Damnation will be mostly acoustic, slower stuff with no growling. I for one love death metal vocals....at first I didnt like them but after a while you begin to hear the emotion in them. Take In Flames for example....much emotion in the vocals (example: the song reroute to remain)

I just bought Death's Sound of Pers...all I can say is wow...and to think Death played their last show on that tour here in New Orleans, and I couldve been there.

Funny how damnation sounds a hell of a lot angrier than a title like
deliverance, yet its the opposite =)
I'm sure I'm not the only one that noticed this.

People who dismiss these type of vox as 'cookie monster' are for the
majority short sighted and somewhat ignorant of this great genre.

There are loads of great bands using growling vocals, many of them
more progressive and adventuous than many of the bands discussed here.

The Damnantion stuff has also been described as prog rock in an
interview I read in UK magazine, Terrorizer.

Terrorizer is my second favourite music magazine after Classic Rock. They do lots of cool features on bands like Opeth, Lacuna Coil, etc. This magazine very much towards the "heavy" end of the musical spectrum, and is aimed at a slightly younger market, so it complements Classic Rock perfectly.

SUre its full of grotesque artwork advertising the latest thing from hades, but in between you will find that it is by far the best written Metal mag out there (in English anyway). And they don't just cover 'extreeme' stuff - there's a good deal of Power and even prog stuff in there too. That being said I don't buy it every month.

    > haven't heard of sex to 9, and don't enjoy a lot of Total > Rock's output, finding it veers much too much towards > poodle perm / mullet / cheese rock for a lot of the time. The cheese metal overload is only between midnight and 3AM, during the week. The rest of the time they mix things up. There are lots of specialist shows, so you have to tune in to the DJ to see whether or not its worth listening. Friday Nights (6PM - 3AM) 3 hours of Melodic death, then 3hrs of Power Metal with Charlie Andrews and another 3 with Zed - and the 9hrs of classic/prog rock between 3PM and Midnight on a Saturday are best

anyway the blabbermouth lowdown on the Opeth UK tour

================== Acclaimed Swedish metallers OPETH will embark on a U.K. tour in March.

This trek will be the first of two U.K. tours planned for 2003, and is very specifically geared towards the heavier material featured on the group's recent "Deliverance" CD. The second, yet-to-be-scheduled tour is planned to show the "Damnation" side of OPETH pure bluesy, classic acoustic, beautiful mellowness. Expect venues to be unusual.

Dates for the "Deliverance" U.K. tour are as follows:

    Mar. 10 - Portsmouth, UK @ Wedgwood Rooms Mar. 11 - Manchester, UK @ Hop & Grape Mar. 12 - London, UK @ Mean Fiddler Mar. 13 - Exeter, UK @ University Mar. 14 - Glasgow, Garage Mar. 15 - Nottingham, Rock City Mar. 16 - Bradford Rio Mar. 17 - Birmingham Academy Mar. 19 - Dublin, Whelan's

The OPETH alter-ego album, "Damnation", is due for release in March/April 2003. ===========================

I too traded-tapes-with and got-into-Opeth-because-of Mr. Brito. Interesting how these things work. Akerfeldt probably owes him some sort of commission.

    >When they started >giving ridiculous amounts of space to the likes of Korn and Coal Chamber >(where are they now Kerrang?)

Unfortunately, both bands are still alive and kicking. At least, such is the case here in the US. Nurock's still got a bit of time yet before it goes belly up.

    >People who dismiss these type of vox as 'cookie monster' are for the >majority short sighted and somewhat ignorant of this great genre. >There are loads of great bands using growling vocals, many of them >more progressive and adventuous than many of the bands discussed here.

Well said. There's such a range in growled vocals too: lumping all growlers together is akin to saying KJLB and Axl Rose have the same voice. Or Rob Halford and Ralf Scheepers...alright, forget that last one... In any case, extreme metal vocals are no joke: they are just as legitimate as clean vox. They are, of course, also an acquired taste.

I just remembered something I hadn't mentioned in my other posts. First, on Spock's Beard's new DVD, specifically on the making of V, there is some bonus live footage which includes a performance of June somewhere in Chicago with a special guest on drums. Do you know who that special guest is??? Well, it happens to be our very own Mr. Mike Portnoy, who plays the song with the Kiss mask on and takes it off at the end. I can't believe nobody had mentioned that before. Also, about SB, Neil is an even more amazing musician than I thought. I hadn't finished watching the whole thing until the other day, and I noticed that the guy even plays drums!!! And quite well if I must add. So he can sing, play keyboards, guitar and drums. This guy is almost a one man band.

I forgot to mention another great release for 2002, Superior's Ultima Ratio. Sorry for having forgotten Bernd!!!

Someone mentioned that Opeth's new albums Deliverance and Damnation are odd, considering that Deliverance is the heavy album and the more violent-sounding Damnation is actually the mellow one. Seems like a contradiction, but I think I figured it out.

Imagine you're destined to be damned. What's your first reaction? Run! Fight! Flee! Go kicking and screaming!!! Okay, which comes first? Deliverance or Damnation? Well it seems to me that you'd be Delivered to your Damnation. So that also explains why Deliverance came first.

The character, upon finding that he is to be damned, fights it and denys it. (Angry album: Deliverance) Finally, he knows he can't run from his fate and accepts his cursed sentence. (Somber album: Damnation)

Now, granted, I haven't taken any of the lyrics into consideration, but it's fun to think about, isn't it? ;)

Classic Rock is okay, but they waste far too much space on rehashed articles and defunked bands. Power Play is a great magazine, but not enough colour. They tend to only review bands on labels that advertise with them.
