I once heard the introduction (up to but not including the "Hold it now,
etc." part) to Take The Time in the background of a radio ad for a monster
truck show. No kidding -- this was a crappy metal station in Chicago.

Not a flame, but in all honesty, this is hard to believe..."You" said this
was an anon server....the info is interesting, but I'm having a really hard
time buying it. The same thing happened on Prodigy (god help me) a long
time ago, when somebody named "Geoff Tate" posted.

If Lars is so great, ask him why he totally wimped out
on the Black album. (because Lars wanted stuff that
was easier to play (what Lars said himself)). Then,
maybye, you could get into a fight with him concerning
whether or not Metallica has sold out. Have some fun
with the little bastard, then let him listen to Under
a Glass Moon or A Fortune in Lies to hear some real
      double-bass stuff.

If Frank Zappa were alive I'd invite him over to your house so he could
pummel you with a metronome and a conductor's baton. Please don't attempt
to define for us what music is or is not about -- even if such a thing
could be done, I somehow suspect you have less than zero authority to do so.

The tabs are helpful to those of us that are average at best.
I WISH I could figure out some of the tough stuff by myself.
I WISH I could improvise and play with feeling.
I WISH I could right good solos.

Unfortunately, I'm not good at any of these. In the mean time
I enjoy learning how to play things from the tabs. Keep 'em
    coming!

I think it's more technique. The main thing I don't like about Labrie
(I'm not bashing him or anything), is that whenever he get's lost in the
lyrics he just starts screaming (i.e. Killing hand on DOE), If he had a
little more formal training on how to take care of that live, he'd be
quite impressive. Also, did Labrie go to the "Don Dokken School of
Performing," (I'm not knocking on either one's ability to sing), He's
just kind of there when on stage, and never really makes his presence
know during the solos (he just goes in the back and moshes, or takes a
break). I think that if James worked on these two areas, he'd be totally
killer!!! That's just my two cents worth. This is just my opinion, and no
offense is to be taken!!! Later fellow DT fans!!

I just got a Galactic Cowboys video boot (one that a few others
on Ytsejam might have) and I thought I'd mention something for the Dream
Theater fans... during Pump Up The Space Suit, Mike Portnoy of DT runs on
stage and gives Ben Huggins (lead vocals, GC) a huge bearhug, and
proceeds to sing along for the rest of the song... Then, during Dream
Theater's show that night, all of the Cowboys come on stage to sing along
with Take the Time. Great shows!!

For those interested, the GC show in particular (due to some
stroke of oddity, my tape of GC's opener is of lower generation/better
quality than my tape of DT's show!! hehe) was really fantastic. they
played the setlist that most of us got with an energy that was really way
out. I saw DT/GC in Tuscon, AZ; Tempe, AZ (Phoenix), and San Diego, and
the 'Boys got up and pumped in Tempe, but at San Fran they REALLY flew
high above. The song selection also was fantastic.... just wish I also
could have heard Still Life of Peace or Blind on it.

Just for the record, they played:
                    Kill Floor
                    Space In Your Face
                    You Make Me Smile
                    Circles In The Field
                    I Do What I Do
                    I'm Not Amused
                    About Mrs. Leslie
                    If I Were A Killer
                    Pump Up The Space Suit
                    Sea Of Tranquility

One final question and I'll leave the digest alone... I got the
CD of Space In Your Face, with the secret tracks -21 and 32. I got stuck
with a tape however of GC's first album. Am I missing any secret tracks
and if so, what are they? The tape has ten songs listed and ten on the
    actual tape.

In fairness to Geffen, I have to point out that Atlanta radio really
DOES suck, compared to many middle and large markets in the US. There
are no stations in town who will play new rock that isn't either
'safe' (by established artists, like Yes or Pink Floyd, or relatively
soft, like Screaming Cheetah Wheelies) or classifiable as alternative.
For mainstream new rock and roll, these really are the darkest of
times in Atlanta. Don't believe me? Try 98rock in Tampa, FL. Wow!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to the circle of fifths, and the pattern of sharps and flats: If the alphabet continued as notes progressed (i.e, a,a#,b,c,c#...g#,h,i,j,etc) eventually the key of Z Major would have 4 sharps. I just have to tell everyone that this letter is absolutly, 100% completly FAKE!!! I find many things difficult to believe in here, and after talking to both Mike Bahr, and someone close to the band about this letter, first, someone has gotten into Mike's account, and I guess evedently saw that he likes DT, and saw there was some info from a few weeks ago about a new CD possible by the end of the month, so made up this story... I also talked to someone close to the band, and none of this stuff said could POSSIBLE be true... Just from the wording and everything... Let me explain some of the things that I know from this person's response, becuase, unfortunatly, some of this is actually believable, which might make you thing that it is real:

    > Date: Wed, 6 Apr 1994 21:30:33 -40962758 (MST) > From: Michael Bahr <garion@indirect.com>

Well, first, as I said, Mike told me that his account has been used by someone else... That really is all that is needed to be said, but let me continue...

