Well I've heard that 82 mins is now possible due to greater packing
density but I've not seen more than 79 (and that was an old one).
The Japanese version of Extreme's '3 sides' had a bonus track as a CD
single because the album was too long. There was a bonus CD single with
the Van Halen Right Here Right now live album and there was a bonus
4 TRACK full size CD with the excellent Anthrax Sound of White Noise
(they shouldn't have bothered with the Thin Lizzy!).
It can be done ... but the release date for Japanese Awake is the 10th.
We have to wait a few more days, or buy the import.
Martin.

I've been wondering where I heard the name Jordan Rudes since Jens
posted, and when someone said Vinnie Moore's Time Odyssey, I remembered.
That's our man. I didn't find that album particularly exciting, so I didn't
listen to it a great deal, but it has its moments. Let's just bare
in mind that it was released in '88 or '89, if memory serves me, and thus
there is no telling what he sounds like today. Thanks for the tip--I would
still be pulling out my hair wondering where I heard the name before if you
hadn't posted.

WANTED - Any bootlegs, singles of DT or Majesty demos or whatever
(preferably original copies)... Because of what you might say I'm
geographically challenged (I live in Australia) the closest I will
ever get to hear or see DT live is by bootlegs and the like... LATM
and the Images and Words Video are just not enough of this great
band... After rummaging through the ftp> sites I was surprised at the
amount of material that I haven't even heard of before... So please
if you know where I can get anything e-mail me on
s920522@fs2.ballarat.edu.au I am of course willing to pay but do not
want to be ripped off... We seem to get a lot more releases of singles
and the like here (maybe because bands know they won't come hear),
except of DT, so swapping for other material would be feasible
also... In the meantime I just have to wait foe AWAKE (which won't be
here for a while yet)...

About the CD having more than 75 mins... the suppose extra track is not
possible... higher track density means you can't play it on every CD
player...

Anyone else hear it?

There is a Jordan Rudes playing keyboards on that CD. I'm assuming it's the same guy. Rudes also has a solo album that I hear is pretty good. I think it might have even won an award is the most recent reader's poll in Keyboard magazine (I forget which one).

Be warned no DT content here- purely FW... I *just* got IO (better late than never)... The store I ordered it through took *far* too long... OK, OK, Im done whining. :)
First, a question. ANyone out there know if Metalblade/Priority is a true indie? If not, who is their big 6 sponsor (and why are they being so hush hush about their sponsorship?) Is the FW type of 'sound' typical of Metalblade, or do they have a more diverse catalog? Finally, are they very open to taking on new acts (some indies are *really* touchy about taking on new bands). My band waffles between DT, FW, and QR sound (With quite a bit of ourselves thrown in for good measure!) :) and we are at the point where we are 'label shopping'... Anyone with experience in this area- tips, hints, suggestions are all welcome... ;)
IO observations: (as if you lucky people havent heard enough of these already!) :) On the first listen I *really* liked it. (whining alert!)I have trouble understanding (this is *not* a flame- just IMHO) where the folks that say 'FW has some songs with potential, but they don't carry them far enough to be good' are coming from. Although I am coming from the standpoint that I don't like their harder stuff as well- and I can see where those into the harder FW might see differently... (finished whining!) I don't have any favorites yet, but I am really liking things so far. FW has the coolest grasp of the 'hook'... virtually every song has at least one cool hook in it (IMHO, of course). I would have to say thst this is their best album yet... followed in a very close second by Parallels. Anyway, I have rambled on enogh to put y'all to sleep, so I will take my leave for now! BTW... regarding the picture (in the field) in the center of the IO booklet... is it just me or has Mark gained weight? Opinions on the 'bearded look' by Jim and Joe? Personally, I liked the 'clean' look- just me perhaps... :) Jeff Lanctot is: University of Washington pandora@u.washington.edu __ __ __ __ Seattle, WA / \ / \ / \ / \ _______________________ / __\/ __\/ __\/ __\________________________ _______________________/ /__/ /__/ /__/ /___________________________ | / \ / \ / \ / \ \ VOICE:(206)633-5804 The opinions expresed |/ \_/ \_/ \_/ \ \____ here are my own- go \ o \ steal yours from \_____/--< someone else. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. Very slim indeed.

I'm certain he'll do great. I think he has found what he was looking for, and that he'll reach for it.

