Hi everyone. I thought you all might enjoy this, I know I laughed my ass
off. Please don't see it as blasphemy ;) the author is a huge DT fan.
    Anyway enjoy!

    Pull My Finger
(lyrics by Shane Carey shane@apunix.com, music by Dream Theater,
    catering by Meatloaf)

    Crust of a pie
    filled with apples and cinnamon
    Sugar high
Drool and juice running down my chin

Three kinds of beef and bologna
A whole bowl of cheese rigatoni and
Every dish gets cleaned off real fast
Every meal as if it could be my last

    Watch th' pictures falling
As I thunder down the hall
I'm on way down to the mall to grab a milkshake
I'll gain seven pounds from one
    Bite of that luscious honey-bun
And what th' hell, I'll wash it all down with some chocolate cake

French toast with butter and jelly
It all goes to my butt or my belly and
Every dish gets cleaned off real fast
Every bite, though, is sure to give me gas

    Pull my finger,
    Pull my finger,
Pull my finger, don't be afraid
I ate so many tacos last night
My gut is feeling hot and tight

    Dust fills my eyes
    Powdered sugar flies everywhere
    Cookie crumbs fly
On th' carpet and in my hair

Fix me a pot of spaghetti
I ate up the last one already
I'll die within th' year at this rate
They'll have to bury me in a piano crate

    Pull my finger,
    Pull my finger,
Pull my finger, don't be afraid
Tentmakers don't make pant in my size
No one I know has bigger thighs

(oh that I could win my weight in french fries)

Well, I don't believe it, but I actually heard Caught In a Web here on KRNA (94.1) in Iowa City, Iowa! I _never_ heard them play Lie, so go figure. Well, it was on their "battle of the new rock 'n' roll" thing, and DT won. I can't remember who they were up against, but it was someone I'd never heard of before.

If there _is_ anyone else on here from the eastern Iowa area, make sure you try and vote for it tomorrow around 9pm-ish (319- 337- 2222); the winner always comes back the next night, or at least until they win 5 in a row. I'm hoping that DT gets a few more nights before they decide to trash it and put it up against Pearl Jam or STP or some other obvious college favorite (it _is_ a college town).

BTW: anyone else heard CIAW on the radio?

Recurring theme #1: Someone asked and a couple digests went by with no answers to this one:

The flaming heart is not a DT invention. It is a universal symbol for the sacred heart of Jesus. It's a very Catholic symbol. I never even knew that until I saw the DT version, and I'm a seminary student! (Protestant, however -the symbol isn't very prevalent in the Lutheran church)

I happen to like the artist's rendition that DT uses more than any other I've seen.

But to those who want to fight over issues with Christianity and influences and DT, remember, a symbol can be just that -a symbol, and the band has made this clear from what I have read -.

Recurring theme #2: I am relatively new to the list - so let me know if this has been discussed a million and two times - but concerning Metropolis, anyone out there familiar with the book and movie by the same name? It was a silent film, then in the 70's someone tinted it (not colorized) and added a metal soundtrack with bands I can't remmebr now. I think Queen was involved. Anyway - the themes in the book and movie seem like they could be the inspiration for some of Metropolis by DT - is this old hat to you all? BTW - this movie was also the inspiration for Madonna's express yourself video. Possibly the only connection one could ever make between Madonna and DT.

    PEACE Andy

Couple of quick things here--first, this talk about where to get tabs of songs. I specifically asked JP at the KC concert how the songbooks were coming along, when they would be out. He said "we are going to put out BOTH I&W AND AWAKE and they should be in the stores early in the year." Cool, huh!

Also, anybody have the old Pantera "Cowboys from Hell" album? Well, dust it off and check out track 6 "Domination". Go to the 3:50 mark and see if it reminds you of anything...! Just thought it was kinda cool.

Speaking of worst openers, a local band called "Pushmonkey" opened up for FW and DT when they came to Houston last month. There were obviously a few local Pushmonkey fans in the crowd trying to incite everyone to get excited, but hip-hop-type funk just doesn't do it for me. Definitely the worst opener I've ever seen.

Then again, with a name like "I Mother Earth", high hopes aren't expected there either....

    Hi!

