I hope you're not dissapointed, I have friends who DID NOT receive the
promo pack and DO NOT have all that cool stuff.

    Looking forward to the EP.

Now, Here's a question about some kinda live Pay Per View thing in Japan?
I was wondering if it is on NHK BS (1 or 2), WOW-WOW, or what?
I have a freind who is subscribed to WOW-WOW, so I was curious.
So, I'd appreciate it if any of you Japanese Ytsejammers could answer this.

Hi all, I found an article and posted it here (in another post). Sorry for the mess but it is in JAPANESE. I figured some of the Ytsejam folks in Japan might not have access to the newsgroups. So that's why I did it. So, I don't if it will show before or after this post, but I wanted to tell y'al about it so you know that the garbled mess is Japanese and not just some garbage.

    > All right, I've sat here too long and have seen too much of it. How many > people got the promo packs and found them to duplicate items in your > collections? How the hell did people get "chosen" to receive these promo

There were two "choosings"... which were, incidentally, VERY gracious of EastWest and a lot more than any other band ever did.

    1. Those of us who wrote the FAQ, managed the list, did the lyrics or discography, and ran the archive site, all got one.

    2. C-Man posted a TOP-TEN list contest not too long ago, and many people submitted them... 10 winners wound up turning into 30-some promo packs given away.

    > packs anyway? I've been on Ytsejam for quite awhile now and have no memory > of any contest or offer. It gets a little old to see post after post of

Then you have a short memory and/or weren't here yet. But this is VERY VERY recent... we're talking mid-tour... and the tour only started two months ago.

    > people saying, "I got my promo pack!!! Now I have even more stickers than > before!!! I already have the CD's!!! I guess I'll give them away at > Christmas!!!" If it sounds like I'm a poor loser, you are right...I am.

You sure are. I'm not complaining... I already had LIT and LATM, so I arranged a trade with someone on the net for a WDADU promo disc and a Japanese LATM. What it all comes down to is: DT decided to give us an early Xmas. You can sit there and complain about it, or, like me, you can talk to people and see how many have extra stickers/cards/discs to give/trade to you.

    > Where I live you have to donate organs to get decent imports and that's > for Pearl Jam. Forget Dream Theater. I only own four DT items: I&W, AWAKE, > LiT and a promo copy of AWAKE. I got the promo from my university's radio

Start going mailorder like the rest of us who live in out of the way places... the closest record store to me that carries bootlegs and rarities is 31 miles away. OTOH, you can order from cd-connection and Metal Blade Records right off the net. Or pick up a copy of Goldmine magazine at your local newsstand.

    > station. This reminds me of the King's X sampler that was offered awhile > back. I witnessed the same thing. "This sampler will make a great addition > to my King's X collection!!!" Excuse me, but aren't promotions like this > supposed to introduce people to bands, not to fatten the collections of > exisiting fans? I own nothing of King's X. I was hoping to get a sampler

Neither did I, until I got the sampler. It blew me away, and I have since purchased all the KX discs. OTOH, the people who were diehard KX fans really DESERVED such a limited edition disc because they are the ones who see the collector value in it. It's something that's good for everyone unless they're indifferent. It was also offered to EVERYONE back when it was done.. and if you saw the original post and didn't reply, then you have only yourself to blame. If you didn't see the original post, it won't be the last time, so keep your eyes open! :)

    > can anyone jump on the bandwagon? There is NO bandwagon. Dream Theater is > not popular enough to the mainstream to be considered a fad. Where was I > when WDADU was out? Well, I have a life and a limited budget. That means > that I can't buy the first album of every band in hopes of them being

Here's where I agree with you... Dream Theater isn't commercial, no matter how you cut it. I'm just as happy meeting fans who bought Awake a week ago as I am to meet fans who had the Majesty tape in 1986. The new fans are great because you feel so excited for them, and all the stuff they will eventually experience, the way you did. There should not be talk of posers and such in a band where poserhood really dosen't apply. Same goes for Rush. Anyone who manages to get past Tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio counts as a pretty decent RushFan. Maybe not a lunatic RushFanatic(Tm) like myself, but a fan nonetheless.

