As for my top CDs for 2003, ToT is nowhere to be found. As for the ratio,
it's all subjective right? Seems fairly evenly split...but the thing is I
don't recall people having reactions like this to say "Awake". FII and
6DOIT also have their detractors. It's like there are 3 universally loved
albums and three that aren't...not counting ACoS.

Music is definitely subjective. Measuring the opinions about it are not.
Trying to get a fully accuract and objective count of all opinions would be
difficult. And I have to admit I haven't been keeping a written account of
every detractor or positive comment. It didn't and doesn't seem anywhere
near 14-1 though. That measurement would be subjective though, according to
who the persons friends are, which forums he/she visits, etc...

I was never a huge fan of I&W or Awake, and I definitely don't like WDADU.
Oh sure, I bought I&W and Awake when they first came out, but I actually
never played them much except for "Pull Me Under" and "Space Dye Vest",
believe it or not. I didn't buy ACoS when it first came out. It was
actually when I got FII that I started to get in to them more (I heard
"Burning My Soul" on the radio...not my favorite DT tune either, but it
reminded me of them again). I then went back and listened to I&W and Awake
more, and realized those CD's were better than I originally thought. And
things exploded from there for me...
I don't care for Charlie Dominici's screeching vocals on WDADU, but for some
people, that is their favorite DT album. That's one reason I love those
songs when James sings...it shows the full potential, IMHO.
I agree that there are generally more people who love I&W, Awake and SFAM
versus WDADU, FII and TOT. The end result is that it doesn't matter to
anyone individually. It's what each person likes.
Anyhow, I'm rambling. Each of us can enjoy TOT...or not. ;-)

Interesting perspective, Rick. And I always rank Pull Me Under and SDV as
favorites. I still love PMU. I've heard it a billion times and it has
never gotten old. My own subjective ranking of DT's stuff winds up taking a
percentage angle much like the original post. He mentioned (I think) that
he liked a higher percentage of 6DOIT than ToT. I agree but I think 6DOIT
has a better change if only because it is a double album. I do think it
could have been a single but at what cost? I'd hate to have them sacrifice
material I liked for the material on there that I don't. ToT is a different
animal though. For me, it's the first time that I notice cracks in the
armor. The percentage on ToT is probably the same for me as 6DOIT but with
ToT I like parts of songs rather than ALL of the songs. I've never had that
happen with DT. For example, I am the only person on this list that loves
"You Not Me" and I like the whole song...while I cannot stand "Just Let Me
Breathe". And both songs could have been longer and run the risk of adding
filler. Most of DT's longer tracks flow fine for me except for some of the
ToT stuff. It's strange. When I listen to it, it sounds almost calculated.
Anyway, that's all subjective and yeah I am rambling as usual.

Isn't it strange with PMU? Just when I think I'm sick of it, I hear it again and I find myself jammin' to it. I have found this especially the last two times I've seen DT as they've played it both times. It really seems to get everyone in the crowd head bangin' too.

That is an EXCELLENT point, and I feel EXACTLY the same. I often hear people complain that certain CD's, especially double CD sets, are "too long" or the band "should have done a better job of editing." I've heard this with DT, and I've heard it even more with bands such as The Flower Kings, another of my favorites.
I too would rather have ALL the music that the band is willing to give me and I'll make the decision what I do and don't like. If it bugs me enough, I'll burn one CD of just the songs I like. It's never gotten to that for me though.
Plus, you never know at what point a CD will "turn around" for you. I remember on the first couple of listens that I really didn't think TOT was all that special. But I found myself continuing to play it and really enjoying it. Then it finally "clicked" and I realized how much I liked it. It doesn't bother me that much that it is derivative in some spots. Of course, that's how I feel now. I could change my mind in a year...or two. Heck, I remember thinking that Nirvana's Nevermind was one of my Top Ten albums of all-time. I don't feel that way now, but a lot of the reason is because it was so overplayed by radio and MTV (remember when MTV used to play music?).

I don't find it all that unusual that you like YNM but not JLMB. Myself, I like both of them but their not my favorite DT tracks. My favorite tracks on FII are "New Millenium", "Peruvian Skies" and "Hell's Kitchen."

The only thing that redeems that song at all for me is the lryics. Anything that has a go at Kurt Cobain is all right by me, even if the song is shit boring :P
