    Was nice meeting you!

Saw many, many DT shirts! YEA!

All I have to say is that, in all of the shows that I've been at Earthlink Live
    - that was the worst sounding. They had the sound way to high. Especially for
    Symphony X.

Other than that - it was nice to see some different bands.

I expected Circle II Circle to be a bit more heavier. I really like Vanden Plas.

Hope everyone enjoyed Atlanta! You guys had a perfect weather weekend.

Hey! I saw you there because of that shirt!

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids......

I've written up a (long and detailed) review of ProgPower USA 2003, for
those of you who are curious. It's up at my weblog, at
    http://www.livejournal.com/users/dslartoo/106099.html .

Greetz to the ytsejammers and ex-ytsejammers I saw there, including
Coldfire, Kez, WhoFooldU, Jax, Christina, Jaime, Alicia, Sarah and Jeremy,
Spine, Irene and Pat, Paul, and anybody else I, well, forgot.

    cheers,
    Phil

Let's try this again... some of you may have already seen it..my apologies if so.

So, my PP writeup this year... be warned, its long. I did take pictures, but the roll isnt completed, so they wont be developed for some time. I didnt take any live band shots this year, considering my past failures in this respect, and especially since I then cant pay as much attention to the actual show; however plenty of other people did, so Im not worried about that!

Two days before ProgPower I came down with the most awful congestion, a horrid combination of cold/flu-like symptoms you can imagine. However, as I had already paid for my Gold Badge, flight, and booked my hotel, I was not about to miss it unless I was hospitalized... I flew to Atlanta with my own personal pharmacy dept, especially decongestants, on which I was doped up all weekend. As fate would have it, it actually helped and I didnt have to be rushed to the hospital, although I was accused of being the bringer of this years plague to ProgPower.

I arrived on Friday afternoon, and didnt run into anyone in the area of the venue, so I decided to take a nap before the event, as I was exhausted & sick anyway. When I showed up shortly before the start of the first set I ran into a bunch of buddies from past years who later connived me into a drink at the bar, which however was NOT TEQUILA. In fact, a big hello to everyone I saw again & met this past weekend, especially fellow ytsejammer Rick Audet, it was great meeting you! I wont list everyone though as Im sure I would leave someones name out. The only Strange Encounter I had was with one drunk underage dude on Saturday night, though perhaps a drunk underage guy at a metal show isnt so strange.

    In order of appearance: Friday:

I went in to listen to Redemption, but honestly, now that Im thinking back on it, I dont remember them at all. I think I left after a song or 2, and hit the vendors, since in the past theyve tended to run out of things by Saturday night, and picked up a scad of CDs... Nightwishs Century Child, Nevermores Enemies of Reality, Circle II Circle, Evergrey- Recreation Day, and Im sure Im forgetting a couple. Also I got a long-sleeved Symphony X shirt, the one with Odysseus on the back... I thought that was pretty cool. :) Thanks to Sarah H. & Glenn (err, not H!) for aiding me in my quest to find a shirt sized medium!! After spending too much money, I went in to check out

Mercenary, which a number of people had described to me - negatively - as having growling vocals. I generally dont go for them, but I really enjoy a number of bands who use clean/growling vox (In Flames, for instance) so I thought Id give it a shot. They were alright, and they used some guitar harmonies a la In Flames, but not as successfully, I thought.

Next was Vanden Plas, which was one of the highlights for me in anticipation, as Id never seen these guys live. They did not disappoint. They put on one intense, rocking set, my only complaint is, I would have liked to have heard more songs, but I guess Ill have to see them headline in Europe sometime. The sound was dead-on live, and it was all-around great... I cant believe my cousins band had their contact information to possibly do a few gigs with them and DIDNT ORGANIZE IT. What the hell were they thinking???!!

Then Nightwish came on stage, and I decided my legs needed a break, especially considering the great mass of people in front of the stage (!) so I took a seat for their set. I was looking forward to them as well and they didnt let me down... they looked like they had a great time on stage, and Tarja put in an amazing vocal performance. It was even more spectacular for the fact that, as I found out later, she was actually totally sick with the flu and in her room vomiting before they took the stage. You would never have guessed anything was amiss, when you saw her stage presence. Excellent set, I loved it. I liked the vodka break too :)

Then, of course, Symphony X took the stage. :) I decided I had to stand for this one, and meandered to the floor, where I naturally ran into ALL sorts of people that I knew, hehe. After a while someone pointed out Rick P. to me, who was of course all the way in the front, stage center, where he always is. I waved, then he waved, then I decided to see if I couldnt make it up there myself.... it was a solid mass of people between me and the stage, but I guess this is where being a girl is an advantage, because people let me through. Once I got up there I found myself almost entirely surrounded by people I knew... which was great, since I didnt get squashed during the set! Rich Horner was in front of me, and in front of him was the metal barrier, so I couldnt have gotten any closer if Id tried. I was exactly stage center, right in front of Russ; Im telling you, I could have died a happy woman after that set. I definitely went nuts, and the guys played an awesome set, as usual. Every once in a while I would apparently be out of sync with the headbanging; for my sins I got to eat Ricks and/or Richs hair, and once Rich totally clocked me on the noggin as his head was coming back and I was moving forward... but fortunately the adrenaline from the show totally covered any pain. :) It was a totally amazing experience, and I was completely stiff afterwards... my knees wouldnt bend and my back felt completely immobile, but it was all worth it.

    to be continued....