    > my chest. One last question. Will the EP, to be recorded in April, be > released in the US?

Very likely. LATM, though an import, did sell in the US... From what Mike told me last night (more on that in another post) they want to see it happen.

Yes, _Strange and Beautiful_ is more 'pop' than the others, though I say I've only heard _Transcendence_. There's one song on S&B that I love, though. It's called "Starchamber." The first line of the song is that famous sample from 2001: "My God. It's full of stars." Check it out if you can.

WHERE WERE THESE PEOPLE THEN? It just seems that a whole bunch > of people jumped on the bandwagon when Pull Me Under got some airplay on > Mtv and radio.....so many people are trendy out there and dictate their > listening habits towards whatever someone feeds them. I feel I have to speak up here. I'm one of the people who caught Pull Me Under on the radio and I've been a DT fan ever since. But I don't think I'm one of the trendy fans for the following reasons:

    1) The reason I'm VERY VERY interested in DT is Portnoy's drumming. I think he's a genius and he plays like it. As long as he continues to play like a genius (personally, I'm not sure he'll ever stop), I'm a Portnoy (or DT, if you like) fan. That simple. If one wanted to, I guess one could call that a trend, but I don't.

    2) The ONLY reason I even heard of DT was Pull Me Under being played on the radio. I just haven't established the kinds of connections for getting music that seem to run rampant on this list (trading tapes, CDs, getting firsthand copies of bootleg videos, etc.) and to tell you the truth, I don't think that would work for me because I am VERY picky about the kind of music I listen to, as opposed to a lot of people on this list, who [WARNING: "Broad generalization" immediately follows] seem open to everything under the sun.

    3) NO ONE I know has ever heard of DT. That puts me way in the minority around here. For this reason, I don't think you could classify me as one of those people who just got into DT because all of their friends were doing it.

That's it, really. I just wanted to let everyone know that, just because people never heard of WDADU when it came out, doesn't mean that their interest in DT is "just a phase." > > Well, just let me end by saying I'm glad that people caught on with > their second album and it hasn't taken people 5 or 6 albums to see the > greatness in the band. Well, after seeing Brian's post, I decided to post this here... I had this saved after reading all of the posts on the AOL DT board... Anyway, here's how I got into DT...

I had never heard of DT until winter break my freshman year in school (WOW, that's already almost 2 years ago... damn). I am home from Boston, and some of my friends are telling me about this awsome CD that they got... They didn't have it with them, or didn't have it with them, but I generally like the same music as they did, so I figure, what the hell, I'll try it... I go into the CD shop, look for it, and there it was sitting... I looked at the cover, and though that it looked good, and actially asked some of the people working there about it, and although one person never heard of DT before, another said that I&W was a great CD, so I buy it... I get home with the CD, pop it in, and didn't know what to think... not what I expected, but I figured that I'd give it a few more listens before giving up on it... Within the next few days, I was hooked... Listened to it almost constantly. I, unfortunatly, got into DT a week too late... They were playing the Metropool (Pittsburgh) about a week before I got the CD... Anyway, I get back to school, and nobody there had even heard of DT beofre... but I played the CD constantly, and created at least one or 2 other fans... About this time, I also got a modem for my computer, and start playing around with my basic email account from my school, so I play around with the USENET boards, and see a post about Ytsejam and Dream Theater, so I figure, can't hurt to subscribe... I do (I have been a Ytsejam reader since issue 19. Today's issue was 607 or something like that) Once on there, I discover other DT fans, and info starts slowly becoming discovered about the band. My first priortiy was to get a live tape, which I found rather quickly. After that, word of the then impossible to find "WDADU" started to emerge, and we go on a furious hunt for it (I remember, there was someone, email went as "Windigo, the Feral" or something like that that was keeping a list of all of the CD shops in the country that had copies of WDADU). I finally found a copy at home by spring break. I also managed to get a copy of the Majesty Demos, and others from someone on Ytsejam... (I think that 95% of the early copies of that tape came through my tape deck).... Anyway, thats the story behind me becoming a DT fan...

