A 40 minute EP? Sounds great, especially for someone who hasn't heard ACoS
yet, but hey, 2 or 3 years ago, 40 minutes was enough for most people to
consider it a full album. And at 40 minutes, it's almost twice as long as
the first few Van Halen albums, right? :)

All right, I've sat here too long and have seen too much of it. How many
people got the promo packs and found them to duplicate items in your
collections? How the hell did people get "chosen" to receive these promo
packs anyway? I've been on Ytsejam for quite awhile now and have no memory
of any contest or offer. It gets a little old to see post after post of
people saying, "I got my promo pack!!! Now I have even more stickers than
before!!! I already have the CD's!!! I guess I'll give them away at
Christmas!!!" If it sounds like I'm a poor loser, you are right...I am.
Where I live you have to donate organs to get decent imports and that's
for Pearl Jam. Forget Dream Theater. I only own four DT items: I&W, AWAKE,
LiT and a promo copy of AWAKE. I got the promo from my university's radio
station. Why it was sent to them, I don't know. It is a public radio
station. This reminds me of the King's X sampler that was offered awhile
back. I witnessed the same thing. "This sampler will make a great addition
to my King's X collection!!!" Excuse me, but aren't promotions like this
supposed to introduce people to bands, not to fatten the collections of
exisiting fans? I own nothing of King's X. I was hoping to get a sampler
so I could listen to them without taking a risk and buying something I
wouldn't like. Another thing, what is this I read about DT fan posers? How
can anyone jump on the bandwagon? There is NO bandwagon. Dream Theater is
not popular enough to the mainstream to be considered a fad. Where was I
when WDADU was out? Well, I have a life and a limited budget. That means
that I can't buy the first album of every band in hopes of them being
successful so I can brag and bitch to the fans that come later with radio &
video exposure. Due to lack of support from the record company that
released WDADU, there are going to be thousands of fans that will be
oblivious to its existence. Does that make them wannabes? Hell no. I also
tried to get some addresses and/or telephone #'s so I could get a promo of
AWAKE. Why? So I could review it for my school newspaper in conjunction
with its release. When did I get a reply? About two weeks after it's
release, talking about a day late and a dollar short. Why didn't I use the
one I got from the radio station? I didn't learn of its existence until
the station offered me promos of Queensryche's new album, which got
reviewed two days later, the weekend before its release. Well, I'm
done...wait...one more thing. I'm glad I hesitated before trying to join
DT's fan club. All the gripes from Ytsejam subscribers quickly nixed that
idea. I thank you for that. Well, I'm done now and glad I got that off of
my chest. One last question. Will the EP, to be recorded in April, be
    released in the US?

hey, i for one bought WDADU the first week it was released. granted it was
pure coincidence. i went into a camelot store in the mall, and the guy
working there was listening to it over the store speakers. "afterlife" was
on, and i listened while i went to go buy "gretchen goes to nebraska" by
king's x (it had just come out). i sat there and listened to afterlife,
thinking to myself that it sounded alot like rush mixed with helstar, and
asked the guy about it. he said "it's dream theater, some friends of mine
from new york" so i bought it on cassette (still have it) and went home
listening to it in my car. despite the shitty production, it stayed in my
car stereo for a long long time, and at the time was tied with mindcrime as
my favorite album. it took a long time, but i finally got it on cd around
'90 or so (it wasn't release on cd at first, i guess, because no one had
it) and by '91 or so it was pretty much available at most music stores.

in early september '92, i was in hastings in college station, with the guys
from the band i was in, and we were looking around at new releases, and our
drummer comes over and says "brian, i have a surprise for you..." he pulls
out I&W and i almost shit. i had no idea they had a new album out. the
last i had heard in the guitar mag was they were looking for a new singer.
of course i bought the album, and wasn't really impressed with it at first.
it grew on me, and eventually i was listening to it constantly, really annoying
my room/bandmates. then they went with me to see dt in houston on 10/30/92
(first time they ever played in houston, i think) and we were all totally
    blown away.

