I'm not sure who the fuck you think you are, but you're impressing the hell out
of me. You get "MOST INTIMIDATING TRADER AWARD". I've traded with about half
of this list, and we all do it the same: Setlists are always included, always
on high bias type II tapes, and uh.. we usually think its pretty cool to send
the case along with the tape. So I would say that its we who do not need you,
and that YOU should get out of business. I'll get your shows from someone
else. I'd rather lose a generation than put up with your bullshit.

    Everyone,
I just got this important info. I'm not sure if its been posted yet.

There's a nationwide virus being spread via e-mail under the title "GOOD TIMES"
If you see this, do not read it, or download the file under the same name.
Again, at all costs, avoid an e-mail message or file with the title "GOOD
    TIMES".

This virus contains code which will rewrite your harddrive.
Info from University of Pittsburgh affiliates, and Megadeth mailing list.

Well... seeing so many people complaining about bad traders on
several digests that this message is going out to, I though that i
woiuld Take The Time (bad joke, I know :) to mention the small list
that I have been compiling of bad traders.

This list is NOT for people that don;t send cases, don;t send set
lists, or even take a little longer than most in trading, but for the
people that have gone through several trades with several people
without ever sending the tapes that they owe.

The list that I have compiled is, so far, at least (and thankfully)
pretty small... but with several people complaining, I though I would
    remind others about it.

The format of the list includes as much info on the person as
possible, INCLUDING the person who sent me the complaint. If you have
any people this fit this category, please let me know and I will
include it on the list. Keep in mind, do NOT use this list b/c you
are pissed off at someone... it is not for that...

Also, keep in mind that a person who is on this list is not
necessarly excluded from ever trading again... All that they have to
is to send out their tapes, and the other person return the tapes once
the tapes that they are due are recieved.

If you have any submissions, or would like to see my current list,
please let me know by PRIVATE email and do not reply to this post.

No news and views this time, just some humble begging from the UK.

Please, please, please could some kind soul be good enough to mail me the UK dates for DT's tour next year. If the Germany one are known, the UK ones must surely be out, no?!

I'd hate to miss out on a ticket, so please get back to me asap.

    Cheers in advance, 'jammers,

The best place I can think of that you'll be able to find easily is the HUGE HMV store in Oxford Street. It's got one of the largest metal sections I've every seen. If they don't have everything that DT's ever done, I'll be surprised. It's the only place I've ever seen the Queen of the Reich on CD as well...

This is probably overdue, but, IMHO (now that I finally know what that means!), DT is the most talented band on the planet. LaBrie fits the band perfectly. It was obvious from "Live In Tokyo" that LaBrie wanted to scream! And "Awake" gave him the opportunity to do so. "Awake" is the best of their 3 albums IMO, and DT continues to get better and better. "Awake" is both a lyric and musical masterpiece. No one else comes close to DT, as far as talent, and musicianship.

If you like DT, you're cool! Although, sometimes I like to brag that I bought WD&DU when it came out.

Early this year I contacted Watchtower and they sent me a tape with 3 new songs on it. None of these songs have vocals and they asked me to overdub my own lyrics and melodies onto the tape. Well, needless to say I have not gotten around to this yet. I did write the lyrics and vocal lines but have not recorded my voice onto the tape yet. Around that time, INFERNO was almost defunct but now we have a CD out in Europe and a full line-up. I still may record my voice on the tape just to see what they think and leave my options open.

If you don't have 'Control And Resistance', check it out. If you like Cynic, you'll love Watchtower.

    Hi everyone.

What are bubble chamber tracks? I'm just three days short of finishing my formal education for my B.S. in Physics, so I guess I know what they are.

You know those pink containters that children get that contain a sort of detergent solution and a plastic wand... No, wait. That's not it. Ummm.... Ok, I got it! A bubble chamber is a device that's used to determine the momentum of charged nuclear particles. The chamber is filled with superheated liquid hydrogen. When a particle passes through, it triggers boiling around it, producing ... guess what? BUBBLES! By bending the particle's path with a magnetic field, the momentum can be determined. The bubbles give a visible record of the path, which is then photographed. Is this what is supposed to be inside the Awake sleeve? I dunno.