(I really don';t think that I would have been possibly been such the DT fan that I am now w/o Ytsejam and internet...)

Jason Hough and I did not get promo kits. Since we manage the list, that part of the above wasn't true :)

Don't get me wrong: I'm already a fan and already have (most) of that stuff. I think that it's more appropriate for it to go into the hands of those who are new(er) fans.

Alright, I'm afraid I have to speak here, after being a lurker for God knows how long.

I am not only a very serious DT fan (ever since WDADU was released, when the boys in FW first mentioned them), but a diehard King's X fan. I've seen them live every chance I have gotten, and have shaken hands with two out of the three. Just because I own a CD copy of every song they've ever released to the general public, does that mean I would not highly value a promotional CD package? Hardly...I would value it all the more. While the promo business does turn people onto new bands, I'm almost tempted to believe that that is not the real reason it is there.

In other words, as a serious DT fan, I would consider it a full kiss on the lips from the band if they were to do something to "fatten my collection". Which, it seems, they are trying to do.

I do. :-) I got into "rock music" through Kiss (...) in the first place (must have been 1983), and Dokken was one of the first "non-Kiss" rock bands I listened to, starting with "Under Lock And Key" (1986). Incidentally, I didn't care *that* much for "Rage For Order" then, which I bought the same year. By now it is among my favourite albums (both QR and rock in general), and QR has become my favourite band (DT being a close second :->).

But back to the (off) topic. My favourite track by Dokken would also have to be "The Hunter", and the solo in that song must be one of the most awesome of all time IMHO. Other goodies by Dokken include: Breaking The Chains, Paris Is Burning, Don't Close Your Eyes, Just Got Lucky, Alone Again, Will The Sun Rise, In My Dreams, Prisoner, Kiss Of Death, So Many Tears, Burning Like A Flame, Dream Warriors and Walk Away.

    Is that enought? :-)

Neither Don himself (Crash'N Burn was nice) nor George could keep it with that at all.

Does anyone know a good record store in London where to get not-so-mainstream (rare) stuff, like the DT single? I plan on doing a trip to London for attending the Queensryche gig at the Royal Albert Hall (March 12th) and would like to visit some good stores who have a little more than "the usual" in the rock department. :-)

Anyone who has some good addresses to share, please e-mail me!

    Thanks a lot, Matt

    >Do you happen to know how many albums Crimson Glory put out? I've heard >_Transcendence_ and _Strange and Beautiful_.

Then you have missed their debut album (self-titled), is has a silver mask on the front cover, with a rose put beside it right and left. Go and get it, if you can, there're awesome songs on it, like "Valhalla", "Dragon Lady", "Azrael" and the athmospheric "Lost Reflection". Sadly enough, Strange and Beautfiul was more a less a disappointment IMHO, since they turned their backs on the "progressive" style and pursuit a more "standard" style of rock music, though "The Chant" wasn't all that bad. :-)

    Hello,

As said before, Crimson Glory released three albums (Crimson Glory and Trancendence, which are some of the best melodic metal albums I ever heard and Stange But Beautyful, which sounds a bit like Saigon Kick and has only the fault that Cgimson Glory is written on it). Besides that they released a EP called Dream Dancer which features the title-track (a real Killer) and a remix of one of the best songs from the debut (Lost Reflection). After the release of the third record Midnight (the singer) left the band and as far as I know the band split up. (what a mess when you listen tho the first two records... :( ). BTW I am searching the Demo-Tapes....

Watchtower is one of the most technical Bands in the world. The Released two records (Energetic Disassambely on their own label, which is very rare and later in europe as a rerelease, and Controll And Resistance). The first record was recorded with Jason McMaster on vocals (now Dangerous Toys) and Danny White (I thikt that was his name) on guitar (also played guitar on Don Dokkens soloalbum). The style on that record could be described as Jazz-Metal (like Cynic today). They where replaced by Alan Tecchio on vocals (former member of one of the best techno-speed bands ever: Hades) and Ron Jarzombak (I don't know how to spell it..) on guitar who played with S.A. Slayer. They recorded the second album and toured throughout europe. Then Alan left the band and joined Non-Fiction (which were formed by Dan Lorenzo, former Hades-guitarist). (as far as I know this band also split up and Dan and Alan founded with Andy James (formed Drummer of Savatage) the Band Between Two Thiefes). Anyway Watchtower are still searching a replacement for Alan and the checked some interesting guys like John Arch (former singer in Fates Warning). (He, if someone got a tape with these rehearsals, mail to me) and Jay Peele (Inferno). If you are interested how far technical music can go, check'em out.

