Well since all of you Jammers are posting about your starts with the
music of Dream Theater, I'll post mine.

I was one of the guys who heard Pull Me Under played over and over on the
radio in Baltimore. This prompted me to order the album from Columbia
House. I got it and listened to it for the first time. I wasn't very
impressed but I heard Pull Me Under and that was cool. A couple of
months later there was a concert annoucement for Dream Theater, and it
was only $15. I said, "What the Hell, I'll check them out." So I
travelled to Pier Six in Baltimore for the show and I was completely
BLOWN AWAY!!! I had never experienced such an intense show, they even
surpassed seeing Rush on the Presto tour. Portnoy was the one who made
the greatest impression, with all the sweat flying off of hime, he
refused to yield and played all two hours with such fury. I went back
and listened to the album again, and I loved it. I picked up Live At The
Marquee and WDADU at a local record store a couple of months later. Then
came lots of live stuff and Awake, but that is another story.

As far as the Promotional stuff goes, I thought about replying to
that contest but decided it wasn't worth the effort, I'd never get any
cool stuff. Oh well, I blew that one though I just got some cool stuff
today in the mail from Atlantic records. I replied to a post about
questions for a Neil Peart "Burning For Buddy" album interview and asked
something about his kit and effects, misc. percussion, I forget exactly.
Well they sent me a promotional music sampler with some wierd stuff, I
recognize five of the bands (Buddy Rich, The Jerky Boys, Page and Plant,
Melvins (Rush fans love these guys <grin>), Collective Soul) but that was
cool of them. It also included Neil Peart series Pro-Mark burning for
Buddy drumsticks. So that was pretty cool of them, the morale is anybody
can get free stuff, you just gotta take some initiative.

                                            Later,

                                            Mike

For anyone who missed out on the Kings X cd thing...I might be able to
get ONE of the CD's for a certain lucky individual. I'm not quite sure
yet...one of the local used record stores got one in...and they might
still have it (I'll check tomorrow). If they still have this CD...they're
probably gonna want like $9 for it...but I'll try to con them out of it.
I will select the individual who will get this by doing a Top Ten type
thing...and the most creative will be able to get this (this IS the only
fair way of doing it). Once again I'm not sure if the store still has
it...but they told me about it a couple of weeks ago...and noone around
here is into Kings X...so don't bother with sending posts right
now...just be thinking of a good Kings X top ten list. Take care...and
    I'll update this tomorrow. Later!

Hello. Sorry for the non-DT content, but someone asked if Crimson Glory
is still around and I just happened to see something regarding them tonight.
In the local Florida music mag "JAM", they report that CG is now going
under the name "The Crush". They just finished opening for Savatage in
Florida. They have an 8-song demo which is receiving interest from several
labels, esp. "Zero Records" in Japan. Two of the songs, "River", and "Soul
Searching" are in rotation on radio stations in Tampa and Fort Myers. The
band includes guitarist John Drenning, bassist Jeff Lords, drummer Ravi,
and vocalist Billy Martinez. Hope this info helps...
BTW - The Jam issue that had the Dream Theater interview that someone
was nice enough to post a few weeks ago is still available down here. Let
me know via e-mail if you'd want a copy picked up for you...

Don't complain about not having a rock station...
In Holland, we have one radio program (called 'Carola'), 1 hour, 4 days a week,
in which you can hear 2 (two!) rock songs; which makes a total of 10 rock songs
a week (every now and then you can even hear Dream Theater on the radio!)

Carola is fired; her show ends at the 1st of january; she plays too heavy
    music.....

Thanks to Carola for giving us at least at little bit real and honest music.

    Long live CD players...

    Hello fellow Jammers!

#1: Since I've read some postings about German and Dutch DT dates I would like to know if there's anyone with a complete (or 'complete') listing of the European Tour and esp the Swedish dates. I haven't noticed anything here in the local papers announcing a DT gig.

#2: Did anyone watch MTV's Most Wanted (MTV Europe that is) last friday or this week? I sent them some email complaining about the lack of music and esp DT on eMpTyV, and I also (in a separate mail) requested LIE. Ray said that he'd just got his first email-request last thursday so I figured I would have a decent chance of getting LIE played, I wasn't able to watch any of the last shows due to lotsa school.