He actually _did_ listen to it and smiled and said he thought it sounded OK.

Prepare yourselves for the onslaught -- at the now infamous clinic (the Clinic of Doom; Doom's Clinic; it told my Lord the way to . . . oh, sorry, too much Conan) Petrucci was also sporting this "bearded look." I believe we need to start a newsgroup in honor of this --something like alt.music.progressive.metal.fashions perhaps?

I wrote about an interview of DT broadcasted in Japan on YTSEJAM Digiest 482. I just heard the interview. That's all. ...OK, I'll explain again. DT is very loved by Japanese rock fans.(I guess you know it for Live in Tokyo video. Please don't think I favor Japanese too much because I'm Japanese!) To release their new album is big news among Japanese rock fans, and DT knows it. Their management invited a Japanese D.J. to the recording studio on 31st July, and he listened to just completed AWAKE. He also met members(James, Kevin, and John M)and did the interview. The interview was broadcasted on 4th Aug in Japan, and I heard it. Kevin HIMSELF talked about Space Dye Vest and 6:00. (I can't write down in English! If I can, I would do! Supposing you doubt it, please notice me your address. I will send you a copy of the interview tape.) There were only interview and I didn't heard any track of AWAKE, but the D.J. talked about AWAKE he listened to. So I knew that SDV is an instrumental tune.
I can't express my feeling well...follows are quotation from my mail sent to a person on Ytsejam. All I want to say is in follow quatation from the mail.
//I guess there are some information about DT that people living out in Japan don't know...(for example, I read DT FAQ and it seems noone knows what Another Day about....)But there are some information we Japanese can't get in Japan. (for example, still noone in Japan knows Kev's leaving) We can get each information through Ytsejam, I think. I will supply all information I know to Ytsejam!//
If someone didn't like my postings, I apologize for it, but I can't grudged information about DT that I get. Because it seems there are no posting from Japan on Ytsejam.

I'm wondering it, too. But the people in Eastwest Japan said that there is a bonus track in Japanese version of AWAKE... The advertisement of AWAKE also tells it. Now I'm inquiering into it. *********************************************************************** * " If spirit's a sign, then it's only a matter of time. just got back from Z-rock, it is nice to have friends in high places...
got the LIE promo cd, i have listened to the song about 5 songs, it needs to grow on me i guess. very good production, and the guitar tone at times sounds like king's x (also got a promo-only king's x cd from zrock today with 2 live songs!)
here are the lowdowns:
still has the images: dream theater, words: moore type of crediting..
number is PRCD 5807-2, the station alos has 5807-1, which is the plain white one (mine is the cool digipack) but they needed it to play on the radio. they said they could not play it til the week of the 22nd.
the cover is awesome, i hope this is the cover of AWAKE, i love it, it is kinda a combination of an eye in the middle of a clock face, with the majesty logo barely visible in the dark pupil of the eye (tiny) and the whole thing is floating in a cloud-filled sky. the back is bubble traces from a particle accelerator.
one thing that stands out to me, there are two pictures of the band, and in both kevin is the guy farthest in back, and in one he looks pissed, and the other he is completely looking away from everything, looking like he is anxious to get out of there. petrucci looks weird with a goatee (well so do i, i guess)
the song really hasn't impressed me yet, really sounds non-progressive. more straight-ahead modern metal, almost reminds me of soundgarden and pantera. the guitar solo didn't even impress me. i thought john p had grown out of tapping. oh well. looks like he discovered wah pedals also.
hopefully it will grow on me, i am gonna listen to it continuously the whole way to houston today (4 hours) so that is around 50 times.
later...

A MP2 file is one recorded with MPEG compression... I don't know what you need to play it, though... I am hoping you need just a plain sound card, but I am not sure... you might need one that has a MPEG chip on it... Anyone out there know? (if you do, will a Soundblaster 16 ASP run, and where can I FTP it???) I might play around at a few FTP sites to find a player...

Yes, Mike P said on the radio show in LA that they do have more tracks than there is room for on a CD... I don't know where we will be able to get them... possibly an EP, or maybe B-Sides...

I am at work now so I can't verify the name of the keyboardist, but I can tell you from memory that he is very good. He really adds a lot to the guitar-oriented music, in a manner similar to KM. He adds almost a new-age sort of feel to some of the songs. One question- I think I missed the original message - why is someone asking about Vinnie Moore's keyboardist?
