Well, I did try downloading the studio?.au files from the FTP site...
(For those of you with a SB compatible card, I found an AU player at
oak.oakland.edu in /pub/msdos/sound/plany.zip). The files were
interviews with Mike & John P... Part of what Mike said was that Lie
was among the heaviest songs on Lie, and that Awake has many diverse
directions, from "balls to the wall" songs like Lie, to softer songs
(like WFS, I imagine) to very progressive...

Also, again, from what I have _heard_, Kevin has even _MORE_ diverse
    influences...

That I doubt... They wouldn't have gotten such an excelent
replacement such as Jens if they were going to get rid of the keys...

Well... obviously, Jens isn't Kevin... but Kevin isn't Jens
either... obviously every musician will have some different ways of
interpreting the music and how it should be played... I think that
Kevin was certainly an incredible musician... but so is Jens...

    > Well, its only a matter of time before we find out.
    >
like how you got the DT reference in there... :)

    This just in:

Though Jens J is the front runner to be the keyboardist for Dream Theater, the band is STILL conducting auditions. Yeah, I know, a reliable source confirmed Jens earlier in the week but now such confirmation seems to be premature....bear with me--I'm trying to get the best info to you guys (and gals? Please tell me there are some women here, too!) as quickly as I can.

You're right, Zach. I am a prog fan and rarely listen to metal. Kevin was the main reason I like DT (although John's great leads are a close second). But, I've since been turned on to Queensryche and Fate's Warning. While these bands are good bands, they certainly lack the extra dimension that Dream Theater has- Kevin Moore.

I hope they don't lose their balance.

Here are my thoughts and responses to what's been going on. You may have seen the original version of the first couple, but they're all updated.

    >>Well, I downloaded Lie... the complete thing... and playing through a >>SB16 Pro... and I must say, I'm not too impressed... the intro was good, >>the outro was good... but the rest sounds like Pantera with a progressive >>touch...

    >>Hope it's different on the album...

    >Oh, I must certainly disagree. This tune kicks ass. It did take me about >two listens to get used to it, but I've listened to it about forty times in >two days. Sure its heavier, but its so interesting. Even if you make the >comparison to Pantera, fine, Pantera only lacks because of Phil's vocals (no >flames please). Labrie certainly makes this non-Pantera. This song is just >ball-crushing fantastic. > >KAI

The more I listen, the more I love it. This tune rocks. I can't wait to hear the album.

Did someone say that part of the .wav file has part of another song on it or somthing. Like, is the intro really part of another song. I'm confused.

Any more info about different songs being uploaded?

Could this be a good time to start our in depth discussions that someone had brought up last month, or haven't enough people heard this song yet? I've listened to it so many times, I'm getting it down about as well as I have the I&W stuff down.

I'm still working on getting a recording of it, off the system, but mine jumps suddenly in at the start, I think cutting off a beat or two. Then at the end I got a little static (after the song is over) and then a strike on the bass, almost indicating another song. Maybe some data got chopped off the front and pasted at the end. Anyone else have this problem?

    >LIE. I think the song should now be called BETRAY. > >sadly, (and I'm still not sure I believe it)

O.K. I was distraught at first. I thought DT is a unit, the 5 (or at least the 4 instrumentalists), and I was pissed. I'm starting to believe the news now because, well, you guys insist it is true. I'm also starting to get over it. I have to admit though, if not Kevin, it should be Jens. He is simply awesome. So is Kevin. I think Jens will work well and I'm looking forward to hearing him with them. I'm also hoping that Jens puts on a better show live than Kev did. He's awesome, but he's boring to watch. I'm very glad that Kev is on Awake, and that he wrote the tunes with them. The FAQ says he WAS a member of DT from 1986 until OCT 8, 1994. Is this correct? Is that the day he gave, or should it be Aug. 8 ? I wish both could be in the band.

Anyway, welcome aboard Jens. A couple of things about this Jens incident are bothering me. First of all, someone wrote a message along the lines of "..this Jens guy is on the net..." Well this Jens guy is an extraordinary musician. I understand that you're upset, but even when I was upset about it, I have always respected Jens. You act as if you've never heard of him. If you haven't, shame on you and immediately go buy the Yngwie collection up through Live in Leningrad (someone correct me if this is slightly off - all 5 - RF, MO, T, O, LiL ? - I think he was on all 5) and if you have, shame on you for your attitude. O.K. enough about that. The other thing about this that bothers me is that it took an incident such as this to find out that Jens is an internet user, let alone the fact that he might be on Ytsejam. Is he? This pisses me off. The purpose of this is to exchange information, and it was never brought to my attention that this was true.

    > >Thanks for your help. > >C-man

who's C-man. With a .sig stating Tori Amos info, it sounds like it could be Kev himself. na.

How do we access these boards. Is it just USENET news? Which path are they kept in?

