Hey, speaking of "way back in '98", etc. -- isn't this list about to celebrate a 10-year Anniversary?

I joined in '95 and seem to remember hearing that it had been around for a year or so before that. Maybe it was more than that and you guys already celebrated, which would make me a total ass for missing it. I hope that's not the case . . . ;^)

    Anybody know for sure?

I agree. Though despite that it makes some people uncomfortable, I was
pleased to see that level of energy in the crowd. A lot of times you'll see
the floor having a blast and the balcony just standing there staring, but
that entire club was banging some head all night.

    > James was right on pretty much all
    > night; i don't think he missed anything at all. JM was audible, which

    > and he was awesome.

Absolutely. This is the first time I've ever seen DT (this was my fifth or
sixth show) in which I could actually hear JM. I love the bass parts on the
new disc, so it's pleasing that they finally turned him the hell up.

Unfortunately I was in the back balcony (got there late and have a sprained
ankle anyway, no jostling on the floor for me) so JP was hidden behind a
speaker stack the entire time, but it gave me a nice chance to watch JR and
especially JM, whose playing I have always found hypnotic to watch.

I was worried when someone on the jam the other day was saying James was
sounding tired and pulling flat; I know how hard vocal troubles can be to
shake, but he was perfect, and the band was totally tight. The sound mix was
the best I've ever heard from them (and 9:30 Club is famous for impeccable
    sound).

    > tribute/jam thing was excellent, i thought. MP from a technical and
    > execution standpoint was excellent. but he didn't seem to be the same
    > old Mike -- you know always instigating hyjinx and stuff on stage.

Wasn't watching Mike most of the night. Made it a rather different
    experience. He sounded perfect, though.

I'm just glad it wasn't a repeat of the Pier Six show where he basically took
the night off and just played punk beats all night long. (But that show had
the guys kicking a soccer ball around on stage, which was amusing at least.)

    > PS. does anyone know what the `ERT!' on the back of Mike's `eat my ass and
    > balls' t-shirts means? i'm stumped.

Last night during "As I Am," they substituted "EAT MY ASS AND BALLS" for one
of the times the words are 'take me as I am.' No one in the club seemed to
notice, but I was cackling like hell in the back row.

One solid show. Probably the best I've seen them in the seven years I've been
    listening.

Ribs aren't the best option. Body slam them to the
ground if you have an opening...Oh yeah, I forgot,
it's not a Rugby match you paid money to go to...

I guess that's the problem with bands like DT. You get
a mixed crowd. Some are there for the music, some are
there for the exercise. Ironically, it's so much like
a sporting competition that even the penalties are the
same. I.e. person "A" commits the first penalty,
person "B" retaliates, and person "B" gets kicked out
by the officials! (At a show where moshing is "not
allowed". Some places have cracked down on it, at
    least at some shows.).

p.s. Whoever talked about Yngwie and his picks was
correct. You get showered by them. He hit me in the
eye once, that prick! I mean that pick...

Wow, I never thought of this :)

The earliest jam I have is 228 (though I am pretty sure someone has some
of the even ealier ones) and it's dated:

    Date: Wed, 27 Oct 93 21:29:49 PDT

So, we are long past 10 years. Who has the rest of the archives? I
think I may have 228->current. If you want to see them in a less than
    organized fashion:

OK, I may or may not get slammed for this but I have to say it. I downloaded the bootleg of the current tour, and I have to say something. Bar none, In the Name of God is the best song on Train of Thought, but is was close to torture to listen to it on that boot. As a whole I think that they rushed thru the 2nd verse, as well as the instrumental section (specifically the section with the bad ass John Myung bass line in it.) and for the most part it was very tough to listen to James. On the CD, he is amazing on that song, hopefully it was just that night but he seemed to be a bit shy on the high notes, and in most parts just flat. I noticed that they also seemed to rush the instrumental portion of Endless Sacrifice. Jordans Keyboard break in there blows by before you even know what he was playing. I guess the true test for me will be on Friday at the Tower Theater. Counting down the hours till show time. I am anticipating a great show as usual, however it sounded like they are rushing a few things in the new material on this particular night. Don't get me wrong, Mega Freakin Fan here, and always will be, just wanted to offer my 2 pennies on this.

