Maybe someone who is well-rounded and can do it all: write good songs,
pull off tough parts using difficult chops, IMPROVISE . . .

    > And I'm 100% certain that Petrucci is a good improviser too.

Don't elaborate or anything. What makes you 100% certain? Have you seen
him improvise? I ask again, were you at the clinic in question?

    > A great lot of those who join those clinics are there just to trade licks
    > and jam together (IMPROVISING!).

How do you join a clinic? It's not a club. Usually, it entails watching
a guest artist teach some aspect of guitar playing. I don't understand
the nature of this statement concerning people "joining clinics."

    > So thats just bull.

Oh gee, what an intelligent response. I'm SO impressed. He sure swayed
me. How about the rest of you guys? Where'd you learn to capitalize and
    punctuate like that, anyway?

Jeez, it seems discussion of Petrucci's improv ability really strikes a
nerve with many list members. It's OK. I agree with many of you when you
mention that there are lots of guys out there who are good players who
don't improvise that well. I'd list Petrucci as one of them. Hell yeah,
he's a very good player who's put the time in, and now he can shred. Who
do I think the best improvisors are? Jazz musicians. Listen to Coltrane,
Miles, etc., or for guitar, how about Wes Montgomery, John Scofield, Scott
Henderson, George Benson? The ability to play over changes that you don't
know beforehand, to me, is one of the marks of a great musician. If you
don't believe me, try it and see 1) if you can even do it at all, and 2)
if you can make it sound like music. THEN we'll talk.

SDV is not an instrumental... They just don't have them yet... SDV
was one of Kevin's own personal demo. Now, speaking of Kevin, and
some of the stuff that had been said... First off, for the person who
wondered if Kevin was maybe doing some more Christian type musci... (I
don't know the exact wording... you know what I mean...) Well, from
the demo that _someone_ has that Kevin did (nope, I don't have them
and don't think that anyone else ever will... :( ) in the 3 songs, he
does say "fuck" a few times... I don't think that a Christian song
    would say fuck... :)

Where was that??? Did they say where they got the copy from??? (I

No, its very doubltful... who was the singer and why did he produce these demos anyway? I'm glad he doesn't write lyrics like that for DT songs.

Thats cool... but its also coming from a bunch of metal heads. heh.. we're all, of course, intellectual though, right? :) But if that gives any indication of how well the CD will do... man DT will really rack in the dough. I mean, you know, the people who like pop will have something probably, the people who like metal will have something, the people who likes progressive will have something. Like Portnoy said, it'll be a CD that everyone will enjoy. (Except my mom... he probably will hate it like she does right now. heh)

    >>Am I correct in my assumption that Space Dye Vest is an instrumental >>piece? I noticed that no lyrics were posted for it. Were the lyrics >>forgotten, or was it ommitted because it has none?

Yes, Space Dye Vest is an instrumental tune. It bigins with very beautiful Piano sound, and the latter half, heavy guitar joins. This tune written by Kevin. The very heartbreaking experence inspired him and he wrote this tune. (One day Kev looked at a catalog of clothes, and he fell in love with the model wearing a vest called "Space Dye Vest" suddenly. He knew nothing about her, but he couldn't foget her... He wondered and found the reason. His lover has just forsaken him, and he was in pain because he gave not enough affection to her. He didn't know how to give vent to his feeling, and wanted to give his affection to anyone. This painfully feeling maked him writing this tune.) Hearing his comment about this tune, I was close to tears... Perhaps we can feel his sad emotion without any lyrics.

This is very personal tune, I think. I wonder DT play it after Kevin left... I want to listen to all of AWAKE as soon as possible!!!

I recieved some mails from subscribers of this list, about tape trading. Would you like to give me any time to reply? I'm afraid the unfortunate leaks/rumours regarding me being Kevin Moore's replacement in Dream Theater have made this brief statement neccessary.

