There has been dicussion on rec.music.christian about what members
of DT are Christian. Kevin Moore was said to be definetly Christian,
but none of the other members could be positively identified as
Christian. Does anyone know if MP, JP, JY, of JL are Christian?

About forty of us went to the back of the Warfield
and waited by the tourbuses for DT and Fates Warning to
come out. After 1/2 hour Derrick came out to talk to us.
(met a few ytsejam people, too) Really nice. down to Earth
kind of guy. Got him to sign my DT hat. He left, came back
later and told us that the rest of the guys wouldn't be
coming out for 1.5 hours (after- show party with their
    families, plus showering, etc.)

Soon, however, Frank Aresti came out to talk to us (he
signed my hat, too). Really nice guy. My friend
instantly fell in love with him, as she is wont to do,
and after he left, we goaded her into finding him so they
    could talk more.

About an hour later, (there were only 25 of us left
by then), everyone leaves the entrance of the bus
for the exit of the theater: the boys (no, not Rush)
were coming out. Everyone was nice, and I got everyone
to sing my hat (they all had pens in hand ready to give
out signatures). So, after shaking hands with all the
members and telling them what a great show it was, we
started looking for my friend Cassandra. Last we had seen,
she and Frank were heading for the Fates bus.

~1:30 by then and we were ready to head out of The City.
My other friend and I went to the bus to get her attention
through the window (no, her legs weren't sticking out of
it) so then we walk back to the car. A moment later, she comes
running back and tells me that "we can't leave!" and Frank
told her to go get her ride (me).

Well, it wasn't the DT bus (those guys were going to sleep
(all of them except Mike had their wives with them)), but
good enough for me! So we get on the bus and the guys from
Fates were all sitting there. Much to my suprise, Mike was
sitting there chatting as well! *Really* nice guy. Started
talking with him about the list. When we were outside, I had
asked him what the next album was going to sound like. He
told me, "It'll be 'Industrial-Bluegrass'." When I got on the
bus, he asked me "...if I got the message, I asked him "What
'message'?"and he said, "Remember, tell everyone 'Industrial
Bluegrass'." Then he asked me if I drank "On occaision..."
so he and I and a roadie sat there toasted a shot of
Yeagermeister (sp?). Soon after, he left for his bus.
Told him I'd see him the next night if we made it to Reno.
    I could've kicked myself, however, because I didn't ask
him *shit* about the band (I had a fantastic interview
opportunity, if I was tactful). So I asked him how he
could jam on the drums and still smoke. "Well, I smoke
a pack and a half a day, and play for an hour and a half
a day, so it averages out." (or something to that effect)
I also talked to him about bootlegs. I asked him he was
going to score some boots of the current tour, "Definitely,"
    he says.

Later, Ray and Jim decided to go to a local bar for a few
minutes, and since I was sitting my the door, I had them
sign my hat on the way out, Frank kept telling them "Sign
it on the front!" (it was a DT hat), but they wouldn't. I
felt like an idiot asking, but I was polite and so were
they. Just before we left, I got Mark's sig, too (very
intimidating guy) Frank said the same thing, but he signed
it on the back, too. Earlier, Jim and the bassist (forgot
his name, but the other Fates guys were calling him "Bones"
so I got it in my head that that was his name--- put that
in the Fates FAQ, if there is one) started throwing a roll
    of duct tape around and Jim threw it by me, so I threw it back;
he threw it to Bones, and then Mark grabbed it and said,
"Alright, enough games." (I kind of hung my head). (just
before that, Jim and Ray had come back (Ray smokes, too, btw).

Most of the time, though, Frank and my friend Cassandra (Frank
sat across from us) just bullshitted (about their Disney
watches, of all things). Frank kept looking at me as if he
wanted me to say something profound, but I only kind of smiled
and nodded my head as I was following their conversation. I
only talked to each of the guys a little (I'm not very outgoing
anyway). *Next* time will be different, I sure hope Fates will
still be touring with them in the spring when DT comes back, but
    I doubt it)

All in all, there for 1.5 hours total, said goodbye to
everyone and told them we'd see them in Reno later that
night. Never made it, but Cassandra called up to the club and
talked to a roadie who remebered us on the bus and told him
to relay the message to Frank.

I forgot to get the Bones' sig. damn.
(I still have a DT hat with both bands' signatures!)

rule of thumb: always take a fine woman with you to one of
these shows, you never know what might happen.

p.s. Mike asked about When Dream and James Unite. I guess
that's his vote for the name.

well, i hope derek stays with the band, i got to be pretty good friends with
him over the 5 shows i went to. he is the one that asked for the printouts,
and he told me that the next time they tour texas, to find him, and he would
hook me up with whatever i needed (guest list, backstage passes, whatever)
so besides him being a great guy and a very talented musician, i have a
personal interest in him staying with dt :)

if mike portnoy ever gets his hands on this ytsejam, i need an adress to
send his tapes, he wanted to do a trade with me. (not for dt stuff, sorry

i hope noone misunderstood me when i talked about being a fan since wdadu.
i never said anything about new converts not being true fans. i don't think
it matters how long you have known about them or how many bootlegs you own.
the only thing that matters is you love the music and it somehow touches you.
all good music is very emotional, and as long as the music connects with you,
that is all the fan you need to be.

