If I'm not mistaken, I think he was taking a piss.
He may have even mentioned that when he returned
    to the stage.

In the past, it was primarily JP, Mike and Kevin (when he was with the band)
that wrote the vocal melodies, with the occasional suggestion from James.
However, I recall reading/hearing that for the new album, where James was
present for the entire writing process, James played a much larger role in
writing the vocal melodies, along with JP and Mike.

I think in both cases, James just wasn't paying attention to where the guys
were at in a song, and neglected to come out on cue - nothing more than
    that.

Andrew got some of the basics right on this one, but since I was there, I'll
    elaborate a bit:

The Palace was oversold - too many people were on the floor level and some
how the Fire Marshal was made aware of the situation, and using their
authority, wanted the show stopped and the venue shut down for the evening.
The authorities showed up backstage during One Last Time, and during the
instrumental break between it and TSCO, they signaled James off to the side
of the stage. Once they did so, they threatened him with arrest if he
returned to the stage, as well as possible deportation (as he's Canadian,
not American). Obviously, he didn't want to get into trouble, so he didn't
    return to the stage.

Mike started to sing and was quickly made aware of what was going on (which
he then commented to the fans). In tr00 rock'n'roll spirit, Mike said they
were gonna continue - that they would literally have to pull them off stage.
So they continued with playing TSCO (very fitting) and Mike stumbled thru
the lyrics for the first half of the song, and then encouraged the audience
to sing the rest of it, which we all did. As we sang, the PA volume slowly
faded until all we were left hearing were the amps from the stage. Then,
just before the song ended, they literally pulled the plug on the amps and
thus ended the show. (This is all documented on the "The Spirit Really
Carries On" bootleg, as well as on one track from the 2000 Fan Club CD)

Apparently, after the show, the other 4 guys were threatened with arrest
since they refused to end the show when they were supposed to. Some how,
things were worked out and this didn't happen. The following day at NAMM, I
spoke with Mike on whether that show would happen or not, and Mike said it
would, only if the venue agreed to let them play much longer than they
originally were scheduled to - otherwise, they were gonna cancel. Well, DT
got their longer show, but immediately afterward, Mike vowed *never* to play
the Palace again (and they haven't). After that gig, the venue blamed the
promoter, and the promoter blamed the venue.

Either way, the second show was *also* way oversold, and unlike the first
night, people were allowed to sit on the stairs in the balcony (which is
also a fire hazard) so that the floor in front of the stage wouldn't be
    overcrowded.

Anyone spot the backing vocal in the first verse? The almost spoken,
gothic voice? Or perhaps an effect on James's voice? Either way, it's
    extremely cool.

Mike, I think that's a really interesting question. And if Eric is right, that James writes most of the vocal melodies, then I'm pretty disappointed with James' efforts lately. However, I think that part of the problem is that the lyrics may not lend themselves well to vocal melodies. I found many of the lyrics on SFAM to be stiff and that's how they came out in the vocals too -- more of a spoken story than a song. Writing lyrics which create good rhythm and rhyme is difficult and DT hasn't been spending enough time and effort on it, imho. I like some of the vocals from ToT, but very little of it stands out.

I was wondering the answer to this also because of the Music by: Dream Theater that we're used to, whereas TOT has Music by: JP, JM, JR and MP... I figured writing vocal melodies must be part of writing the music... so I thought maybe in TOT they were given to him... ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve Chew To: Multiple recipients of list Sent: Monday, December 01, 2003 3:41 PM Subject: Re: Vocal melodies

Apparently Myung writes the vocal melodies, and basically sings them to James so that he can get them right.