Why am I having such a hard time getting hold of DT material? It took me three weeks to find a copy of "Awake", I still haven't managed to get hold of the "LIE" CD single, and nobody has ever heard of "WDADU" - I even tried to get them to order it specially, I gave them the catalogue number, but they couldn't get hold of it.

It's not like there is any shortage of music stores here . . . . so what's the problem?

    Cheers just now . . . . Graham B.

I just wanted to add my .02 on this topic:

No, I did not get WDADU when it first came out. I even live on Long Island and I had never even heard of them (maybe I hung out with the wrong people, read the wrong magazinesm, whatever). If I heard WDADU at the time, I might not have even liked it.

Then I&W comes out and PMU gets some airplay. The song does not immedately impress me, and in fact, the chorus annoyed me so much for some reason. One week I see Take The Time on eMpTyV (highly edited of course). Result: (smack myself on forhead) buy album, listen to album, like album alot, listen to album constantly (force album on friends). I loaned the album to a few people at work, older 70's prog-types: instant new DT fans.

Compare to Megadeth, if you will. I happened to be a fan of theirs since the Peace Sells.. album. I liked their first four albums (up to Rust In Peace). Then they put out two crappy albums that made them multi-platinum stars, and got them millions of new fans who when you talk to them utter "Peace what?" or "I dont like their old stuff, it's too fast". These are posers since they don't like, or even refuse to acknowledge their past. Bottom line: a fan is a fan is a fan. But a true fan is one who (while they don't even have to like or agree with it) is appreciates the whole body of work of an artist or band.

Anyway, to answer the original point of this thread way, way back, about DT fans being posers if they arrived after 1989, it's just not true. Anyone who hears one DT (except Lie) will immediately know if it's to their liking or not. With the exception of Lie, I dont think its possible for DT to ever become hugely popular to the point of being popular over one big single.

Oh how I dread the day the Silent Man is released as a single, look what happened to Queensryche.

i have an example of a 'poser'... this guy at the pittsburgh show, just stood around, looking around until lie came on... he moshed and sang along to lie, and looked really clueless when they played the ending that's not on the video version. and of course he was, like, 6'3 and standing a few feet in front of me. blocking my view and he was totally bored and just standing there taking up space until lie. pissed me off. and he looked really annoyed at me because i was singing along to everything. and he left the show before metropolis. of course, he was around for autographs...

and there waas that chick who got mad at me because my hair hit her once when i was headbanging. sorry. i'm short. i have longish hair. i'm a dt fan. if you just came to see lie get the hell out of my way

I'm not a subscriber to this list, but I've had numerous people send me mail about the discussions on Dokken as of late. I thought I would put in my .02 *smile*

It's nice to see so many people into Dokken. I have been running a Dokken/Lynch list for a little over two years now, and I thank those who gave the addresses and info about the list. Feel free to subscribe to kirsten@mik.uky.edu

I saw someone mention a Dokken newsgroup. I've thought about this a few times, but I didn't know how to go about it. We could try. Traffic has been pretty cool lately with the new CD coming out (I think it might have been released in japan yesterday...)

Dokken had a few hits. Someone mentioned "Alone Again". They also had "In My Dreams," "It;s not Love," "Burning like a Flame" "Dream Warrios," "Heaven Sent," and I think "Walk Away" even got some air play. There were videos for those songs, as well as "Breaking the Chains," "Into the Fire," "Just Got Lucky" and "The HUnter."

Thanks for putting up with this Dokken post on your list. DT is a great band too!! 8) Its nice to see so many people with taste

    Kirsten