#3: Some people here on the list consider themselves better because 'they have been fans since WDADU' and have therfore got a better perception of what DT's music is supposed to be about. Bullshit, as many people that got in touch with DT after IAW was released have also become hardcore-fans and started to buy bootlegs etc as well as the guys that bought WDADU initially. I can also very well imagine people buying WDADU but not becoming fans and not buying the other albums, WDADU isn't the greatest album ever IMO. Therefore I don't consider the guy who bought WDADU the first day any better than a guy who bought AWAKE yesterday. Ok, you were fortunate to have run into the band early on, but it could also have happened two or three years later. I never heard about DT until about two years ago, and I'm following what's happening in music, how would I even when they got 'no' attention on a large scale? Which radio stations would you expect to play WDADU-tracks, (we've only had commercial radio in Sweden for about one year, before that there was only a very limited amount of stations, and even now it's all just AC, AOR etc. except for Bandit 105.5, an american radio station which moved here last year. They play rock, however not DT.) Maybe some special Metal-show did play DT once or twice in 1989-1992, but DT was not the only thing happening and to most people not the most important either. Don't expect everyone (or anyone) to be like you. Did MTV say or do or play anything before the PMU-video came out? No I don't think so. Then HBB started to give DT the attention they deserve, they give DT what they deserve, maybe to you DT is the only band in the world but you know, they aren't really. (although they're one of the few good bands :-)) I didn't catch anything in the mags I read, Ok I don't read Kerrang and Raw so therefore I missed what they possibly wrote. I have not seen many reviews of either IAW or AWAKE. And what about the availability of WDADU. (Mechanic records are a sorry bunch!) Even in some places in america WDADU has been hard to find (some of you say so at least) and then imagine the situation here in Sweden. Now it's available in most stores for about $10-$30, but two years ago? Mechanic records even stopped printing it, for what I've heard.

You blame the people who have found out about DT lately and are coming to see the shows. Last month I've read your reviews and many said that shows were moved to smaller venues due to lack of ticket-sales. As it seems to me DT need every fan in the US (and the rest of the world too for that matter), new or old doesn't matter. If you don't like the new fans moshing/not recognizing older songs or if want to see better, just get upfront closest to the stage. Take some time off and get there early, if you really are the hardcore fans you pretend to be, that shouldn't be a problem. It seems to me that you only want DT for yourselves (same thing as with the alternative turning into mainstream) and that people who discovered them after WDADU aren't good enough. DT knew what they were doing when they wrote LIE or any of the, to the larger crowd, more appealing songs. They wanted to attract new fans and if THEY want those fans, it's none of your business. I could go on raving all night but you have probably got the point.

#4: Since I am a baby fan (only been a DT-head for two years) I would like to get my hands on the stuff that would make me a real fan, I will then be allowed to have smartass opinions, kick peoples butts at concerts if they're too loud, prove myself to the band afterwards in some stupid way by telling them all how much I like the Wanted Dead or Alive demo, (I probably don't but I'll have to act cool). Yeah, that would rule! (irony)

I'm interested in: - Majesty and other demos - Ytsejam shirt

    and also the upcoming? WDA(J)(LB)U

If anyone (preferrably in Sweden or Europe, P&P overseas is quite expensive) would like to share demos/boots with me please mail me privately. And is it possible to get a Ytsejam-shirt, is there anyone with one too many. Will there be any more made?

Long posts come to an end too!

Take care, and please don't be cruel to new fans. It's not their fault!

Tampa? No way. I've lived in Tampa, and if you don't like DancePop on one station, MTV grunge/cheap thrash on another, or country, you don't have anything. Tampa radio really sucks...there was a day when you could get jazz, mostly commercial, but even that is gone.

    No progressive rock there.

Well, I guess I should speak for Tampa (Bay), Florida because I feel really sorry about you people's sad predicament. I believe the radio that the original poster is referring to is 98ROCK, who plays all the real, heavy rock and metal. They are sometimes obnoxious, with sayings like: "If it's too loud, you're too old!" and my favorite: "Bite Me!". I haven't been able to listen to them for quite a few months because I'm here in sunny Tallahassee Florida trying to finish my CS degree.

It's a real shame that Tampa doesn't have a true classic rock station anymore. (Boo hoo :'-) ) If 95ynf was still around, I don't think I would be here that much. That was the coolest station in the whole area, for almost 14 years. Well, at least we still have 98ROCK.

I can't seem to decide which I like better, 98ROCK or ZRock 106.1, here in Tallahassee. I just seem to be a real lucky music fan. There is usually always a music station within broadcast distance to listen to. And, if you're on the road, there is always DT and Rush. :)

Just thought I'd clue you in as to the radio discussion, C-Ya,

Okay, I've been a subscriber to this list for only a few weeks (those of you who are on AOL may know me as BREDSTIK) and have been a lurker until now, but I've seen some posts lately that I absolutely MUST comment on. First of all, someone actually called certain DT fans TRENDY???? How the hell could DT possibly be considered a trend of any kind??? I know very few people that have even HEARD of them, let alone heard their music. Where were they in 89 when Dream and Day came out? you ask. Well, I, for one, was in seventh or eight grade (I don't know what time of year it came out) quite content with my Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth and other such "starter" bands (not to discredit them in any way, mind you). The first time I heard of Dream Theater was on a weekly hard rock/metal radio show when they played--you guessed it--Pull Me Under. I bought I&W on Dec 27, 1992 and have been quite a loyal fan ever since. Since then, I have acquired:

