I was at the Las Vegas show, it was awesome. I had seen discussion here
that Mark Zonder was not touring with Fates. When they were in Vegas,
the drummer was the same guy I'd seen with them a couple of years ago
when I saw them in St. Paul. I had always assumed he was Zonder. If
that's not Zonder, who is he?

Well, if this last tour is any evidence, then improvement *will* happen - he
was even in better form than I've ever seen him at the two shows I attended
on this tour (NY and Seattle).
Part of this is no doubt due to the sets being shorter, but part of this is
certainly due to James taking better care of himself - he's obviously lost
weight and in speaking to him after the NY show, I found he's studying
singing again, tho not with Rosemary Burns (or whoever the lady he studied
with for 4 years).

I'm glad he won't be able to sing I&W material like he used to - back in
1993 he didn't have control over his voice in the live setting like he does
today - compare boots from this tour and the tour 10 years ago and you'll
see what I'm saying!
That said, I know what you're saying, but I must say tho that James *is*
hitting notes I've *never* heard him hit live - specifically on UaGM, as he
normally would cheat on some of those high notes.

Although I do drive like a maniac (ask anyone, especially my mother), I
don't think I can take credit for that one. I've never seen DT in Boston.
The only time I've seen them in the northeast is NYC, and I didn't have a
car on that trip. Although JonP and NickG took me on a wild ride in Boston
in Oct. '98... but that was another trip entirely. ;)

Remember, that James had huge issues with his vocal chords from extreme
vomiting (something to do with eating bad food), he almost had to stop
singing because of that, that happened several years ago (many to
remember), so yes he has improved with time, recovering his voice and
improving as time goes on and on.Besides, can you imagine DT without
James??? I can't for sure!

First of all, thank you to those of you who have read and replied to my
post about James on the FII tour.
I have some questions relating to what Damon wrote:

While I can see Damon's point, especially since it reminds me that other
male rock vocalists do not/ can not sing as high as they used to (Geddy
Lee, Geoff Tate), I was wondering:
1. Were those vocals on 'Images and Words' higher than they needed to be?
Could he have sung those songs an octave lower? Or should the songs have
been written in a different key?
2. Do you think that James was practicing good vocal technique when he
originally sang those songs? I know James is a trained vocalist, but I am
wondering if he did indeed sing in a way that did not damage his vocal
cords. Also, do you think in the 10+ years since I&W, do you think
his approach to vocals changed at all (and, if so, for the best?)
These questions may seem blasphemous who hold I&W in such high esteem, but
they are important in figuring out why James is singing differently now,
especially if it's to address any flaws in the original approach to the
songs.

Just along the lines of James' voice deteriorating over the years... do they
let you smoke in clubs in the US? I would imagine over a decade of singing
in smoke filled clubs might do some damage to your voice...

I have a bootleg from the FII tour (the one from Den Bosch, which was recorded and sold here on the jam by some guy whose name I forgot) and James was excellent that night. I saw DT in NYC on the first Roseland show, and James was spot on again. He will always have good nights and bad nights on each tour, although the frequency of the bad nights can indeed be diminished, I think. Actually, why does James' voice crack? Is it something physiological about his throat or is it something about technique that he should be able to control? I'm sure it's not the lines he's singing, because I've heard his voice crack on high notes, low notes, you name it.
