    DT fan? :)

    Hey, Mike!

Last night I heard six unmastered tracks from the album! You are not going to
believe "Erotomania"!! Imagine early Genesis--the influence is unmistakable.
"6:00" is over the top and the first single, "Lie," is the best thing Dream
Theater has written from a purely hook-laden/chorus point of view (it's a great
leap from "Pull Me Under"). I hear the new Dream Theater site on the Web (which
I'm contributing files to) is going to upload "Lie" on Monday (8/8--the eve of
    the anniversary of Nixon's resignation--just a coincidence, I'm sure)--three
weeks before the track is released to radio!. There are also going to be lyrics
from _Awake_, JPEGs of the band in the studio, and audio clips of an interview
with the band from a few weeks ago.

I just got the low-down on the DT tour. Apparently they
are really trying to get Fates Warning to Tour with them.
At this point its up in the air as to whether or not it will
actually happen. I know almost for a fact that, shhhhhhhhh,
they are going to be playing a club date in New Britain, CT
    at
"the Sting" in October..its supposed to be one of those suprise
shows or something. Awesomme! I'm there dude. Anyway there are
also probably gonna be doing an "instore" appearance at one
of my favorite hideaway record places......

      My two sense:

Before everyone starts making their own judgements on JP's playing,
lets ask a simple question: How many of us were there? Probably not
many.... Therefore everyone is taking the original poster's opinion as
fact. If anyone was there and recorded it (VHS or audio), it would be
helpful to make copies and let peopole purchase them so we could form our
    own opinions.......

For one I'd like to hear it myself, I find it hard to believe that he sucks..

For most of you, the move to the new site was transparent. For a few
people, however, things have been shaky. These unlucky users subscribe,
but once they are subscribed, their posts aren't accepted by the listserv.
I go in and mess with things, and I usually fix it so that future posts
by those users work. Some times it requires multiple attempts before
    I get this to work.

When I see these rejected messages, I forward them to the list and I
prepend "Forward from xxx" to the front of their message. Listserv
sees my name and accepts the message even though "xxx" was the real
    author of the message.

When privately responding to "kbibb@arastar.com", be careful because
I might not be the person that you want. Double check the message for
that "Forward from xxx" line. If it's there, send mail to "xxx"
    instead.

    Thank you!

OK, two questions from a totally freaked DT fan:

    1. How do you guys get a hold of all this new DT info? It's amazing, you guys must have connections.

    2. Is it really true that Lie will be put on the WWW site on MONDAY? And is that really THREE WEEKS before it appears on the radio? And if so, where is the WWW site? (Is it the one on //ftp.netcom.com/pub/drkhoe/www?).

Well, that's really more than two questions. Let's just say I'm a little bit excited about all this.

Let balls and chunk surround you,

Well, it seems to me that Petrucci's always been good at some interpretation (granted, not huge songs off the top of his head). I imagine that improvision is a bit like writing; occassionally one gets writer's block. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems that at least part of each concert is improvised a little bit. Maybe full-piece jams (especially when he's not the only guitarist out there) are not his specialty (apparently not).

It's kind of painful to read through mail with comments like, "I can't believe he sucks." Christ, I didn't mean to give you guys the impression that I think John P. is lame all-around. There's no denying that the songs on I&W are good songs, and the guitar is well played. I really believe that he's spent so much time working with DT and his own chops that he simply can't interact with other (non-DT) musicians anymore. You have to understand what it's like being in an environment like the NGSW. I would walk down the hall and these fifteen year old kids would be playing Petrucci's stuff, note-for-note, up to speed. After awhile, the chops really don't impress you as much because basically anyone (and up there, everyone) can learn to do it eventually. It's interesting, however, that almost none of those AYs (Angry Youths -- clones of each other who wear black Metallica or Megadeth T-shirt, black shorts, black hi-tops, play lots of sweep arpeggios, you all know the type) could play 1) anything that they hadn't learned off of a record 2) anything improvised 3) anything slow and melodic. Remember, the three guitarists who started the fast picking thing (Morse, McGlaughlin, Di Meola) all are monster improvisors. They use it as an effect, another way to convey emotion. I guess it all depends on what you like. There are so many people that play fast nowadays that that by itself doesn't impress me anymore. But if you play fast and sound original -- there's the ticket. Or, if you improvise and if you can make that fast picking really mesh with what's going on musically -- wow. That's why Andy Timmons just blew me away. Anyone in the Dallas, Texas area already knows what I'm talking about, I'm sure. Andy does all of the fast picking, the arpeggio stuff, all of the "'90s modern chops" cliched licks. What makes Andy stellar is that he knows when and WHEN NOT to use them. He played with an ADA MP-1 preamp and a Rocktron Intellifex, with a 5150 head for the power amp only, into a 4x12 cab. Pretty basic stuff. But the sound that he got out of that rig was evolutionary. I played through it a couple times and it still sounded great, but not even close to the tone that he got. If, as a player, you've got your sound together like that, then you've got something to write home about.

Just for something else to chew on when casting your votes for or against J.P. in the upcoming elections for God :)

A drummer considered godlike by many relates that one of his favorite drummers was Keith Moon, whom he admired for his ability to improvise because it was something he himself could not do. Consequently, he writes out all his parts ahead of time. The drummer in question? Why, one of M.P.'s biggest influences, the one and only Neil Peart.

    I didn't read this myself, but got it on good authority (came from an interview with N.P. that my drum teacher saw/read). __ Chris Anderson / /\ / / \ Drummer/Vocalist / / /\ \ / /_/\ \ \ Averted Vision / _____\ \ \ / /\______ \ \ /_/ / \_\ \ \ \ \ / / / \ \ \ / / / \ \ \ / / / \ \ \/ / / \ \/ / / \ / / \/_/

I have to defend Gilmour on this.... remember that (a) David wrote the song! It was originally going to be on his solo album (I don't remember which one). Waters wrote the lyrics, I believe, and took credit for the whole thing. (b) Dave's licks on guitar might've been "repetitive and tasteless", but his bass playing was incredible (yes, he DID play the bass on Comfortably Numb originally, for the album!)

Oh dear. Don't tell Chick Corea & co. that they aren't technically proficient. Don't tell Chick Corea & co. that they can't improvise. Anyone ever heard of Weather Report? How about Tribal Tech? Maybe their choice of instruments and style is different (jazz fusion vs. progressive metal), but they are as tight as anyone out there and they rip. Not contemporary enough for you? How about Zappa? The Dixie Dregs? (Anyone who hasn't got the new Dregs' record yet should immediately run to the store and get it!) Is there anyone out there who would say that what these players are doing is not progressive?

All of these bands and musicians are highly proficient technical players, and ALL OF THEIR SOLOS ARE IMPROVISED. Someone told me the solo to "Hotel California" was improvised. How about Frampton's live "Do You Feel Like We Do?" Most of EVH's solos were one-take improvs that he went back and learned later. I'm not saying that it's uncool to write out solos before hand; hell, even I have to do that. To me, it's the mark of a really astonishing player when someone can walk into a studio or onto a stage and play something in one take that is better than anything most people could work out. Check out Steve Morse, Eric Johnson and (!!!) Shawn Lane. All of their solos are improvised. > Improv. does not the player make.

Sorry, I disagree. Maybe you don't need improv. ability to be a player, but you do need it to be a well-rounded musician.
