Thank god it seems that we are not currently in this period. Seems
like starting with the Met II tour, he has just gotten better and
better. I have seen them 5 times since then and he sounds better with
each show. This past summer at the PNc Bank arts center show, I think
he was the best I had ever seen him. Seems like his voice took a dive
during the Derek Era. They all seemed kind of disinterested in the
band at that time. Don't get me wrong. I liked Derek's sound, I just
feel that his personality did not mesh well with them. Watching them
now, is like watching little kids again. They seem so amazed at the
amount of fun that they are having. I have always thought, flame away
if you desire, that ACOS, FII, and OIALT are probably 3 of the
sloppiest offerings that they have. A band of their capabilities
typically would not let something like OIALT hit the streets with the
way James sounded on there. Compare that with LSNY, it is really night
and day. LSNY sounds like a rebirth. To me it sounds as if they were
going thru the motions at one point. Seems like with the addition of
Jordan Rudess there was a new fire lit. I liked Dereks abilities, but
his personality may have been the cancer that was hurting them. I know
there were numerous other variables in this, but he was a big one I am
sure, otherwise he would still be standing on stage with them.
Rounding out my point, I would have to say that most of the live
performances that I have from the Derek years have a dis-interested
quality from mostly the whole band.