--When Dream and Day Unite --Live at the Marquee --Images and Words: Live in Tokyo --Dance of Eternity (single disc import of a show in Buffalo) --InstruMENTAL --The Majesty Demo --Awake --The Lie promo single

And I expect to acquire Dance of Eternity (the double disc set) and/or Lost in the Sky over Christmas break. This is not to say that people who only have I&W and/or Awake are not true fans either. If they have these albums, it is because they like the music; there is no bandwagon to jump on, no majority to go along with. Not everyone is lucky enough to have connections with the Net and good import shops nearby like many of us are; the fact that most of the DT stuff that's available is import only can be problem for people without connections. I love Dream Theater. There music pleases me greatly. So I ask you: If I didn't hear of them back in '88 or '89, am I not a "true fan"? Is Michael Burstin not a "true fan"? Think about it. Dream Theater is not and never will be a trend. If you want them all to yourself because you've known of them longer, that's pretty damn selfish. As for new fans, don't put them down because they're new, encourage them! Enlighten them with your resources, encourage them to check out everything that's out there! :)

    --Rob

P.S.--I've only had this Internet address for a couple of months, and I don't know how to do one of those neato 'sig' thingies so many of you have, so I'd GREATLY appreciate it if someone could E-mail and enlighten me! Thanks in advance! :)

I was wondering if anyone else got into Dream Theater like I did. I think it was April of '92 when a good DJ friend of mine got a promo copy of I&W in the mail from Atco/EastWest. Needless to say, we were hooked from the start, and played the shit out of it all summer. No one had ever heard of the band, save one friend who nearly fainted when I told him I found WDADU on disc, which took a lot of looking, let me tell you. We couldn't even find I&W in Connecticut until the fall!

I don't think it's fair to call people bandwagon-jumpers, since DT is just coming into its own in terms of airplay and other exposure. I didn't know DT existed before I&W showed up on my friend's doorstep, and it got virtually no airplay, except for some Pull Me Under, and ONCE I heard Another Day on I95 out of Danbury, CT. I think we should all be thankful that DT is hitting it big, which can only mean that we'll have much more material to look forward to in years to come.

Just thought I'd throw my two cents in...

hard rock/metal station? What's one of those. Hell, you should try living in the UK for a bit. This is the country that seems to think Bon Jovi is the best metal artist in the world (I kid you not). So why is it that so many people here seem surprised to find out Keep the Faith wasn't his debut? Jeez...

It depends on your mailer (the mail interface that you're using) and the operating system. In unix, if you have a file called ~/.signature it will often be automatically included. If you're using Unix, tell me the mail interface that you're using (pine, mail, mush, or whatever) and I'll tell you how to include your ~/.signature (I know how to with most MUA's).

Damn! my email's been down for a whole week (expect my review of the SFO show and a cool story later tonight...), I'm finally back.

Anyway, I asked Mike what the style of the new album was going to be and he told me to tell you guys it will be "Industrial Bluegrass".

Actually, he reminded me to tell that to the list three times that night, so I'm telling you...

And, both he and Derek again expressed their appreciation for getting the stack of ytsejams to read on the bus.

    later,

" I think DT used to open for Magellan and I swear I hear pieces or Pull Me Under in their song Magna Charta* (I am no musician so I may be way off)."

Now that is news to me! I don't recall Magellan and DT ever touring together, in fact I don't recall Magellan ever touring?I will have to ask a Mr. W. Gardner on this to clarify it as fact or fiction! :{)} Perhaps you might be refering to the great prog band MARILLION? I know of a tour they did with DT during Marillion's "Holidays in Eden" US tour.

    *FYI, the song is Magna Carta and your not to far off with the comparison (although I think that Magellan is more keyboard driven then DT, i.e. Yes, ELP). I highly recommend Magellan, these guys are working on their third album entitled "Test of Wills" due out in 1995. I also recommend that you purchase "Hour of Restoration" and "Impending Ascension", these guys are incredible and will highly appeal to many DT fans! The albums are available on the Magna Carta label, for more info write to: Magna Carta 208 East 51st Street #1820 New York, NY 10022 Tell them Tony K sent you! ;{)}

Ten times better than the last tour. James' voice didn't break, they weren't out of time, and Derrick was great! Got right in front, but the moshing was pissing me off, so I left and wandered aroung the rest of the theater until the last few songs when I went back to the front.

The two solos were unbelievable! I thought the way they played PMU and Metropolis recorded as the boys ran onstage and then they started playing directly after the intros--- no mistakes--- was great! Other than the show being in a crappy part of town (Jim and Ray made some derisive comments about being glad they were leaving (privately, after the show), it was a great night. Too bad we couldn't make it over the pass (snow) to the Fri show in Reno. The place they were playing was a small club (Mike and Mark were joking about not having enough room for both of their sets). If I had know beforehand they were playing Reno, I could've hooked up with a 4WD, but alas...

I'll post my story of getting on the Fates bus a little later...