does anyone know the release date of I&W? is it in the FAQ? i am curious to
see how long it had been out when i got it. i know i got wdadu either the
first day or at least the first week it was out, because the guy i bought it
from knew the band and told me. but i am not sure about I&W. i know it wasn't
until the middle of october '92 that PMU started getting airplay.

sorry to ramble on, but i am procrastinating studying for a test :)

Greetings all. This is my first post on to this list, so I hope
I'm doing it right. I'm glad to see that a service like this exists. My
question is for those of you who have recieved "promo-packs." How do you
get these? Where do you get these. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and to Michael Burstin (sorry to post this here), I apologize for not
sending you the tapes. If it's all right, I'll send them to you after my

When this list started, there were over 100 subscribers and many of them had purchased WDADU before IAW had been released.

I heard about Dream Theater from the back cover advertisement on Kerrang! Magazine. I thought the ad looked interesting but hesitated in buying the album. A friend of mine, Brian Vogelsang (co-manager of the Marillion mailing list) recommended it to me, I listened to it and bought it.

But I agree that new fans should be encouraged and not discouraged. Rather than insult them, suggest that they buy the earlier albums--most will really enjoy the older albums. Once those are purchased, the older fans can help the newer ones navigate the bootlegs by recommending the hot ones and warning them off of the bad ones.

I would recommend these 2 bands for Ytsejammers. Of course they aren't DT but similar. I think DT used to open for Magellan and I swear I hear pieces or Pull Me Under in their song Magna Charta (I am no musician so I may be way off).

Magellan's music is similar to DT's, the singer is "different" but he is good.

Crimson Glory is also a great band. Their music is not as technical as DT. Their singer follows the styles of DT and FW.

Someone asked "how could I have known about the band when they don't get any airplay?" This is SO true.

Here in Atlanta, I was lucky as hell to hear "Pull Me Under" on the radio two times before their show here. If I hadn't been tuned in, I'd have missed them and might not be a fan even now. 96rock here did not add Dream Theater to their airplay (back then or now), they just played "PMU" a few times before the show as a favor to the promoter -- and I got -real- lucky. Today, I doubt they'd even play anything off AWAKE.

Keep in mind that not every city has a cool radio station that plays good music -- some of us are stuck in remote areas with few signals carrying, or in big-time cities with stupid program- and music directors who think Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd are the tops. Sad, but true. Yes, I'd -love- to move to Tampa or Detroit or New York or somewhere with 'real' radio.

Hi to all YTSEJAMmers all over the world !!!

Here more explicit and corrected info on DT tour dates in GERMANY :

    February 2 - Bielefeld, PC 69 February 3 - Nuernberg, Stadthalle Fuerth February 4 - Muenchen, Terminal 1 February 6 - Stuttgart, Forum Ludwigsburg February 7 - Leipzig, Auensee February 8 - Hannover, Music Hall February 10 - OffenBACH, Stadthalle !!! February 11 - Duesseldorf, Philipshalle February 25 - Rendsburg, Nordmarkthalle February 26 - Berlin, Huxley's Neue Welt February 27 - Bremen, Aladin March 1 - Hamburg, Docks

Now I have a question concerning the "Burning Heart" symbol on the I&W cover. I noticed a symbol just like this on a TESTAMENT album that has been released in 1990 or so. What's the connection ? Did Dream Theater take this symbol from Testament ? And what does it mean ?

    Bye !!!

    - Andreas -

P.S. any further info on the EP that will be released next year?

I can vouch for Jens ability to play (and shread on) stuff other than the 'rock' stuff he's mainly known for. Check out the latest Tony MacAlpine album "Premonition." Jens solos on two cuts and his playing is anything but 'rock'. It's very fusion-y. It's still some heavy stuff but this guy has REAL chops and shouldn't be pigeon-holed by saying that he only has a 'rock' style. Jens rules!

    Dear Chris,

In response to your disgust in those of us that won a promo kit, sorry. But actually, I think that everyone who submitted a top ten list received one. Same with the King's X sampler, I just responded to a post. (That was the first King's X music I've ever owned, and I like them a lot now.) Actually, I acquired backstage passes for DT just from replying to a post, as well. Just be persistant and take any opportunity to can to get free stuff. Have a nice day!