    > I gave a friend a copy of some demos we made for our upcoming album,

First, would any of you possible think that if in fact, he did give these demos to someone, that he would ANNOUNCE it here in a public place... If these demos got out... would you actually think that it was given out by a member of the band... I mean, there would be nothing gained by something like this...

    > this, I'm glad we as Dream Theater have attracted some fans, and I want > to thank you all for listening to us, coming to see us play, and buying > our tapes!

The person on my side tells me that Mike NEVER refers to recordings as tapes... he resorts back to the old days of music, and calls them ALBUMS.

    > Our upcoming album has no title yet. Kevin and I will decide what to call > it a little later when all the songs are ready for production.

Again, DT does everything together... Just look at I&W where just about every songs has IMAGES: Dream Theater... This is not the kind of diecision that they make with 2 people...

    > for us but he seems to have prior commitments elsewhere. We expect to > record at the end of the month and have the new tape out for sale near > the end of May, if time permits.

Recording, editing, mastering, and PRESSING thousands of copies in how long is that... A MONTH!!! Nope... sorry, but it just isn't going to happen.

    > I notice a lot of talk about bootlegg collecting here on the list. I wish > you guys the best of luck. It really means a lot to me that you guys > would go out of your way to get bootlegg tapes of us.

If, and I mean if he did not mind bootlegging, would it really be PRACTICAL to say something like this, in a public forum... The real problem is that it _sounds_ believable... him saying that "means a lot to me that you go out of the way" I first read that, and though, possibly, but no... he couldn't say it in a PUBLIC place like this...

    > band would rather you didn't. I have a huge collection, and I am taping > most every show we play. One day I will probably release a lot of it to > collectors. Already I have let a small few of my tapes out to a few > friends, mostly tapes from earlier tours and before our first album, > "When Dream & Day Unite".

Ok... if they record the shows, would they REALLY say it... isn't that just calling for someone to break into where they are stored? I mean, from reading on NMS about how a good portion of the soundboard bootlegs are produced, they are from people breaking into their storage location and stealing them. Would he really "invite" people in to steal these tapes...

    > Thats all I really have time to write. I assure you this mail is really > from me, I am using this anonymous server because I don't have time to > read or answer mail replies, or even log on more than once a month or so. > As our album gets closer to done I will drop by again. Thank you all, and > I hope you keep listening. >

Here is what I found most confusing... How would it possible be anonymous, since it is coming through a listserv that PRINTS names at the top of the letter. Also, again, after talking to the person that I know... Mike doesn't use computers, and woundn't even know what the hell and "anonymous server" is.

    > - MIKE PORTNOY > DREAM THEATER, DRUMS & PERCUSSION

I am sorry to say, but it looks like someone has dropped into our little party of Dream Theater information, and tried to get our hopes up. I really do hope that whoever wrote this letter gets caught... I mean, when I first read it, I actually found somethings believable, but the further that I read in... the stranger that some things said... Perhapse someone just had a little too much April Fools jokes from the NMS April Fools issue... :)

Anyway, sorry to spoil the fun...

Just thought that I'd post a little something that I found on NMS that you would appreciate... There has been something going on on alt.music.rush that was brought over to NMS comparing Peart to Bonham. Anyway, here is part of what someone had to say about the issue...

Well, first of all, HSH is a very good show also, but the reason that I said HSH is becuase it actually HAS Moon Bubbles. MB leads right into the AD/AH/KH combination, so it would be difficult to make it sound like they are from the same show.

Well, it is... sorta. I have a copy of the radio broadcast, which is the entire show. There are also others here on YJ that have it...

    >> Hmm.. thats weird because I have the Dream Out Loud CD, and I can`t hear any > > radio static on my copy,

Listen to it right around the Wait For Sleep/ Surrounded medley... If it isn't static, then it is something else, but there is definatly some problems with the recording.

Yeah... mine has Pup, but listen to the long instrumental portion in the middle of TTT. It is a little more subtle then the eMpTyV cut, but there is a cut. Also, with LtL, they end the song in the middle, in yet another instrumetnal portion...