There ya go, so we will have something to look forward to on the album. Its different. Is this the reason mine cuts in so nastily?

    >[Note from kbibb@arastar.com: it is 165.247.1.20 ]

I downloaded the file on Monday and had no problems, didn't try to access on Tue, but Wednesday, I could not get in. So you may not need the numbers, maybe the site was just unavailable.

    >Please inform us that WHO told Kev's leaving. Did DT announce about it? >Did Kevin make his leaving cleaer? I don't believe about it without comment

I do agree that we are entitled to know exactly who this information is coming from. So lets have it, I'm getting tired of people sitting on information.

    >Hi, all: > >I'm working with the band in setting up a week of live online conferences >from September 6-9. Ideally, we're thinking of appearing three or four

    Who the hell are you?

    > The news came from DT themselves... from their front office. >Haven't you wondered why we keep getting all this earaly info and songs >like Lie before they get released? :) It's thanks to THEM! hehe

    >Mike/garion@indirect.com/belar@aol.com

And how do you get it?

    > Ok, from what someone said, this Jens guy is supposedly on this list??

This is what I was refering to.

    > Yes, Jens is on the list, and no, don't go poking for his email >address, because if he gets mail flood, our great fortune at having a >direct line to Dream Theater themselves goes bye-bye. I left it out of >the FAQ and it won't be in new posts, so the way I figure it, there are >only two ways to get it. One of those two is to have it given to you for >no reason. :) The other? Think for a minute...

Was Jens a connection to DT before this all happened, or just recently. Its starting to sound like he's been rehersing with them for some time now (the FAQ says this will in absolutely no way inhibit DT's momentum) and they were (are, since we probably shouldn't know about it yet) going to announce it in October after the album comes out. Am I even close on this? The deduction interests me because replacing a band member NEVER "will in absolutely no way inhibit DT's momentum" unless Jens has been with them while the members worked on the album. I don't know, I'm still real confused.

That's about it, sorry it was so long, but I wanted to reply to all of this and didn't have time all week. And yes I know I have a lot of questions, but these ones aren't answered in the FAQ.

Hi... I just found this cool little bio at the new DT WWW site...

It isn't just that nobody else sounds like Dream Theater...no one else can. And it isn't just the chops; sure, the band (vocalist, James LaBrie, guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, keyboardist Kevin Moore and drummer Mike Portnoy) have established themselves as virtuosos, each player quite capable of running through multiple tempo changes with one hand while eating tuna fish sandwiches with the other. No, what sets Dream Theater apart from everone else is their unmitigated chutzpah; their imaginative and completely elastic approach to songwriting teeters on the edge of musical chaos, yet the band somehow always manages to weave a patchwork of abstract parts into crisp, rock solid arrangements. Few bands bands would (or could) attempt to pull anything off that daring. And don't make the mistake of trying to pigeon-hole this by sticking the "progressive metal" tag on it...there's more to the band's big picture than that. The end result of Dream Theater's "savoir-faire" approach to heavy metal is a provocative style of hard music based on artsy crunch. And _that_ sound is Dream Theater's, and Dream Theater's alone.

The band made their mark on the scene with last year's _Images And Words_, an ambitious album that took them out of their dingy little basement rehearsal room in Long Island and thrust them into the international limelight. The catchy chorus of breakthrough single "Pull Me Under" became a mainstream mantra, with everyone from casual daytime MTV watchers to the most ardent heavy metal fans singing both the song and the band's praises. The record offered itself as a musical life preserver to those listeners left drowning helplessly in a sea of grunge. All of a sudden, Dream Theater's musical genderbending became the alternative to "the alternative."

And the band makes no apologies about being....different.

"Al1 the bands that've influenced us have been around for years because they carved their own niche," says Petrucci. "_That's_ the key to longevity. You can't be a part of any current wave or trend. Instead, you've got to create one."

On new album _Awake_, the band takes major strides toward creating that wave by once again refusing to play music by anyone's rules but their own. The album clocks in at seventy-five minutes--the maximum amount of time available on compact disc. "We had written a lot of material," explains Petrucci, "And we didn't want to have to sacrifice any of it. We felt that all of the songs were strong enough to go on the album, so we had no choice but to go for the full max and put them all on."

Produced by Duane Baron and John Purdell (known for their work with artists such as Ozzy Osbourne and Heart) at One On One Studios in California, _Awake_ is everything a hard msuic album should be: full of textural complications, unexpected hooks and articulate playing.

And while Dream Theater's fans have come to expect the band's unrestrained outpouring of chops and melodic finesse, they may be surprised by some of the heavier material here. Songs like "Caught In A Web," "6:00" and "Lie" are pure knucklebusters, complete with thick, gnarled riffs, amps turned to 11 and the kind of bruising, rhythmic surge that proves these guys can easily hang with metal heavyweights like Pantera and Metallica.

