Hahaha, the subject caught my eye, since I wouldn't have remembered the
reference if I hadn't seen the ads for the movie "Mr. Holland's Opus" on
the WAM! channel this week. :) (I confess that I have a
guilty-pleasure addiction to The Tribe, a sci-fi based,
late-teen-oriented show from New Zealand that airs on WAM!. "The first
step is to acknowledge the addiction.....")

    > Alright, Ive been on the jam since 98 or so (in perpetual lurk)

Not quite perpetual, since I recognize your email address....

    > heard about Opeth copious amounts of times but never checked them out,
    > although they sounded cool. Last night this kid I never talk to calls me to

    It's a sign! It's a portent! It's also...a fairly inexact
comparison! If one's musical diet consists of just smooth vocals, Opeth
might not be welcome in your pantry, as Mikael A.'s extreme-metal vox
could be too much of a shock.

    > So now Im even more curious and will be going to the record store as soon as

I'd have suggested listening to some MP3's first, unless you're familiar
with extreme-metal vox. Quite a few people are now getting into that
genre through Opeth -- I did, a few years back -- but I'm not sure if I
would have embraced it if I'd gone into it "cold." :)

    > scene and Phish and whatnot, did anyone who said theyd try out a few songs
    > ever post anything about it?

Many of my friends diss the jam-band scene, but having heard some of the
bands involved, I won't. There's certainly merit to the scene, although
it's not my usual thing. :) I'm a fan of Ozric Tentacles, who are not
a jam-band per se, but draw a lot of fans from that scene because
    they're taper-friendly.

The only blemish on jam-bands, in my own limited experience, was a band
with a really pissy attitude: the Disco Biscuits, for whom the Ozrics
opened once. They sounded pretty good, actually, but they definitely
didn't have a laid-back approach to staging or production! :(

Not a clue, but I know that the same episode has been on at least twice in the last couple weeks. If you're that interested in it, you could probably contact PBS and find out.

Nothing wrong with watching partially-clothed teenagers with weird makeup and strange hairdos walking around...

oh wait, what am I saying?? :)) I've browsed a few episodes and one of the kids looks just like a younger Heath Ledger.