I was watching that from the comfort of the first balcony, thankfully. It looked brutal at times, but everyone seemed to take the moshing pretty well, and the crowd surfing was minimal.

I don't know if I would call it unmotivated, as he was all over the monster kit all night, and making faces into the mini-cams, too. And he was doing his typical stick twirling and tossing, though no playing catch with Jose this time.

ERT is a term that was coined on the Mike Portnoy Forum. It has no specific meaning, yet it means a LOT. ;)

I didn't realize that this many jammers would be at the show. Maybe you heard me. I was the one in the balcony periodically yelling "BAFUUUUUUUUUUU!!!" before the show.........couldn't get any response, though I did turn a few heads.

Does anybody know if JP is using heavier strings when he tunes a 6-string down for various songs on TOT?

My low E when dropped down to C# or C is absolute mushc when palm-muting rhythm parts, and that's with a .050". All I can think is that my custom at 24.9" is just not providing enough tension, compared to JP's guitars at standard Fender scale length. Heck, dropping from low E to D is still flabby in terms of accurate pitch...

thanks Chris, wishing he didn't have perfect pitch - it really is very overrated.

I can't resist. Have any Windows users tried Zinf? I use it on Linux and it's great - plays oggs and has a lightweight iTunes-like windows as well. http://www.zinf.org/

Made it back to Georgia from D.C. I thought the show was excellent. My son loved every minute of it. He was banging his head so hard that the next day he said his neck hurts. At the end, he got to slap MP's hand. I'm sure he'll never forget it. Also after the band left the stage, one of the crew guys comes up to us and throws a crumpled up piece of paper. I opened it, and it was the setlist! I think its from JP's tech, because on the left of each song there are tunings and references to 7 which I think means 7 string, plus on the right are a bunch of numbers which I can't figure out. Anyway, here is the order:

AS I AM THIS DYING SOUL BEYOND THIS LIFE(with extended jamming in the FZ section) HOLLOW YEARS CAUGHT IN A WEB ENDLESS SACRIFICE FINALLY FREE

    intermission

TRIAL OF TEARS HONOR THY FATHER JR SOLO ONLY A MATTER OF TIME VACANT STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS PULL ME UNDER

    encore

    IN THE NAME OF GOD

By the way, to the drummer guy I was next to, I forgot to give you my email address. Here it is: drummerdream@yahoo.com Thanks.

Awesome. That's pretty much what I was waiting for to hear if DT's Ytsejam Records version was better than the original boots going around before. Sounds like a good purchase. Thanks Steve.

Got my copy of Dream Theater's Master of Puppets yesterday. Kicks ass! This sound board recording is way better quality than the audience boot that was circulating. You can't hear the audience though which kinda makes the audience boot pretty cool too. I love that DT is releasing these CDs. Very cool indeed. Cheers, Steve

My only problem with the ytsejam records release of this is that Jordan is burried in the mix, which bummed me out because I wanted to hear how he handled the parts. I mean, it's not like Metalica has keyboards or anything, so I wanted to see what he did during the heavier parts.

They may speed up their pace in concerts to try to squeeze more songs in their usual 2.5 to 3 hour shows... Loooove that Canadian boot from Chris.

Not slammin' ya Stan.... Jammin' with ya..

-----Original Message----- From: Stan Tyszka [mailto:soculese@comcast.net]

Too bad it's not ETR... that'd be "Eat the Rich!"... but then that'd be Lemmy and Motorhead.. bah..

Shouting BAAAFFUUUUU at DT concerts is a tradition. Specifically a Ytsejam tradition. Only people from this mailing list can enjoy that, and that's why it's so damn funny.
