I don't know about the rest of you, but this line gave me a
shiver. I know they're all just people like the rest of us peons
*grin* but it's still strange to read Jens (I figure that, like
most e-mailing lists, this one is casual enough to be on a first-name
basis. Isn't the 'net great! :-)) say that. Normally things like
band-member replacements are totally over the heads of the fans. Like
when Metallica picked Jason Newstead in '86 there was an announcement
of auditions, then an announcement that they'd chosen Jason. To see
"I may replace him" from the guy who I hope does, makes me feel a bit
more in the process, so to speak. I know that sounds strange, but
it's a hard thing to express. Anyone else agree?

As a fan and a musician, thank you for caring. So many
musicians don't, it's a nice change to find some that do. BTW: Let's
get the rest of DT on e-mail! :-)

Now, those of you who are worried about Jens stepping in for
Kevin, don't. Just go out and buy any of Yngwie Malmsteen's older
albums and prepare to be amazed. There is no loss of talent here. As
a keyboardist myself I think that Jens and Kevin are two of the best
(if not the best) I've ever heard.
For those of you complaining - shut up already! Kevin is
leaving. Whining won't help anything, all it'll do is piss off a lot
of the readers of this list and maybe even cause them to unsubscribe.
Like your mommy (should have) told you: If you have nothing
constructive to say, then don't say anything at all. :-) If you want
to talk about other keyboardists you think would fit well into the
band, then by all means - bring them up. Personally, I can think of
no one more suited than Jens, but that's just my opinion.
Lastly, I would like to add another "Don't flood Jens' e-mail
mailbox" message here. I talked to Dave Barry a couple months ago
when he came here to speak at the University of Virginia and he said
that one thing he doesn't like about e-mail is that people send him
things that way that they would _never_ send via regular mail. Think
of it this way: If you wouldn't send it snail-mail, don't send it
e-mail.
Ok, 'nuff for now. I still need to recover frmo this past
weekend. I won't get the mud out of my belongings for months. Then
again, what would Woodstock be without mud. :-)

They just played 'LIE' on the radio here. They even admitted that they
weren't supposed to be doing it!! They featured it on something called
'Smash or Trash', which is a deal where you call in and vote on if the song
is a smash or if it should be trashed.
The song was a 'smash' by a 9 to 1 vote. It sounded awesome on the radio.
Can't wait to hear more. I called the station and after voting I asked them
if they knew about Kevin leaving and they already did somehow. They didn't
even know who was producing the album or what it was called though. Kinda
weird.

Mike Portnoy said that 13 tracks were recorded for _Awake_, and 11 of
those were actually included on the album. He also made the inference
that the remaining two pieces would possibly appear as B-sides later on.
Are those two songs "To Live Forever" and "Eve", or are they completely
new songs? "Forever" is definitely my favorite song, and "Eve" is right up
there as well, and I would really enjoy a studio version of these tunes,
as James blows it on all three live versions that I have, and the sound
quality is not great.

This may be debatable, as it modulates all over the place, but
IMHO, it seems to center around C#m (4 sharps).
It sounds pretty cool when matched with "Pup" in F# (at least
that's what I think it's in...)

Alas, "To Live Forever", "Eve", and "A Change of Season" have
nothing to do with DT's new album. Mike mentioned in an interview that
they had piles of material written, and they wanted to go with the new
stuff. Have you heard the fantastic studio acoustic "Forever"? It will
definitely be in there when I make a Dream Theater montage... though in
all honesty, Mike Burstin could make a better one.
Speaking of which, ALL THOSE WHO ORDERED RUSH VIDEO MONTAGES!!
I have received more orders then I could ever have hoped for, and
I'm starting to wonder where all you guys are coming from! :) I'm
constantly making tapes and shipping them out and yet I still fall
further and further behind, and the 50 tape limit has already been
reached and passed. All those of you whose orders I received postmarked
before tomorrow, August 16th, I will accept at $6.00 per order, even
though I'm expecting it to thus apply to the first 75 or so tapes. But I
found out I was running VERY close to cost on the $6.00 per order, and in
order to be able to send all the tapes faster (priority mail) and getall
the orders done on time, the current price will be $8.00.
To those of you who have already sent me checks! I don't cash
them until I go to copy YOUR tape, so if it's cleared your account, I've
already made and/or sent and/or am waiting to send your tape. If it has
NOT cleared, I havent gotten to it yet and will do so ASAP, so please be
patient! Sorry for falling behind, but "I'm fighting the weight of the
world, no one can save me this time..." hehe It's just mayhem here folks.
I throw in a tape as I'm going to work and to bed, and usually get about
2 or 3 done when I'm just home doing my thing, so at the rate of 5 a day
I will have cleared my current queue in a week, just in time for a week
worth of orders to come in the mail! :)
If you haven't ordered yet, as I said earlier this week, delaying
won't lose you anything at this point, and you may have less of a wait
between the time you send your check and the time you get your tape. I'll
follow this up with a general informative posting about the Rush Video
Monatage for all Ytsejammers who missed it the 1st time.

It really is a damn shame. I really wanted to meet Kevin as well. Now I guess I'll have
to wait till he starts a solo project, and brings it to the UK (3 years time if I'm
lucky?!:) Well, good luck to Jens, here's hoping todays jam went well for all involved.
What with the "Petrucci at clinic..." debate that was raging last week, I've been
wondering just why I like DT so much. I've come to the conclusion that it's NOT that
they're god-like musicians. In my oppinion, they aren't. There's no denying that they're
very competent musicians that know their instruments well, but I think there are those
that are equally competent that aren't so well known, some probably not even know at all
to the punters like you and me. For me, the real thrill of DT is in the writing. I can
believe that Petrucci (and some of the others) are not that good at improvising, but
they can certainly write stuff that blends extrememly well and flows throughout, and they
use what skills they have to write licks and runs that they can play to perfection.
Since it's the pieces themselves that do it for me, and not so much the performances,
I'll be interested to see what effect the new keyboardist has on procedings.

This is going to be a very strange question, but my girlfiend
was reading over my shoulder just now and when she saw the name
"Petrucci" her first thought was not of DT but of another band. (Don't
worry, I've introduced her to DT, but she doesn't know them by name
yet.) Anyway, she's a big 80's music buff and her first thought was of
the drummer from the band Vixen: Roxy Petrucci. Anyone know if
there's a relation? Karin is dying to know, and I think it'd be
pretty funny if there were.

And I'm 100% certain that Petrucci is a good improviser too.
A great lot of those who join those clinics are there just to trade licks
and jam together (IMPROVISING!).
