Wow, really a cool biography! And for the first time something makes me
really hungry for the new album! (I didnt share all this enthusiasm here
on the list, its just that i wanted to stay without expectations so that
i could be re-surprised and that i still get a lot from I&W, though i
have been listening VERY close and often to it since 1992!)

If this Jens guy as Gman put it so quaintly is Jens Johannsen formerly
of Yngwie and Dio, I heartily congratulate him and cannot wait to hear
what the guys come up with. This is too good to be true. Kevin was
great, but Jens would add so much more mystery to their sound! I
can't wait, and also hope Kevin's next project goes as far as DT did
and will.

Ok, from what someone said, this Jens guy is supposedly on this list??
If so, can he confirm this? I'd like some confirmation if possible. I
find this too hard to believe.

There seems to be a lot of conversation about Jens Johansson
being on Usenet and this list. Yeah, sure, I know there
have been posts sent with that name on the header. Of course,
it may very well be him fooling around the net, but... not
too long ago we had a post from Mr. Mike Portnoy on the list....
I'd also strongly suggest that you all read the chapter
"Celebrities Arriving on the Net" on "Zen and the Art of
Internet." ;)

Oppps! You're right, August 8th is the correct date. I biffed.

I never noticed either, though I was brought into progressive
guitar groups late... around the time of Vai's Passion and Warfare, and
Satriani's Flying in a Blue Dream. When I saw Jens posting to the list,
and noticed he was in my own FAQ, I began to wonder! :)

DT front office...

The Ytsejam list was brought to their attention by a friend of a
friend of this guy who knows another and his cousin... and so on. Most
recently, Mike Portnoy was seen at a concert in Cal and one of our
members mentioned the new stuff to him, and he asked how we knew it all.
Just recently, the people in DT who HAD been giving us information
THROUGH other sources, such as Mike Burstin and the list managers, began
posting to the list itself. C-Man (buffalo@panix.com) and Jens (address
withheld to prevent mail flooding) are currently listening in. We're
actually quite lucky, since few bands take this kind of interest in their
folks. On a similar note, over on Rush's TNMS, the three list mgr's are
in contact with Rush's management by phone, and pass the info on.
> Was Jens a connection to DT before this all happened, or just recently.
He's been here for a while, just not as a member of DT
(obviously.) :)

Message-ID: <"2764 Fri Aug 12 14:58:46 1994"@bnr.ca>
I've heard some of what Jens has done with Yngwie (who I'm not a big fan of-
all chops and no songwriting), and it's undeniable that his chops are
excellent. And I also realize that he is his own man and will not sound like
Kevin Moore, which I don't expect (or want). But I have a few concerns:
1) Can he write songs? Kevin was an excellent songwriter, both musically and
lyrically. I don't know of any songs Jens has written and don't know if he
writes lyrics. If he can't, John will have to shoulder most of the lyric
burden, unless the rest of the band also helps.
2) Is he too classically oriented? The neo-classical metal style that Yngwie
played is cliched nowadays. Jens' leads were very classically influenced.
I'd hate to see DT become too neoclassical. On I&W, Kevin outgrew the cliched
neo-classical style. He became especially adept at pitch bending, which
gave DT a jazzy feel at times. Can Jens bring something new (and not too
neo-classical) to the band?
3) Is picking up Jens just a temporary fix? Since the album is coming out,
DT obviously needs a keyboardist soon for touring purposes. Is Jens going
to be with DT for just the tour? If he does intend to do more, how long will
that last? A lot of the time when a big name joins a band, it is only a
matter of time before he wants to do his own thing and leaves the band a year
later to do other projects.
These are just honest questions and are not meant to anger any Jens fans.