Do you happen to know how many albums Crimson Glory put out? I've heard _Transcendence_ and _Strange and Beautiful_.

I just recently joined this list (good to know there are so many DT fans out there) and thought I would post a note concerning last night's show (Dec. 4) here in Tucson, AZ:

One of the good things about this show was the small capacity house, probably 200+ people. This allowed me to be right up front, a little left of center.

Fates Warning opened the show and played for only about 40 minutes (bummer!). I was hoping that James L. would come out to sing back up vocals on Life in Still Water (as on the album), but no such luck. Although Mike Portnoy did play roadie for Jim Matheos, he brought out Jim's acoustic during Monument (quite a funny moment, too). Here is FW's set list (not in exact order as my memory is failing me this morning): Outside Looking In Face the Fear Monument Life in Still Water The Eleventh Hour Point of View Eye to Eye Down to the Wire

Then DT came on and floored the audience for about 2 hours, set list as follows (again order is not accurate): Pull Me Under Take the Time (w/ extended jam outro) Another Day (w/ cheesy keyboard-sax solo) 6:00 Caught in a Web (w/ drum solo) A mind Beside Itself 1) Erotomania 2) Voices 3) The Silent Man The Mirror Lie Lifting Shadows Off a Dream and the encore was Metropolis

Also in there some where was a John P. jam and a Dereck S. jam. I think Dereck did a good job of filling Kevin's shoes as far as the live show goes. I will still miss Kevin's unique song writing (as I am sure most DT fans will).

All in all, a great show, every one was in top form (both FW and DT). They will be playing the Phoenix, AZ area tonight (Dec. 5) and then on to the Los Angeles, CA area in a couple of days.

They changed servers on me and I have to resubscribe on my new server. I thought it was odd that I didn't recieve a single DT msg all weekend. Can someone email me with the Screaming In Digital sub address?

Crimson Glory has three albums out (as far as I know): "Crimson Glory", "Transcendence" and one who's title I don't know ("Strange and Beautiful"?). The first two are very good albums. The third one is quite different (so I've heard).

Are the people getting promo pACKS GETTING THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE THE MEMBERS OF THE FAN club? The only thing I ever received from the fan club was a letter telling me what the band was doing after the Music In Progress Tour. Is the band working on fixing their fan club. Someone who is going to a show ask the members what is going on

Longshot asked how he could hear could hear about bands without airplay......simple, word of mouth. A friend told me to get WDADU since I am a huge Rush fan and he thought I'd like them. (Boy, was he right) If you allow all your tastes to be spoon fed to you (On Mtv and Radio) you'll miss out on a ton of quality stuff, in my opinion. Take risks and buy stuff your unfamiliar with....if it's crap just sell it off at a used record shop so it won't be a total loss. (I got Primus' Frizzle Fry and couldn't believe that this band wasn't huge yet at the time)

Geez...I got a ton of requests for trading after my last post about the Green Bay show I was at last year. (A day after the big Milwaukee show) I'm real busy now with finals and projects for school right now...I promise to get back to you all eventually. (That means be patient) I've got a lot of shows from guy's that don't trade with the whole world and they tape their own live stuff as well. I also taped the 11/4/94 show at The Rave in Milwaukee and have 1st gens of the 2 shows at the Starz club in Milwaukee on the last tour and a Complete Summerfest show, 1st gen. I mainly want Boards, FM's, EX audience stuff, and old stuff....I'm not the avid type searching for every show. *****I will trade right away with ANYONE who's got any Kansas I don't have...so please throw me what you have on them.... Also, I don't include set lists (You know what the songs are...you write them out, I don't have time) and send only 1st class. If you don't dub with levels between 0 and 3 dB, get out of business...we don't need you. I don't sell and don't trade for blanks. I don't send cases. Sorry for all you non-bootleg types out there who read this. This was quicker then mailing everyone individually.