I've finally got the date for DT's gig in Stockholm, Sweden.

    It's Feb 20th 1995 at Cirkus!

The tickets will be available from mid-Jan. Cirkus is a great venue IMO, takes up to 2000 people I think and the athmosphere is cool, it's an old theater-sort-of. But hey, this is not all! You know what happens the 26th of Feb, same place?

    Queensryche

Those tickets will probably go on sale around the same time as the DT-tix. This means that I get to see DT and QR in less than a weeks time!!! Well, the DT/QR-tour didn't happen but I guess that this is as good! :-/)

    I'm sooooo happy!!!!!

I'm going to see the Dregs at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana, California. We have dinner reservations for the show. If any of you Ytsejammers out there plan on going but don't have dinner reservations yet E-mail me and I'll try to add you on to mine (we're like second or third on the list). We did the same thing for the DT show, started with four people, ended up with nine. So, if this sounds good to you, let me know. If you don't have tickets yet, you can buy them at Ticketmaster and then add on to dinner later.

Anyone here a fan of IQ's 'ever'? Frankly, this was the album I was hoping 'awake' would have been. (and possibly it would have been more like it if KM had taken a larger role in writing) I just picked it up, and it is one of the best albums I have ever heard, rivaling I&W. I like 'awake', but 'balls and chunk' only go so far. Everyone should get 'ever'! comments/reactions welcomed.

    > (I, too, like some alternative stuff). Unfortunately, the whole > alternative movement-- music, lifestyle, philosophy, has become a > sad parody of itself. Someone should tell these people that our > society already went through this juvenile phase of development > thirty years ago.

What's so funny is that alternative "grunge" is on its way out, according to the trend-fuhrers, and "ska" is on its way in. "Ska", as far as I can tell, is a style of music where bands who can't play an instrument to save their fucking LIFE go on stage and wail as fast and as loud as they can, atonally, simplistically, and monotonously. The early manifestations of "ska" are Green Day, NOFX, Operation Ivy, and Hole.

So get your camcorders out and tape your moron friends sitting there singing along to Pearl Scam and the Stoned Temple Pilots, and in two years when they are "heavy, totally-into-it" ska-fanatics (oh, the bandwagon lemmings that they are) you can show them proof that their opinion in music isn't worth shit!

Naturally, I am optomistic about ska coming in. Why? Because its last manifestation was from 1977-1980, and then a really FUN time in Rock came about, the heavy-metal-glam-shred period. Granted, some of the "glam" aspect of it was pretty cheesy, but the MUSIC was FUN. Kiss, Ozzy, Motley Crue, Van Halen (moreso than today), Dokken, etc. I would HOPE that the bands that follow that trend when ska fades out and glam fades back into trendiness, would be better.

And best of all, what followed glam? PROG ROCK!!! 1987-1990 were the best years for Prog, when Satriani, Vai, Lynch, Beach, McAlpine, and all the crew were doing guitar-virtuoso albums. Also you might notice Dream Theater's first album came out then. I predict that Dream Theater will be living legends if Prog comes back, which based on the current dating, should be sometime in 2001-2005. Enjoy them now, meet them now, support them now, so you truly CAN claim to have done so when the whole world decides pay attention to 'em.

Grunge. Hah. Its highlights were "Even Flow", "Wicked Garden", the Heart cover of "Battle of Evermore", and "Outshined".

Ska. HAH!!!! I'll be laughing about this one for a looooong time. It's not too tough to do a B5-A5-E5 "blang" pattern while singing "Butt'n mah lips and close meeeeye eyez! Take me ah-WHEY to paaair o' dice!" Crap, I thought the Stones wore out 3-chord sellout-rock.

The return of glam will be fun, and then the REAL good time will begin for us fans of Rush (who will be like Gods) and Dream Theater.

    > And who is more pretentious than Blind Melon!? (sonsofbitches)

What a flash in the pan they were... just as we thought.

    > > None of my other friends listen to DT, although a couple like Queensryche. > Probably Silent Lucidity, but we *all* had to start somewhere!

I believe it was "Empire" that hooked me, as a friend had played Mindcrime to me to an indifferent reaction. (what was I THINKING???)

I didn't mind I Mother Earth that much. Their jams were pretty cool.