I played with them on Tuesday evening, and it went well. Unfortunately, for the time being, they have decided to go with a guy named Jordan Rudess. He'll at least do the Foundations gig with them in a 'sideman' type capacity. As far as I could tell that's what they wanted for now, ie: not a full member, rather: a replacement to do the tour. And it seems it's not decided that Jordan will do the tour, they want to try out other people, and I suspect it'll probably take some time.

Anyway, I played 'Learning to live', '6:00', 'Lifting shadows off a dream', and 'Pull me under'. Portnoy actually made a DAT -- of which I'm sure you all will have CD copies by the end of the month. :) They played 'PMU' and 'Take the time' with Jordan. Jordan is supposedly also a good player, although I've never heard him.

This whole affair was actually pretty surreal from the start; Kevin leving (?), the band off on vacation(!) for two weeks, Jordan 'not even being a contender' and my actually being offered the job of doing the Foundations gig (even shook hands on it with one of the managers), finding out later that wasn't the case, and then these leaks..

As for Kevin, I met him briefly on July 31st, a day before he drove off in his old 60:s behemoth of a car. I quite liked him as a person actually. In his own words he was "just going to point the car toward west and drive." He seemed sad somehow, I don't know him that well at all so it was hard to figure out what was going on. He apparently hadn't been present at the mixing, I had 'Space dye vest' on a cassette and he almost didn't want to hear it.. I guess he was worried about what it would sound like. And for whatever it's worth, I think the world of his writing and playing, and it's going to be interesting to see what he's going to come up with. I heard some material very briefly in the management office, stuff that "didn't end up on Awake", and it was excellent. Hard to describe, very emotional. I hope he arrives safely in Boulder, CO, finds a house, and goes right to work on a new record.

As for Dream Theater I guess they'll tour in support of "Awake" the next year or so. My only gripe: The way the leaks were handled certainly left a lot to be desired.

As for me, after this little snag it's back to plan A: a little trip to Sweden to edit my new solo piano record and write and record more "Johansson Brothers" material. Possibly we'll try to squeeze in another Hellborg record too, all though he may have gone to China (!) before I get there.

And by now I realize this 'brief statement' is anything but brief. :) Anyway, too bad this didn't happen, I know it in my heart: it would have sounded great.

Who's whining? Who's complaining? People may be 'lamenting' the fact that Kevin is leaving, but that's far from whining. Besides, Why shouldn't I be a bit upset that Kevin is leaving. He's my favorite in the band. I've seen too many bands lose their chemistry after a member leaves and (Jens' considerable talents notwithstanding) it's cause for a little worry. I hope DT doesn't lose a beat on this one and I'm anxious to hear something with a new keyboardist.

This is MAJOR news and people are gonna have strong feelings about it. Let them post!

OKay, finally have a chance to speak up about this stuff...

First of all, thanks, Jens, for all the information and everything. It's really cool to have insight on this stuff from your perspective, and from what I've heard of your stuff, I'm kinda disappointed that they decided to go with the other guy...although he must be damn good, too, if they expect him to play Kev's parts...

Overall, I'm really kind of depressed about the situation...Kevin is, like, my hero and stuff, and it's going to feel really wierd being at a DT concert and looking over to the left of the stage and seeing someone else at the keys...It also kind of bothers me that Kevin seems kind of sad about things (and from what I'm hearing it seems like it might be something of more of a personal than a musical nature.) I hope he's doing okay. And I can't wait to hear Awake, and then whatever Kevin comes up with on his own.

A couple things I've been wondering...Does Kevin still have a contract with Atlantic? It'd kinda suck if he left one of the greatest bands ever for artistic reasons and then, like, starved. Also, does he plan on starting a new band or just going it alone? Any information on this kinda thing would be appreciated.

Finally, one question for Jens...I've heard some of your stuff with Yngwie, and it's awesome...but I'd rather hear something of yours with less of a Malmsteen influence...care to recommend anything in particular?
