Saw Frank Zappa tribute band Project/Object (now with real Zappa alumni Ike Willis, Napoleon Murphy Brock & Don Preston) this weekend. Very entertaining, though I can't remember ever seeing a band plug their merch more than they did! Opening for them was something highly unusual: kids. A lot of them. Playing Frank Zappa songs. I was expecting a DJ or something along those lines when I saw the 'Paul Green School of Rock Music Presents "Ultimate Zappa"' was also listed with P/O. In reality, this PG school is an informal music school in Philly whose philosophy is to teach through live experience and classic rock. They were surprisingly good too, particularly when considering the difficulty of the source material.

To me, Metallica was at its best in the 1980s- 'Ride The Lightning,' 'Master of Puppets', and '... And Justice For All.' The reason why I love these albums is because they were trying to go beyond what most other metal bands were doing. With all those different guitar parts going on and songs that lasted over several minutes, one can tell that they were looking to incorporate progressive elements into their sound.
Unfortunately, Metallica got tired of pushing the envelope after touring behind AJFA, and so they tried to do what Rush did over a decade earlier: put more energy into shorter, more concise (and repetitive) compositions. While they enjoyed major success with the Black Album and subsequent efforts, most of the material of the 1990s was not of the same quality as the classics that preceded them. Don't get me started on "I Disappear" and that song they did with Ja Rule. I have no idea how the new album, 'St. Anger,' will sound, but I hope Metallica realize how far they had strayed in the 1990s (I wonder if Mike Portnoy had talked to Lars about that... http://www.mikeportnoy.com/media/pics/celebs/mplars.jpg )

While I can see how you might be annoyed by Blink 182, you should take a listen to their drummer. He's not your typical 1-2-3-4 punk player; he draws from a lot of different influences, and his drum parts add texture to the music. I should also point out that Blink 182 gave props to Rush a few years ago on Much Music in Canada.

Oh, "I dissapear". The biggest insult to metal since Bon Jovi. I have a 12 year old "pop" cousin that likes that song. :) Anyway, I do not completely hate Metallica's latest stuff. There are some songs in Load that are worth more than one listen. Even one r two in Reload.
I just hope the new album is good, because they are probably coming to Argentina by year's end, and since DT never comes this far under the Ecuator I might as well spend my money on them.
Hey, maybe that guy that had dinner with JP awhile back could give him a call and tell him to tour South America once in a while ;)

Yeah, actually the drummer knows something. He packs a lot of energy in his parts. But still, one good drummer doesn't make a good band. The rest of the elements of Blink leave much to be desired... You should see the guitar guy play live. Its a wonder he can play anything at all, even if its a simple power chord.

I saw Nightwish on their latest 'Century Child' Tour. Amazing. Caught them in Berlin at the Columbia Halle, maybe room for 2000. It was my girlfriend's first hardrock concert -- was so great to see her bopping her head to the beat and mouthing the words to the songs. Another has been converted! :)

you lucky man. i took my girlfriend (now fiance) to her first hardrock concert. it was DT at Philly's Electric Factory, aug 4th, 2000 (the "Brotherly Deceit" boot show, for those that care). if you're familiar with the electric factory, things get packed in there pretty tight. well, she just happens to be extremely claustrophobic, and we were right smack in the middle of the floor, front & center. this DID NOT bode well for her, & she had to make several trips out to the fringes to sit down & breathe. her only other "big" concert experience had been when she was like 9 years old, & she saw Amy Grant in a seated arena. the Electric Factory was NOT what she was planning on. shame, really.

i dunno, but on a similar spin: i know Scott Rockenfeld did a solo work, and i heard his drum work was supposed to be VERY impressive, much more proggy & technical than QR. any idea what that was???

;o) Yeah, "clone" was a strong word there. Not completely accurate. Of course DT has other influences, but back in the day when PMU first came out, the comparison was always with QR. Upon first listening, all of the old QR fans would say they sounded just like QR. Of course on further listening, there were differences, and many old QR fans didn't get on the DT bandwagon. Too mellow and too many keyboards was the common complaint.

i had heard that scott did a jazz album. i don't know if it was any good or not, though. everytime i tried to hear any of it on cd now or another site, my computer was nocked off line by my sister. on a side not, i have found that if you know some one is online and you want to knock them offline, call them w/ your home phone and your cell phone at the same time. my sister used to do this to me when she had "emergency" phone calls to tell me her fav band was on mtv. thank god for paxil. jacko

I was there too, and you're right, the floor of the Electric Factory can get ugly (especially in the middle of August - air conditioning? fans? ha!). Once you're over 21, the loft makes the place a lot more palatable. Even more palatable, though, is just about every other concert venue in Philly - the Electric Factory blows. Fortunately, most of the good shows are coming to the Troc these days.
Speaking of which...05/11 @ the Trocadero (supposedly) - the upcoming Metal Gods tour: Halford, Testament, Immortal, Primal Fear, Amon Amarth, Carnal Forge & Pain Museum. Best package deal since DT/QR/FW.

He did an album with guitarist Paul Speer called "Hell's Canyon". It's pretty good, all instrumental, kind of a soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist.

I can see the QR comparisosn - but a lot of old Rush fans said they sounded just like Rush. :) Which of course they didn't either. Interesting about the too mellow complaint - aside from very early Queensryche, I think Dream Theater is and was every bit as heavy. I'm really getting excited for this tour..it is going to be a lot of fun. :)
