Hmmmm. Here's what I know. Derek's organ sound was accomplished using at
first an old Korg CX3, not the new one, and then a Roland VK7 on stage with
outboard leslies for the rotary speaker sound. The only way you are going
to approximate that is to find the best organ sound you have and see if
your keyboard has a good rotary speaker effect with distortion. Or, just
buy a Korg CX3, the new ones. Derek apparently has sounds programmed in
that thing that approximate his sound. Also, a VK7 will probably sound
about as good. As for Jordan's sounds on 6doit, he used a Korg Karma and a
Kurzweil K2600, if memory serves. I haven't quite ghotten to the level of
being able to duplicate anything of Jordan's especially his sounds. I doubt
there are samples anywhere on the net of either of these sounds, and I
haven't seen any patch programming tips either. I have only really been
able to get close to Kevin More's lead sound on I&W, which is pretty basic
for the most part. I hope this helps somewhat.

I would attempt (key word is attempt) to email Sherinian or Rudess and ask them about it, or look at their Gear section. With a decent Korg you could probably reproduce a similar to Sherinian's effect, and likewise with a good Kurzweil for Rudess' sound.

On the notion of being for sale, I have Petrucci's Rock Discipline and Portnoy's Liquid Drum Theater on VHS, and I would like to possibly upgrade to their respective DVD's. Are they worth it (i.e. what extra features...)? Likewise, I'm interested in checking out the 'Beard DVD... is that any good? Anyone got a copy they'd want to sell or trade? Email me offlist for offers...

Well, I haven't posted here in a while because it just seems like there isn't all that much to post about. Other people comment on it, too, but it's usually in the context of some sort of update or whatever.

Yesterday's jam had like 8 messages in it, and that was awesome. I did notise one of the messages asked people to message privately, and I'm like "NOOO!" We need the discussions here, man.

..and UACM used to link to this mailing list. I looked at dreamtheater.net and could not find a mention of the jam. Does anybody know if that can be changed?

It kinda sucks when I'm interested in talking about something, but always ask myself if it's even worthwhile to post to the jam. You guys have some different perspectives on things then the SX guys do. We need to get this list known about again.

Hands up who likes Opeth? Anyone here who doesn't should :P If you don't like the vocals, give them a shot and give it a few listens. Took me years to get over the vocals, but they're great!

I went through a phase in my life from about 1985 - 1987 where I liked cookie monster vocals, but that ended long ago. The only Opeth CD I like, personally, is the one with Clean vocals..

Well, the Sherinian sound used on ACoS, for example, is quite easy to create; I did it on my Kurzweil in about five minutes. It's simply a "rock" style organ in B3 mode, with the leak in the oscillators set pretty high and the percussion channel ("key click") set pretty loud. It gives it that really crunchy sound. If I can think of it later on, I'll post the patch to my website. You may need to have the contemporary ROM block installed on your Kurz, though.

As for others, I'm not sure of any decent websites out there with DT keyboard sounds, although there are several fan sites that have some sort of okay sounds. If you really want to look for stuff, go to Jordan's Message Board and look in the "Patch Exchange" forum, although most of the patches there are for Kurz or other instruments like it. I don't know of any websites that have such sounds in SoundFont format or other software sampler formats, though.

I knew lastnights show in CT was gonna kick ass since 2 of my 3 favorite bands were gonna be there (ryche and DT). I've been going to see DT shows since '93, but lately I've been listening to mostly Symphony X, as their latest release kicks major ass. And I don't like 6DoIT that much - I mean it has its highlights but I consider it to be a pretty poor release and I'd rather listen to any other DT that came out before it - except FII. So I thought this show was gonna be a bunch of stuff off the new CD plus an 'Awake Medley' er something. I was wrong...

Queensryche was awesome mostly because they played some old stuff I've never heard them play before like "NM 156" and "Screaming in Digital". They also played 3 songs off promised land, 3 songs off Mindcrime, and 3 songs off Empire. And they played absolutely nothing off Hear in the Now Frontier or Q2K. Unfortunately, Chris DeGarmo still is not in Queensryche and this other guy they got doesn't do any of DeGarmo's solos. He writes his own. Mike Wilton plays his regular solos and changes them around a little, but HEY MAN - HAVE SOME REPSECT! There should be a law against replacement guitarists who don't play the original dude's solos. I mean Al Pitrelli got it right when he did that last Megadeth tour and he had to play Marty Freidman and Chris Poland solos. And as much as I love Queensryche, none of their guitarists can play up to par with a guys like Marty Freidman - so it's not that hard to learn the other solos so we don't have one of these situations - ...you're going crazy cuz the ryche is playing some old classic song and you get like 2/3rds of the way through and some guy they probably found in some hick bar in Nebraska plays his own solo. If you're gonna write your own solo, do it for a song that's a NEW song. But my cries will go forever unanswered as we all know how crappy it was when Janick Gers originally replaced Adrian Smith in Iron Maiden...but I won't bring up bad memories like that.

Dream Theater surprised me as well as they played absolutely nothing off 6DoIT - that was nice. Highlights of the show had to be "Only a Matter of Time," "Another Day," "Scarred," and "Learning to Live". They did 1 song off WDaDU, 3 songs off I&W, 1 1/3rd songs off Awake, 2 songs off FII, and 2 songs off SFaM. The last time I went to the Oakdale, Myung was turned really high up and this ruined the last time I saw them along with them playing a bunch of stuff off 6DoIT. This time, however, Myung was down and Rudess was high up, but Rudess high up really helped them them and the mix was good enough that you could still hear Petrucci. I'm not sure if this is a function of DT or the venue. LaBrie was really singing well...he hit almost every note...almost flawless - reminds me of old LaBrie stuff from his Winter Rose and early DT days. Hey - Portnoy is growing his hair long again - a decision probably made after someone impersonated him in NYC.

So then we have the encore. This is definite spoiler material so if you wanna be surprised at your show then don't read on.

All of a sudden it became apparent that DT and Queensryche were coming on together. The mere thought of this is just a metal juggernaut. They played "Peruvian Skies" together and didn't do a very good job cuz it sounded like one of the guitarists from Queensryche was playing the wrong notes - in the basic chrod change - it was probably DeGArmo's replacement. But hey - it's the thought that counts and Queensryche probably can't play along to something like Metropolis so they had to do an easy song and it was nice hearing Geoff Tate singing on a DT song.

Next, they did a Queensryche song. I think this may have been the highlight of the entire concert, for me at least, or anyone else who loves both of these bands. They played "Take Hold of the Flame" which for any of you that aren't into the ryche, is a very cool, very old song. I thought both bands sounded great and Geoff Tate seemed like he was really impressed and having a good time - even though LaBrie clearly out-staged him on this song. I thought Geoff was a really good sport about it! And then Petrucci and Wilton harmonized the entire guiar solo together. Wilton was probably saying to himself, "Why can't this guy be in OUR band?". Sorry Mike.

Then they did a song by The Who. I don't know which song it was as I don't listen to The Who but I did recognize it as being one of their songs. The balding 40+ fans seemed excited but I would have rather heard a Pink Floyd song or something by The Doors. I don't really have much else to say about this song except for the fact that both bands were really having a good time.

So what else could we have asked for? Maybe a TV mini-series that's just the conversations these 2 bands have with each other off-stage? I tell you this...I'm listening to Awake right now for the first time in a while and I'm going to take a couple weeks off from Symphony X.

    THE END