After seeing sooo many people w/o access to the Web directly from
there school, I remembered how I used to do it before they added Lynx
to my system, and I got a direct connection from my room.

As long as you have access to telnet (that should be 99% of you (the
main system at my school (for non-cosci people) didn't have telnet
until a month ago) you can access by telnetting to www.njit.edu and
logging in as www. This worked a few minths ago, so I imagine it
still does. I am not sure of other sites, but I am sure they exist.
Keep in mind that this is text based, and not as well developed as
other text based browsers such as lynx.

    Anyway, this should help...

Well, many of you are posting your personal stories about how you got into Dream Theater, so I figure I may as well do the same...this is taken from the Dream Theater board on AOL; I posted it there on Oct 23. Here it is!

Okay...let's see...the very first Dream Theater song I ever heard was the same as many of yours: Pull Me Under. I heard it on a weekly metal show on a local radio station ("Rockers" on 93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia) shortly after "Images and Words" came out. Since it was pretty late, I was in bed, trying to get to sleep. Luckily, Pull Me Under came on before I drifted off! This was the first I had ever heard of Dream Theater, but I REALLY liked what I heard. I was half-asleep at the time, but decided to write down the band's name in case I forgot it the next morning (a prudent decision--I can't tell you how many times that's happened to me!); I was definitely going to check these guys out. Fast-forward to November of '92. I, my sister, and her boyfriend were on our way to the Tower in Philly to see Suicidal and Megadeth (mostly Suicidal) when she locked her keys in her car. I was pissed! Anyway, by the time we got back into the car, we would have already missed Suicidal, so we decided to ditch the concert. Where we wound up instead was Tower Records. While looking around, I reviewed my mental wish list and remembered Dream Theater. I found "Images and Words" and put it back, choosing instead to purchase the GWAR "Road Behind" EP. I decided to put Dream Theater on my Christmas list. Well, I heard Pull Me Under on that same radio show again before Christmas and was really itching to get it, but decided to wait it out 'til Christmas. I didn't get it for Christmas! So, two days later--that's December 27 for anyone who doesn't know :)--I went down to the local Strawberries and got it. I recognized good old familiar Pull Me Under right away and loved it, but the rest of the album actually disappointed me! (This happens to me a lot the first time I listen to a new album.) I took it out of my tape player and didn't listen to it for nearly a month. It was at that time I figured maybe they were worth another try. I liked it better the second listen, even more the third listen, and so on and so forth. In a day or two, I grew to LOVE this album. From reading the liner notes in "Images and Words", I determined that this was not their first album (I noticed it said, "A very special thanks to all our fans who have written to us throughout the years & have been so patient...We're Back!"). I HAD to find their earlier stuff, but everywhere I looked, they couldn't even order it for me. It didn't occur to me that it might be import only. Anyway, check out this luck: Late in August of '93 I was in that same Strawberries I got "Images and Words" from, looking through the budget section, and what should I find for $2.99 but "When Dream and Day Unite"!! I grabbed it, paid for it, and was off. After growing in such admiration of this band for the past 9 months, it didn't take me long to fall in love with this album!! About a month later, I found out from a friend at school that it was pretty hard to find in this country and usually costed a pretty penny. This only made me appreciate it more! This past June, I picked up "Images and Words: Live in Tokyo" and experienced DT live for the first time. As can be expected, I was floored. In July, I picked out "Dance of Eternity" froma bunch of DT imports (the rest of which I'll get someday) at a local flea market. Finally, August 27th, I arrived at college and was introduced to one of the greatest music shops I've ever set foot in. Since then, they've hooked me up with "Live at the Marquee", "The Majesty Demos", "InstruMENTAL", "When Dream and Day Unite" (on CD finally!), the "Lie" promo single, and of course, "Awake". And so, long-winded though it may have been, that is my history as a Dream Theater fanatic!

    Dear Jammers,

To answer William Wright's question, the virus only concerns AOL members, since files can be attached to AOL letters and not internet letters. << Hello everyone. It seems there is a thread here of folks having to defend their reasons for being a DT fan by saying when they started listening to the band, what albums, boots, etc. they own and so on. There are also others who claim to be "real" or "better" fans based on what DT stuff they own. I say anyone who can get pleasure out of any band, be it musical appreciation, a particular emotion, etc. is a fan. The number of albums you have by them or how many times you've seen them live or whether or not you have their lyrics memorized should be irrelevant. For myself, I like DT for the feeling I get when I listen to their music and I'm a drummer so I admire Portnoy's style. That's it. I *only* have the three studio albums, but that's because my tastes vary widely and I have only so much money to spend on cd's. I'm also not a big collector of anything. I have gotten several of my friends to listen/appreciate DT, and each of them likes something different about the band. I know someone who LOVES them more than me but doesn't have WDADU 'cause he hates Dominici. Is he a poser, not in my opinion. People listen to what they listen to for different, personal reasons, and it's not really for others to judge. Thanks for listening, ALL you DT fans! >>