At least now our lives are all complete.

    Hope that helps!

    Toodles! Glenn

You don't even have to live in the sticks to lack decent radio. Indianapolis (alright, not a thriving metropolis - but big) doesn't have a hard rock/metal station anymore either. Which is too bad, because when I&W hit it big they played the shit out of it.

That sad fact remains that fans of metal - moreso than any other radio listening group - lack the one thing that radio stations and big business love: disposable income. This obviously doesn't apply to everyone, but it stands as a broad generalization.

No shit.. I read that and immediately I knew I would never be trading with that guy ... between Mike Burstin, Brian Cox, and I we probably have the largest collective boot collection on Ytsejam, and we don't mind at all "going the extra mile" for our trades... because we know when someone gets our tapes and sees the setlists, and cases, and so forth, they really feel good about getting the tape, and then you get that many more genuine offers and good trades.

What's this 0 and 3 db nonsense? You record the tape exactly as you have it. Anyone who messes with things is asking for trouble insomuch as the tape can only _lose_ generational quality. A lot of older (as in, more collectible, and more desirable) Rush and Zep boots are taped at way odd decibel levels... you don't mess with 'em because you want the next person who gets a copy from you to agree with your quality rating, and feel good about trading with you.

    > ps. My heart goes out to you and your time problem. If only we could imagine > what it would be like to have finals and no time, perhaps we could better > understand your reasons for being such an asshole.

Yeah... I have his time constraints plus a 40 hour workweek, yet I can find time to print out setlists on the ole' Caseliner program...

Hello everyone. It seems there is a thread here of folks having to defend their reasons for being a DT fan by saying when they started listening to the band, what albums, boots, etc. they own and so on. There are also others who claim to be "real" or "better" fans based on what DT stuff they own. I say anyone who can get pleasure out of any band, be it musical appreciation, a particular emotion, etc. is a fan. The number of albums you have by them or how many times you've seen them live or whether or not you have their lyrics memorized should be irrelevant. For myself, I like DT for the feeling I get when I listen to their music and I'm a drummer so I admire Portnoy's style. That's it. I *only* have the three studio albums, but that's because my tastes vary widely and I have only so much money to spend on cd's. I'm also not a big collector of anything. I have gotten several of my friends to listen/appreciate DT, and each of them likes something different about the band. I know someone who LOVES them more than me but doesn't have WDADU 'cause he hates Dominici. Is he a poser, not in my opinion. People listen to what they listen to for different, personal reasons, and it's not really for others to judge. Thanks for listening, ALL you DT fans! __________________________________________________________ | Andrew Joseph Feyder | "You know, life moves pretty | | Gustavus Adolphus College | fast. Hmm...you throw some interesting contradictions around in this post. First of all, in the preceding paragraph re: Megadeth, you (a) criticize their two crappy albums, then (b) tell us that a true fan is someone who appreciates the whole body of work...("Well, it's shit, but I appreciate it!")

    > Anyway, to answer the original point of this thread way, way back, about > DT fans being posers if they arrived after 1989, it's just not true. > Anyone who hears one DT (except Lie) will immediately know if it's to > their liking or not. With the exception of Lie, I dont think its possible > for DT to ever become hugely popular to the point of being popular over > one big single.

Here's another one. You tell us that people will know IMMEDIATELY whether or not DT is for them. But for two full paragraphs earlier in the post, you talk about how much you wouldn't have liked WDADU if you had heard it, and how PMU "annoyed" you.

    > Oh how I dread the day the Silent Man is released as a single, look what > happened to Queensryche. >

What would that be? That more people appreciate them now? That they have the resources to put out albums that before, they couldn't afford to? I think the boys in DT might enjoy that.