I recently had a chat with Jens Johansson and he gave me some news...
He's been contacted by Dream Theater, he hasn't actually joined Dream Theater.
Kevin Moore has definitely left Dream Theater.
He's going to meet and jam with them this coming Tuesday, the 16th of
August, according to him. He's had to learn 6:00, Lifting Shadows off
a Dream, Surrounded, Learning to Live, just to name a few songs...
There are other contenders for keyboardist at this point.
At this point he would be "helping out on the tour" to quote him and might
become a permanent member eventually...
So there's some news... we'll know more next week!

OK, I've had just about enough of the rumours and counter-rumours
emanating from the person that posts from buffalo@panix.com.
1) Kevin has left DT. (I was as mystified as anyone.)
2) I may replace him. I liked DT a lot before this happened, am familiar
with the material, and have very similar influences. I haven't met with
the band yet as they're all on vacation. [It's not really a decision for
management to make in their absence.] Will meet/play with on Tuesday here
in NYC. Hopefully the personal/musical chemistry works out between
everybody. I did meet with James LaBrie briefly, and Kevin, strangely enough.
4) Lots of mail here lately. Haven't been able to reply to almost any of
it, bear with me, I've saved it offline and will try to get to it later.
Thanks for all the encouragement! :) I'll keep reading ytsejam and a.m.d-t
periodically in the days ahead in any event.
5) More details later (maybe).
Jens.

Forward from TOSCANO@SDSC.EDU follows.
Hello-
I just listened to Lie from the web for the first time, and I'd be
lying if I didn't say I'm dissappointed as hell. It's good metal, but
bad Dream Theater. It's definitely the most generic thing I've ever heard by
them. I listen to Dream Theater because they are progressive, not because
the have "balls and chunk." Any fucking punk who starts "playing" guitar
to rebel against Daddy or get laid more often can have balls and chunk.
I think that DT is the best band in existance right now, because they are
so innovative, and such good songwriters, and (up til now) so different
sounding. I do not know why they don't like being called "merely" a
progressive band. Do they want to consider themselves a metal band? I
do not consider them metal, and that is a compliment. Metal is great, but
it is very limited in scope compared to Dream Theater's music. They are
selling themselves short by calling themselves a metal band. I would consider
them strongly influenced by metal, but can you tell me that "Surrounded"
is the product of a heavy metal band? If so, we obviously disagree on
what defines metal. I am very fearful now that, having been succesfully
merketed as a metal band, they might go to great lengths to show that
they are a chest thumping, thrashing, balls and chunk metal band that can
compete with the best of them. Well that's not true. They are a progressive
band that doesn't need to compete with the best of them, because no other
band is even in the same league as DT.
As for KM's departure, my paranoid little theory as stated above
would tend to correspond with the specualtion here that KM left because
he didn't like the heavier, less progressive direction the band planned to
take in the future.
Thanks for letting me rant. Now before you flame, keep the following
things in mind:
-I do like Lie. It is a good song. It's just not on par with DT's
creative abilities, as I see them.
-This is all speculation based on one song. I hope to god none of it's
true, but I am fearful and angst ridden and wanted to express myself here
on ytsejam. Let's hope the new album as a whole proves me to be a
paranoid musical elitist.

i think Jens is for real. a friend (who is a huge Yngwie fan) told me
that Jens once said something to the effect that if he wasn't playing
with Yngwie, he would have been back in Sweeden selling computers.
Now i don't know the exact comment, or if it's even true, but i

is an internet user.
Welcome Jens (I hope you DO end up joining DT).

