Hey all... I recently joined the mailing list but have been listen to DT
since the beginning of summer. First of all, I must say, this is a kick
ass band, the best. My favorite. :)

Secondly, I would like to ask a few questions about DT.

    1) What key signature is Take the Time in?

    2) Does anyone know what Under a Glass Moon is about? I've studied these
lyrics and can't fathom any sense from them at all. :)

    3) I only have IAW and LatM. I want to get WDADU, but I can't find it in
any of the music stores around here. :( I'd like to know a few things
about it first though. My friend has it (I've listened to Ytsejam) and he
says that the music on it is more techincal than on IAW but I've heard
the singer is below James. Can anyone comment on this? Like, which do you
guys like better? I personally feel LeBrie is a very execellent singer
(cept on his screamin in the Killing Hand on LatM... :))

    4) A lot of people on here have been saying that KM is leaving because DT
is getting heavier. If that is the case, then why did KM write the lyrics
to PMU (heaviest on IAW) and Lie (obviously the heaviest on Awake)? I
mean if he didn't the band to get heavier, than he wouldn't have written
the lyrics on the pieces. I think that Kev is a very diverse song writer
and composer personally. I'm not sure WHAT he'll be doing in the future
(heh, maybe he'll make a progressive Christian band. THAT'D be interesting.)

    5) I know this has nothing to do with DT, but which Rush album do you all
consiter to be the best? :) I've just been introduced to them and would
like to get a kick ass album to hold me over until Awake. I'm listening
to Chronicals right now and I'm very impressed. I'm just wondering if
there is an even better ablum of theirs.

    Thanks all,

    William

P.S. Welcome to DT Jens, from what I've heard about you, I think I'll be
one of your CDs. You sound like an excellent technical player which I
like and appricate very much. Heh... which can you recommend to me? :)
Also, I can't WAIT for the September IRC with DT! That will kick ass.

Hi, all. I just want someone who has heard a few more songs on _Awake_ to
tell me that DT's direction on the new album isn't reflected in the demo
version of the song "Caught in a Web". Although It is really heavy and
everything, I'm not sure I know how to listen to it yet. I was really
hoping that DT would simply evolve their style another notch instead of
taking a "new direction". This is coming from someone who's favorite DT
moments are the "Beneath a summer sky, Under glass moon light" part of
UaGM, and the dreamy keyboard solo in "Light Fuse". I really had my hopes
up that DT would surprise everyone by doing more music in the vein of my
two examples. Someone tell me what it sounds like on the new one.
As for Jens, I've been terrified by his awesome solos, but
haven't heard one second of his songwriting. I hope he doesn't present a
Euro-metal element to the music. He does an incredible job of adding
moodiness and atmosphere to the Dio album _Lock Up the Wolves_, for
anyone who doesn't have it yet. He and Rowan Robertson made that album
    great, in my opinion.
I'm also a little apprehensive aout LaBrie's "new" singing style. I
love his vocals on I&W because no other singers that sing over heavy
riffs like that ones in PMU sing with such a nice clear un-garbled voice.
That made DT even more unique. On that demo I have of CiaW, he almost
sounds like Mike Vescera (Loudness, new Yngwie).
I'm also confused by the new lyrics, in the same way I was with I&W
lyrics. Anyone want to start discussing? How about some inside info, Jens!
I was also looking forward to some Lydian Dominant music on _Awake_.
I liked Alex Skolnick's solos on Testament _The Ritual_ so much, as well
as Petrucci on UaGM and Metropolis. It's a cool and eerie, spacey
sounding scale that added a new dimension to DT.
Anyway, sorry so long. In a nutshell, I just want someone to tell us
about the new DT and reassure us that DT didn't take a turn for the
trendy on the whole album by playing all atonal riffs in low C# as in
some of the sections in CiaW.

I'm still confused...But I will be able to comment about Kev's
leaving before long. He gave me a great influences, so I was very shocked
...no more than that. Now I 'm just trying not to think .....
Anyone knows what he want to do after leaving DT? I'll follow him.