    James

More Crimson Glory Info: The band is from Sarasota, Florida. I have two (of apparently their three) albums: "Transcendence" and "Strange & Beautiful". "Transcendence" was released in 1988 on Roadrunner Records. The album contains ten outstanding tracks. The vocalist, Midnight, has an impressive range, and the instrumental performance is a treat. Definitely check out the precision work on "Eternal World". A criticism I've heard leveled at this release is that it sounds too much like Queensryche. Midnight's voice is similar to Tate's, but calling "Transcendence" a Queensryche rip-off is like calling DT a rip-off of Rush and Anthrax (I once actually read where someone said this). "Strange and Beautiful" came out in 1991 on Atlantic Records. For this album, the band switched from the five member line-up of "Transcendence" (Midnight-vocals, Jon Drenning-lead guitar, Ben Jackson- rhythm guitar, Jeff Lords-bass, Dana Burnell-drums) to a foursome with a new drummer (vocals, lead and bass same, Ravi Jakhotia-drums). This album moved from the mythological bend of some of the songs "Transcendence" to more cerebral subject matter. The addition of Ravi added an almost African flavor to the drumming. The album was a fitting follow-up to "Transcendence". All in all, both albums are outstanding, I would strongly recommend them to any progressive metal fan. Also, if anyone knows anything about their "Crimson Glory" album or knows about the bands current status, please tell me!!

Metal Blade is a record label which has been around for a while. For more information, send mail to MtlBldRcds@aol.com and you should be able to get a list of what they've got.

    > So if there are any more, please let me, and all other ytsejamers know. > then I will have a merry progressive christmas. :) > > a few King Crimson CDs... (I have Larks Tounge in Aspic and I REALLY like > it... awesome album.)

If you don't have them, try "Red", "VROOOM" (their new EP), and "Discipline" You might also be interested in subscribing to the King Crimson mailing list (elephant-talk-request@arastar.com). No need to do the old:

thing with this list (it's going to a human--me).

    > a marillion cd, probably that childhood cd, I forget the name. misplaced > childhood. i think.

Yup, it's Misplaced Childhood. You might want to look at the FAQ for deciding which one you want (I'd suggest MC as your first Marillion. Then I'd try "Script for a Jester's Tear" and "Brave" to see which direction you should go). The FAQ can be retrieved by sending:

get freaks faq-2.6-1 get freaks faq-2.6-2 get freaks faq-2.6-3

to freaks-request@arastar.com (yeah, yet another prog list on this machine).

Have you heard early Genesis yet (no, not "Abacab" or "Mama")? Songs like "Supper's Ready", "Musical Box", and "Cinema Show" have really impressive musicianship (and you get Peter Gabriel on vocals, not Phil Collins).

As far as Progressive rock in general is concerned, a good place to start is the Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Rock (which can be downloaded). It has entries for a lot of bands. You can also get good info from the alt.music.progressive FAQs (if there's a demand, I can start making them available for email downloads from here. Otherwise, you can ftp them from ucdavis).

    For progressive rock sources, send:

    get ph7 faq2.mailorder

to ph7-request@arastar.com and you'll get a list of mail order sources that specialize in progressive rock. If you're unsure of a particular vendor, the list probably has someone who has dealt with that vendor.

Good luck in your progressive rock search :)

    I agree about Q104

Try 89.5FM. It's Seton Hall U's station. Plays metal all week (except Sunday's their all Christian). Depending on your reception (the signal comes in from NJ so its kinda weak in the city). Easily the station to listen to in the NY/NJ area.

First, I'd like to thank you for being concerned about the readers of this mailing list :) Unfortunately, this is a hoax. It's useful to understand how viruses work and spread. So I'm going to waste some bandwidth on this.

The following is a message which states that Good Times is a hoax. The risks forum is a fairly reputable source (and yes, I confirmed that this is actually out in the comp.risks newsgroup):

Somehow, this virus alert has been propagating out of control. It must be a virus in the virus alert. (Note: I don't mean to belittle the alert, but there must be some way of controlling its propagation. I have received it 4 times now from different sources.) >I have just received this message and been asked to take it seriously: >There is a virus on America Online being sent by E-Mail. But it appears to be a complete hoax, as suspected by Rob Furr <rfurr@jazz.ncren.net>, who was amused at the close timing of the AOL message and Michael Slavitch's item in RISKS-16.60, and who added There are idiots in the world who think it's awfully funny to cry "Wolf" as soon as someone else notices that it's theoretically possible that wolves exist.