I hung out with some folks at the Granada for a while after the show, but as I was pretty exhausted & still not feeling too great, I thought it wise to conserve my energy, since there was still Saturday night...

But of course first there was the Saturday TEOF luncheon with Symphony X. Thanks to Jax who organized, and everyone else who helped out with it, including of course Uncle Twinkles our inestimable doorkeeper. It was a great time.... I did have a craving for a huge helping of eggs, but you cant have everything, I guess, and I did get to take pictures with the band (thanks to Mark Metzger for galvanizing my wussy self in this regard), who were very nice despite the fact that I couldnt say much other than Hi and thanks. Being tongue-tied sucks! I hung around for a while waiting for some people, and as fate would have it ended up being in what I thought of as the receiving line for SX as they left.. As a result, I got a hug from Russ, and shook hands with Rullo and said some congrats to Lepond... quite funny, but pretty cool as well.

Afterwards I went back to my room to watch some more US Open matches & eventually collapsed to take another nap.

    Saturday:

I went to check out Pagans Mind, since people had been telling me they were worth it. It was okay; I wasnt really blown away by them. They were good, but it was nothing really ear-catching, if you will. Good progmetal, but nothing particularly unique.

During Secret Spheres set I went and got dinner. It had been hours since lunch and I was starving, and I figured it was my best bet, as I was curious about Circle II Circle (Zak Stevens), and DEFINITELY wanted to see Evergrey. I ran into JW & Kez at the gyro place and ended up telling them my infamous tennis net story - Im just good at incriminating myself, what can I say. When I got back to the venue I ran into Rich Horner & a few other people, and I almost regretted not seeing Secret Sphere after Rich described the appearance of their lead singer to me. I say almost, primarily because it would have been great to get a picture of this guy... I hope someone did! But Rich said he had slept through the whole set, which I found pretty hilarous, considering he was sitting pretty close to the stage...

Circle II Circle were good, but not amazing, either. It really did remind me of the Zak-era Savatage sound a LOT, but not QUITE as good. Shame, really. Still, it was fun, and they did a couple of great Sava tunes, which I thought was awesome. The highlight was of course when The Mountain King himself took the stage with the band and sung Gutter Ballet with Zak. That kicked ass! I was especially impressed with the way Zak sounded like Jon at the very end of the song... bonus coolness points!

I was debating whether or not I really wanted to stand for Evergreys set, primarily because I was sure it would get crowded and I was much more likely to get squashed than during SX, but I eventually hauled my lazy ass out to the floor, since its definitely a band whose music I was ready to throw myself into. I ran into Aki on the floor, who was very nice and helped me get a good spot NOT directly behind some big dude with a neck as big as his head (I always find myself stuck behind some six and a half foot tall man at a concert... is this some sort of payback for being on the tall side for a woman??). They put on a great set, and I had a pretty good view of the stage, despite being somewhat further back than for SX. Great opportunities to headbang, the only unfortunate was sometimes I couldnt make out Toms vocals over the heavy guitar volume, as he drops into a soft voice during a lot of songs.

After that, I was again totally stiff (I cannot wait to see my chiropractor tomorrow; Im sure hell have some choice things to say about the state of my neck), and took a quick breather during sets. I thought Id hang around and check out Rage, since a lot of people were into them, and I liked a couple of songs Id heard in mp3 format. Alas, it wasnt worth it. They were exceedingly loud, and while some of their songs were pretty good, it wasnt really worth staying for, IMO. I was very tired, my ears hurt, my feet hurt, I was starting to get a sore throat on top of my congestion, and I wasnt feeling it. When I left, I looked around for a while to see if I could find some of my friends to say goodbye to; Kez was the only one hanging around (everyone else I think was either still on the floor or had left, as I was doing).

On my way to the hotel I ran into a couple I knew from the luncheon, who were also staying at my hotel, and we talked about Rage being not that great. They were apparently hanging out in the VIP lounge and the word from the other bands was that Rage were a bunch of rather obnoxious people; considering the positive vibes from pretty much everyone involved with this festival, I think that was pretty telling. I was originally considering just hanging out in my room, and heading back to the Granada later for some of the after-show party action, but as I sat in my room I noticed how incredibly tired I was. Eventually, I crashed in bed, a little before it would have been the end of the set. So, no wild partying for me! The next morning I stopped by though to say goodbye.

The flight home was uneventful, and there was no traffic on my way home from the aiport. As mentioned, I didnt actually get sicker over the course of the weekend, wonder of wonders, and actually am feeling much better today (the healing powers of metal, anyone?). All in all, it was a fantastic weekend, and I had a great time. I hope that I got nobody else sick while I was there! I met some really cool people and heard some awesome music, and coming in to work yesterday felt like I had been gone for a year... I was totally transported to a different world this past weekend.

..now thats long enough, dontcha think? I miss it already!

    Alex