i forwarded Jens' original message to a friend who is a huge

but as Jesn requested please don't flood his mailbox with mail.
his '.plan' should tell you most of what you would want to know.
from shinyash@sfu.ca
wow! cool!!!!!
i fingered Jens and his .plan and .project tell it all!
cool! incidentally, he is on the same commercial network as was
an actress from my favourite soap. (i even exchanged some email with her)
but now i will someday come into contact with Jens Johanssen! that
dude has been a total idol of mine for years!
Here is his .plan and .project!!!
Project: Er, avoiding creditors and learning a few Dream Theater songs.^M
Plan:^M
**************************************************************************^M
^M
Congratulations (?), you have fingered jens@panix.com (Jens Johansson)!^M
^M
Here's a Jens Johansson FAQ for your troubles... I've been deluged with^M
^mail since I got my account here at panix so hopefully this can save us^M
both some typing! :) (No, I don't mind getting mail, I just hate^M
answering the same old questions!) ;)^M
^M
-------^M
^M
^M
Q: What are you up to at the moment?^M
A: Look at the ~/.project file, it will be updated now and then.^M
^M
Q: What have you been doing since 1987?^M
A: I moved to New York City (from Los Angeles) in 1988 to settle down^M
with a girl. Left Yngwie's band in '89 after hearing the mix on the^M
Leningrad album - also, the record company (PolyGram) lost interest and^M
the money situation started to suck onions. (I essentially got sick of^M
the whole mess, it was time to move on -- a.k.a. "Musical Differences")^M
Joined Ronnie Dio's band DIO in 89. Did one album with them, and a tour^M
which incidentally Yngwie opened on. I've done other more mainstream^M
studio work. I've worked a lot with Jonas Hellborg (he's a great Swedish^M
bass player thart used to play with the Mahavishnu Orchestra) on^M
avant-garde records, some on his label, Day Eight. Been touring the^M
jazz/club circuit in Europe a lot with this kind of stuff. (It's a lot^M
of fun.) Recorded a very strange solo album. Recently finished a^M
made-for-Japan "band" album with a bunch of ex-Yngwie guys and some^M
other Swedes. (I go back to Sweden a lot to work on stuff.)^M
^M
Q: Do you still do studio work? Producing? Engineering? Drinking?^M
A: Sure! Any reasonable suggestions will be considered carefully.^M
^M
Q: What recent records would you recommend?^M
A: At this point I'd really recommend "The Johansson Brothers" -- the^M
made-for-Japan one. But it doesn't have US licensing yet though, you'd
have to find an imported one. It's out in Scandinavia and Japan. Be
warned, it's slightly poppy at times, but it also has three really
complex instrumentals. (the longest one is over 10 minutes) Another one
I quite like is the "E" album with "The Jonas Hellborg Group Featuring
Anders & Jens Johansson" that came out the fall of 93. (Distributed by
Celluloid/Music Sales here in the US.) The latter got a great write-up
in Keyboard Magazine (March/94).. sample quote: "Johansson has the right
combination of aggression, imagination, and command to shine in this
setting. Nothing trips him up..." -- and it gets even better. :) :) The
Ginger Baker one is kinda nice too, a little laid back though. (That's a
Day Eight/Celluloid/Music Sales job also.)
Q: How was Malmsteen to work with?
A: No problem for me there.. he's a stubborn guy though, and can be
quite blunt. He earned his bad reputation the hard way (by being truly
offensive), and he's very proud of the fact. Still one of the best guitar
players on the planet. I talk to him all the time... he's doing good,
just got married again and has a new record out. ("The Seventh Seal",
distributed by CMC in the US.)
Q: Lastly, how about a discography?
A: Here's all I can think of right now... Silver Mountain: Shakin'
Brains (RoadRunner/83); Rising Force (all on PolyGram): Yngwie J.
Malmsteen's Rising Force (84), Studio/Live-85 (85 (obviosly!)), Marching
Out (85), Trilogy (86), Odyssey (88), and Live In Leningrad (89) [Also
two feature length concert videos and three MTV-style videos]; Erik
Borelius: Perfect Partners (EMI/87); DIO: Lock Up The Wolves (Warner
Bros./90) [plus two MTV-style videos]; Jens Johansson: Fjaderlosa
Tvafotingar (Amigo/91); DEADLINE: Dissident (Day Eight Music/91)
[featuring Bill Laswell, Bootsy Collins, Jonas Hellborg, Ayib Dieng, and