I was just listening to S&G's greatest hits (I must admit it was a real struggle to put something other than DT in my changer -- and there usually is at least _one_ of them in there most of the time), and I was thinking, I'd bet that DT would do an especially good job of doing a cover of "I am a Rock." Of course, I would expect their version to be much longer, more musically involved, and overall very different and probably better -- much like what Yes did with S&G's "America," I guess. IMO, it would be very much in vein with this current album, tho perhaps not so much with "industrial bluegrass" :) (Was Mike being serious about that?? It would definitely be something to hear!)

    Just a random thought...

Any other Dream covers out there?

Thanks in advance! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Robert and other jammers, This is my first posting to this daily dialog. Please tell me more about Dance of Eternity (both the single disc import and the double disc set you refer to). I would be interested in getting my local record store to order them if you can provide catalog numbers etc. Also, what is Lost in the Sky and InstruMENTAL? I just joined this daily outpouring of info a couple of weeks ago and am trying to get up to speed on some of the early DT stuff that can be obtained legally. What I mean here is as follows: For all of you that create bootleg video and audio tapes of these guys and others, you're infringing on the rights of the band. Now, before you all decide to flame me for getting on your case, let me explain. While I can appreciate the motivation to have as much material as possible, unless the band approves, you're limiting their ability to develop and market the stuff THEY want the public to have. Face it, the only way these guys can survive to make new music for us all, is if they have sufficient revenue coming in from legitimate offerings THEY choose to provide. I'll accept the possibility that this is done solely to increase an individuals portfolio of DT material and that any subsequent duplication for other jammers is done for free to give us all more to enjoy. I hope I'm right about this but what I believe would be more appropriate would be to get the band and/or their label to package more of their early work for general sale (maybe a boxed set with the demos etc.). It's the old supply/demand scenario. The more the label sees a market, the more support they're likely to provide the band (more products, broader marketing of the band, better tours and exposure in larger venues with state of the are lights/sound etc. including creation of tour videos and live CD's). I think this could really help the band breakthrough to a larger audience (which some of you seem to dread). By the way, I fully agree with the comments regarding who is or who isn't a fan of DT. I can't believe some of the stuff I read regarding some people's opinion of who the "real" fans are. I've only known about DT for a year and having always been a fan of progressive rock (in all forms). I have my own band doing original progressive material and I have been awestruck by their musical ability and influenced by them in my songwriting. I have collected as much stuff as is available in my area including WDADU, LATM, IAW:LIT and Awake. I agree that a fan is a fan is a fan. How long has NOTHING to do with it. Anyone that knows how to get more stuff (legitimately), please respond directly to Alvarez1@AppleLink.Apple.Com Thanks for letting me vent! Forgive my cluelessness, but what the hell is "Industrial Bluegrass?" Also, "new album?" I guess we're not talking about the (soon-to-be) much-anticipated EP, but a brand-new studio-recorded album. Is that the deal? If so, that is some GREAT news, man!!!!!! It would just mean that we won't have to wait 3 or 4 years for their next release, that's all!

I just picked up a CD by a band called Rising Power with 17 year old Mike Portnoy on drums. The CD is called Power For The People. It's actually not bad. The production is decent, and the songwriting, while not being very good, is also not horrendous. Mike even sings backgound vocals.

The CD seems to be pretty legit as the sound quality is better than both Majesty and Instru Mental CD's and the price was only 15 dollars. This CD had to have been made from master tapes since the sound is excellent.

BTW- I taped the New Haven show if anyone wants to trade.

Got the promo poster today! Well, I got at least the mailing tube; haven't opened it yet. But -something- arrived from the mighty C-Man.

No more room on the walls.....no room on the ceiling, either. (Really). *sigh* We'll have to sacrifice someone. :)

He meant it as a joke, but he was serious when he told me to tell the list. I asked he and James if they were writing anything for their next studio album. James said "No", but "...a few of the guys were kicking around ideas." Although I think he said that just to satiate me.

As for Mike's "idea" of the style for the next album, there could be a hidden meaning there, but it's something best not discussed among friends, and I think we should leave it at that !>)>

It can all be obtained *legally* (and has been by list members). It was *made* legally in another country. Whether it was *sold* legally, well... > What I mean here is as follows: > > For all of you that create bootleg video and audio tapes of these guys and > others, you're infringing on the rights of the band. I don't understand what the hell the problem is with fans buying boots. Although I know next to nothing about profit margins for bootleg manu- factureres, I seriously doubt they are anything really big. Metallica understands this, and they *encourage* bootlegs of their stuff. Witness: all the soundboard Met. boots that exist and permission of audio/vid taping at a lot of shows. Mike understands this, too. The most dedicated fan base for a band are the ones who collect the boots and _they already have everything the band has put out officially_. > Thanks for letting me vent!