This newfound sense of musical angst keeps with the theme that runs through the album; where _Images & Words_ dealt with the starry-eyed optimism of a young band strving to reach their goals and ideals, _Awake_ basically sees the band dealing with things more realistically, more "awake" as it were. It's here that the band applies the experiences of the past year and a half to their current lives, as they grapple with the frustrations and disappointments that go hand in hand with the successes of dreams realized. That's not to say that the entire album is filled with vented anger; Dream Theater's single-minded intensity allows them to sprint through a variety of styles and moods without pausing for breath. A prime example of that is the luxuriant warmth of "Lifting Shadows Off A Dream," as well as the album's 20-minute mini-marathon, "A Mind Besides Itself." The piece is a combination of three songs: a manic instrumental titled "Erotomania," a gripping middle section titled "Voices" and a closing acoustic passage titled "The Silent Man."

Says Petrucci, "That song just runs the gamut, both emotionally and musically. It has everything--from simple parts where acoustic guitar and vocals are gently weaved together to an all-out intense instrumental section where anything goes. It's pretty crazy," he laughs.

If all you want out of a Dream Theater record is a crank and shredfest, you'll find that here. But if you want something more, you'll find that too. _Awake_ is musical bonanza, flashing moments of both technical brilliance and pop-savviness with songs that are as exhilarating as they are disorienting. Dream Theater realize that they're not making things easy to digest; by breaking down the rigid and traditional structures set up by the metal police, they're shaking things up a bit, forcing both fans and peers alike to rethink their stance on what hard music should be.

"I like to challenge the listener," admits Petrucci, "Because _I_ like to be challenged by the music I listen to. I don't think there's anything wrong with making people think a little."

August of '94 sees the band preparing to shoot a video for the first single "Lies," while simultaneously gearing up for their performance at this year's Foundations Forum in Burbank, Californa. In the fall, they start a headlining tour of large clubs and theaters around the country before hitting Japan and Europe in January. In the Spring, they come back to the States, bent on waking everyone up to what Dream Theater is all about. Open your eyes...your mind will follow.

O.K. since it's considered confirmed...Welcome to DT Jens...I say why whine about the loss of an excellent musician, when he's been replaced by the one i've admired for a long time (and it's not like he can't fill big shoes...anyone who can play for Yngwie for that amount of time without getting fired is definetly a total jem to any band!!!)...I also say that even though Lie is way different...isn't that what DT is all about...being different! I was only able to hear a portion of the song (lie2.wav is only a couple of minutes long)...and it was definetly heavier...but DT has always played what they enjoyed...and if they're happy, then I'm happy! Once again...Welcome to DT Jens...and c-ya on the road!!!

p.s. if you want to reply via private E-mail Jens...feel free!

O.K. I've listened to Lie a couple more times...and I've decided it's totally ingenuous! It's definet "Balls And Chunk..." the mix is smooth (the drums actually sound like Mike's drum kit this time sround!)...Myung is audible for a change (and totally kicks!)...Mr. Petrucci (I'm not worthy of calling him by his first name) has an incredible tone (with a heck of a low end crunch to it...and some cool chops!)...and the Most impressive...and most not in the band anymore <sigh> Mr. Moore (once again WAY NOT WORTHY!!! <good luck Kev in the future!!! I'll buy your albums too!!!>) Is once again doing some way incredible keyborad stuff!!! And last but not least (write this one on the calander folks!!!)...James sounds good!!! (yes...I'm totally coherent...I'm not going mental or anything!)...this is a little more in James' range (is he going to go by Kevin now? Jus wondering)...so hopefully he'll be able to sing live without us having to hear his weak voice crack all the time <big sigh of relief!>...so once again...I'm commending James (miracle!)...and I think this is a cool song (not as complex as it could be...but catchy!), a definite strobe/mosh/total chaos kind of song! SO those of you that have heard it...keep listening...and listen to the individual details of it...it's a lot better that way (I'm weird like that!)...and those of you that haven't, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! Take care fellow DT fans (and the one new member who's also on the net!)...and don't be so sceptical about Awake...only good things will come of it (now you can get two progressive albums at the same time hopefully...DT's, and maybe Kevin's in the near future!). I'll drink to that...I've heard Jens scream out harmonized dual solos with Yngwie, so he can certainly play...but since the track are likely already laid down and for certain they are already written, we won't get a taste of what Jens can do when it comes to writing songs with DT. I'm sure Yngwie didn't give him the time of day during the writing process back in those days - however, I'm a little biased here -> Yngwie has always come off as such a pompous ass, but he sure can play that guitar!

    Later!

Well, I hope some of this time is used to make a booklet as interesting and nice and fitting to the music like the first two were....

Anybody have any word on the shirts, I have sent my name numerous times to the person who is having them made and have had no response. I paid for two and would like to know when they will be mailed out.