Jens, I'm thank you for your mailing Ytsejam. I'm one of big fan of
yours, and I'm looking foward to your work with DT. Your album with Anders,
"the Johansson brothers" was very amazing. I and my friends were very glad
hearing it, and for your coming back. I hope to see you in Japan with DT!

I'd like to do tape trading with people on Ytsejam, too. I have
some live tape in Japan, and so on ... plese send me e-mail(in English
without difficulty). Excuse me borrowing your paragraph, Jason.

    >>Hi all - I've seen a few mentions that DT is going to play at the
    >>"Foundation Forum" in Burbank.
Oh, it's really? I want to know details. And does anyone know when
Awake tour begin? I'm going to go to U.S.A. to see the show, when tour will
begin. I can't wait any longer!

KAI, thank you for imformation. I will write a letter to DT office
at once. But it takes a week to reach a letter from Japan... Oh, if I were
    an American.....
Because of I'm ordinary Japanese, I guess my English include many
mistakes....Perdon me as this matter.Though language is different, my
affection for Dream Theater is same as yours, I think!

Does anyone here know for sure if the rumor about John Petrucci using
Ibanez Universe 7-string guitars on _Awake_ is true? The music that I
have heard sounded like a detuned 6-string...

Well, I am collecting all known tracks from Awake so far... We do
    already know of 3 tracks...

There is, of course, Lie... Which... I guess as someone pointed out
before... its a good metal song... but just not up do DT's par...
However, for those of you who have already heard Caught In A Web from
me (or anyone that I sent the tape to) know that it is, IMO, a much
    better song...
Those are, as stated by Mike P, the heaviest tracks on Awake... If
you have heard Silent Man, from the Providence accoustic show, you
know that it is FAR from heavy... possibly even _more_ mellow than
WFS or Surrounded... even though that version is only done w/ an
accoustic guitar... the real version should be similar....

(Hey... I have been wondering the same things that everyone has... I
know that I&W was the best CD in my collection... and I have been
worrying about if they can possibly come up with something better...
Who knows... we shall find out... )

    Forward from GARION@BUD.INDIRECT.COM follows.

You mentioned that Kevin Moore might want toform a progressive Christian band... and it struck me... Could THIS be the musical difference? Could Kevin, easily the only highly spiritual member of the band, have wanted to get more "religious" in his music, only to find the others more excited in his secular lyrical efforts? I can't say I'd blame him for moving on since I know religion can be a very strong force in a person's life. King's X is more spiritual and has no keyboardist, so who knows.

Same here... :) I hope very much that they won't go all heavy... a few heavier songs might be nice (and put them in the lime light with heavy metal fans) but I would love to have Metropolis Part 2 instead of Lie... Lie is OK... but oh well.. I'll resereve final judgement when I heard it on the CD, I've only heard a 1 meg sample of it and I haven't heard Web yet. LeBrie definetly sounds different on Lie, well.... its sounds like he's talking, not singing... but then he stars to sing and it sounds like him again, sort of. :) like I said, I had a very low quality 1 meg sample. Uhmm, could you reply back to this message even if you have nothing to say? :) I'm trying to see if this is getting out. I'm not sure if it is.

Well... Jens will know (on Tuesday) when he meets and jams with the band whether some of the new stuff is heavy or not and maybe he'll let us know.

And if so, maybe they'll tell him WHY they're doing this. :) Petrucci said he formed DT with Myung, Portnoy, and Moore because they all liked progressive music and were excellent musicians... I can't see them throwing all the musical talent and abilty away just for money and fame.

What's this about The Silent Man performed in Providence? Anybody else heard about this? Also, I'd hate to think the Lie is not as good as CiaW! I've only heard CiaW, which I think is an awesome song (I'm sure it will be better on the album, also). I like the vocal melodies over the verse sections a lot. All I can say about people not liking the new stuff is that you should give it a chance. When I first heard I&W, I thought it was pretty cool stuff, they were tight, the production was nice, etc.. But, after a few weeks or so, I just hated it, it didn't make sense to me. Thank goodness I came to my senses. I think it's just a matter of listening to the music enough to understand all the weird musical changes that DT does.
