Do tell, which music PhDs have you perused? Perhaps any that didn't bore
you? Or did you deem their "shit" worthwhile from a mile away and decide to
skip the "picking apart" part? From what I can tell, you don't even have
the work ethic to read a simple paragraph, much less study "crit theory" on
any level that would result in verifiable understanding that's applicable to
anything worthwhile.
So Brian, please, let's dispense with needless credibility building and talk
about something worthwhile. How's life been?Have you changed your mind
about buying TOT yet, or are you still quietly cringing in a corner
somewhere?

Okay, I'm thinking of getting "Liquid Drum Theater" on DVD for DH as a
Christmas present, but first I wanted to get some input from the drummers
out there who have seen it. After a long absence, DH has finally decided it
is time again to get a kit. He has been in bands in the past, but played
mostly rock/hard rock. What he would love to start playing now is prog and,
of course, Mike Portnoy is an idol (if not *the* idol) of his. Is "Liquid
Drum Theater" worth the money?

LDT is most definitely worth the money. I'm not even a drummer and I feel
that way. Mike talks a great deal about theory and breaks down everything
in a way that is very easy to understand. All in all, I'd say it's a
great instructional video, and in addition you get to hear some great
alternative mixes of music.

Has anyone been able to get 5.1 audio from the new
Transatlantic DVD? I have tried going to the "audio
options" page on the DVD, but that seems to be a
dead-end. Can't set anything (5.1 option is there),
can't get back to the main menu, seems like a dead
page. Is this another known bug with the DVD?

it is well worth the money. i would recommend the DVD, since it contains
everything the VHS has plus extras. i've had it since it came out, & i've
since worn my VHS copy out, which made it necessary to get the DVD. from
one drummer to another, it's one of the best drumming instructional videos
out there. plus, i know people who dig watching it who don't play a lick
on the kit.
some other good videos that i would rank right up there with MP's would be
Steve Smith "Drumset Technique / History of the US Beat", & John Blackwell
"Technique, Grooving, & Showmanship". Both are incredible, & masters of
their instruments.
For those that aren't drummers, but love great live performances, get the
2 DVD Modern Drummer 2003 set. It features Steve Smith's "Vital
Information" (great fusion), Nick D'Virgilio doing some solo & Spock's
stuff, & Mike Portnoy performing with both Yellow Matter Custard & Dream
Theater!!! Incredible stuff, & not to be missed.

awesome video, yes. but, for someone trying to get back into playing,
it's not nearly as instructional as the Portnoy, Smith, or Blackwell vids.
very inspirational, watching the collaboration process between Beauford &
Wooten. both are certainly masters of their instruments/genres.

1. I recently downloaded James singing the US national anthem from a link
posted at the James LaBrie message board, and I think I've listened to it
about 20 times in a row, maybe more!!!!! I have it on repeat and has been
playing for a while now. It's fuckin great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've always
wished to be able to hear him perform the national anthem, and my wish has
become a reality. He sings it effortlessly and even does some amazing
showing off at the "land of the freeeeee" part. I love it!!!!!!! That song
shows how amazing his range is.
2. I completely agree with the person who said the Transatlantic DVD and cd
rule. Great performance by everybody, with great energy. Neal's voice
cracks a few times (see, it happens to other people too, not just to James),
but it really doesn't matter. Everybody's having a lot of fun and everybody
shines. Pete Trewavas is a very good bassist, by the way.
3. Has anybody here ordered the Frameshift cd? I was going to order it
from the progrock records site (or whatever its name is), but I would have
had to pay over $15 for S&H because it seems like they only ship via UPS to
Puerto Rico. Is this cd going to be available on any other online store?
4. Just read that James is going to be the MAIN character in Ayreon's new
album!!!!!! I had read he was going to be singing in it, but not that he
would have such a prominent role. I can't wait for that cd to be
released!!!!!!
5. Damn I love Dennis Chambers. I recently got the cd Extraction with him,
Greg Howe and Victor Wooten, and it kicks ass!!! Also got CAB4, where he
also kicks ass, along with Tony Macalpine, Bunny Brunel and others. Why
can't Portnoy be this loose and unpredictable, at least when it fits the
songs? Hey Mike, rhythm can sometimes be implied, you know? I also got
Dave Weckl's new double live album, with Tom Kennedy (played with Planet X)
on bass. Amazing drummer as well, maybe even more technically complex than
Chambers. Great cd as well.

I won't be able to make this one :(. I am booked with patients until 5:00,
and since it is a 5:00 show it just won't work out. We also have parent
teacher conferences and it is my hubby's b-day. Please let us know how the
show was, I have never been to the ascot room, so I am interested in what it
is like.
