Labrie seems to really have on and off nights. I think one of his worst is
the Once in a Livetime album. The recent official bootleg isn't great either.
But if this leads anyone to believe he can't sing live... listen to 8-4-98 at
the casino ballroom, or my personal fave James performance (and DT in
general) -- Lost in the Sky (11/15/93). Nails every note, even during the really
high part at the end of Learning to Live that he goes a little lower now.
Amazing boot in terms of songs, sound quality, and performance.

I think his singing is getting better every year, both live and in the
studio. He's less of a textbook metal singer (in as much as he ever was
one) and more emotional now.

Great review ... how I wish I was there :)
Anyway, I was surfing the Iron Maiden Bulletin Board at the same moment,
reading Matt Smith's (Theocracy) excellent review of Iron Maiden's new Dance
Of Death album. Same person you mentioned in your review, right?
Just out ouf curiosity, how is that album doing in the US?

Hopefully DT's new one will be released about 2 months from now, after I
thoroughly digest Dance Of Death.
Now that would make as the year 2003 go out with the biggest BANG !!!

cheers,

Is that their new one or something? I have In Search of Truth, decent album.
Pretty boring in terms of progressions and such, but powerful vocals and
good guitar solos keep the album from being a total loss.

all three of these are american bands, right? Why
couldn't this happen stateside?

I still haven't been compelled to pick up the new
Spock's yet....i meant to the day it came out, didn't
get around to it, and then....just haven't grabbed it
yet, y'know? I'd absolutely go to a triple bill with
those bands, though. I guess Spock's is one of those
bands I enjoy live more so than on record.....

Ahh, now I know who to blame for my post-PP sniffles! :)

It was great seeing a lot of you there, as always!

For me, the best shows were Nightwish, Evergrey, Circle II Circle,
Mercenary and Redemption. Pagan's Mind were pretty good and afforded a
lot of drunken offstage entertainment also. :) Secret Sphere weren't
really my "bag" but they were visually entertaining.

I didn't check out Rage because I was in Club Vinyl for Evergrey's
meet'n'greet; I didn't see too much of Vanden Plas' set because I was
backstage with Nightwish, who I co-sponsored. (You're forgiven if you
didn't know; this year none of the band sponsors were announced from the
stage, a slight annoyance considering how much I put toward Nightwish's
first US show ever.......oh, well.)

Symphony X were technically competent but suffered from terrible sound
-- Romeo's guitar was cranked up so high in the mix that it was
distorting, an observation made by many people.

I got pics of most of the bands, but not all; in some cases it seems
like they started a bit early (Circle II Circle comes to mind), and I
missed my chance to take the first three songs in the camera-well.
Overall, the quality isn't as good as last year's photos. Ironically,
I got to my own party a bit too late: by the time I got in front for
Nightwish, the camera-well was already packed and I was stuck on the
very end for most of the three-song limit.

Speaking of Nightwish, I'm not sure how many people know about the
back-story there -- and I didn't know what was going on until a
half-hour before their set.
During their set, right before "Walking In the Air," they introduced a
guy on stage from San Diego and dedicated the song to him. His name is
Marc Brueland, and it turns out that he has a rare form of liver cancer
and literally has only a few weeks to live. His dying wish was to see
Nightwish live, and he got his wish...barely.

Glenn told me he was totally in tears when Marc got up out of his
wheelchair on stage-right and started to headbang. He'd been bedridden
the entire day and barely made it there for the show. (His dad came
forward to steady him a few minutes into the song.) I know the band
was extremely touched by the situation: at one point Ewo, Nightwish's
road-manager (and who basically -is- Spinefarm Records) turned to Marc
and said exultantly "One more song and then we're Walking in the Air!"

This is one of the untold stories of ProgPower, and as for my part, my
sponsorship of Nightwish is that much more meaningful, now. Toward the
end of their set (just after I took the photo of Glenn H. and Marc on
the side of the stage) I said to Glenn "It's really cool to be making
dreams come true for a lot of people, here," and Glenn said "I'd be
happy, if I weren't already crying...."

I'm getting a little teary-eyed m'self, thinking about it now.
