was pretty kind to me :-) The album is very good musically, with great musicianship and great singing. It sounds very Empty Tremorish in many parts (that shouldn't come as a surprise when Liverani is ET's keyboardist), which is definitely not a bad thing. The singer who plays the main character (Genius) also reminds me a lot of ET's singer. Liverani is a great musician, who plays guitar, keyboards and bass very well. The only thing that I think completely sucks about this album is the lyrics. My God, how can Liverani write such bad lyrics when he writes such good music? I couldn't stop wondering how the vocalists agreed to sing such terrible lyrics. The story isn't that bad (it's not that good either), but it's made worse by the childlike lyrics. I would have preferred if it was in some other language that I couldn't understand so that I would just listen to th!
e singing without knowing what crap they were saying. So, if you get this album (which I actually recommend despite the lyrics), you should think twice before reading the lyrics, because that could posibly ruin a otherwise very good prog album.

I also recently got The Gathering's new album, Souvenirs, and I still need to listen to it more in order to see if I like it or not. The only thing I can say is that it's very different from most of what they've done throughout their career, and that it's very experimental. It reminds me of something Radiohead would do. It's pretty weird. The final veredict will probably have to wait for a while.

    Alexis