Who all (on the east coast at least), remembers any of the shows on the last tour where N.M.E. Opened? They were *baaaaaaaaad*. I don't think even Firehouse opening for Tesla (which me & my roommate walked through the Patriot Center hallways through until they finished.) was better.... Excuse my French, but how can you fucking say that? Granted, they weren't the best band I've ever heard, but they could lock into a groove bigger than life. Yeah, some of the jams went on a little long. And that percussionist was really fun to watch. Too bad you didn't enjoy it - you'll probably never hear Latin-flavored metal again.

By the way, I may be wrong here, but to whomever mentioned that I&W sold 1 mil lion copies, I think that it was certified gold, not platinum. That's 100,000 - right?

I picked this up on America On Line today. I don't recall seeing it posted here so I thought I'd send it up.

    >PROFILE: DREAM THEATER

Dream Theater Lineup: James LaBrie, vocals; John Petrucci, guitar; John Myung, bass; Mike Portnoy, drums Label: East West Records America Producers: Duane Baron and John Prudell Album: "Awake" First single: "Lie"

    James LaBrie talks about:

First tour: "We did 194 shows in 127 cities and 17 countries. We sold out more than one show in a lot of towns when we toured with our debut album, "Images and Words."

Being the frontman: "I've never studied theater but I took some jazz dancing around the age of 20 years about the same time I was studying opera. I studied opera for four and one half years with Rosemary Patricia Burns who's an incredible teacher and singer herself. I studied "The Mask" which is the Italian way of teaching for the voice. Funny you mention acting because my manager wants to get me into some roles. We'll see. I don't want to just be a walk on. If I was ever going to approach acting I'd want to do something a little classier in a movie. There is this preconceived notion of rock and roller guys who got into movies..just give them a word and they won't screw up."

Signing with East West: "Derek Oliver got us signed and he's our father. He's good ole' Pops. We're playing New York tonight and a ton of people are coming to see us. Lucy Sabini has done incredible things for us too." The recording: "Actually it was eight weeks of recording and then two to three weeks of mixing and mastering. "Images and Words" was recorded, mixed and mastered in eight or nine weeks. Words was only 59 minutes and our new album is 75 minutes long."

Producers: "We all thought that with the new album we'd move on to some new producers. We took our time in deciding who we thought would be best for us. We wanted to get some guys with a track record that sonically could give us a really heavy sound and that's definitely noticable on "Awake". We wrote with the harder sound in mind, more edgy and more agressive. As well, we kept in the classical, jazzy feel which is Dream Theater's signature. What I did differently is the way I've always sung but on "Images" I sang totally clean. I wanted to bring back some of the way I've always sung even before Dream Theater and that is more dimension to the voice. I'm singing low, singing really high, singing clean and raspy which adds more character. There's a lot more character to the voice when you listen to it for the listener."

First record with a trained sounding voice: "I started singing when I was five and I had a teacher through elementary school with me. My father had me singing in a barber shop quartet when I was 12 and 13. My father has a beautiful voice. Throughout my teens I was in rock and roll bands and then at the age of 20 I studied opera. When people listen to this album they really hear the diminsion of my voice. In fact I've been asked if I sing on all the songs on this album. Emotionally the communication comes through really well what I'm feeling inside."

"The Mirror": "When we play this song live people go nuts. When John comes in with the guitar the audience is really with us. The tune is really energetic and raw and people soak it in. I know our next single is "Caught In The Web."

"Caught in the Web": "I really dig this tune. I came up with the concept lyrically and I wrote most of it. John Petrucci came in and wrote the chorus section. If I thought something was weak lyrically I'd speak up but melodically I partook in every song. What I do which is the job of any vocalist is to sit down with the lyricist and have him tell me in very few words what he's getting at on the song even though I generally have a pretty good understanding myself. I always want to hear from the horses mouth and then what I'll do is take that in and sit with it so when it's time for me to really sing that song I can really interpret for the listener even if they didn't understand every word. The listener can still feel it in some sense through the voice. I think that is very important for the vocalist to do that. That's their job."

Length of the songs: "One of the most gratifying things is when I do "Bump in the Sand" or "At The Shore" around shows or just walking through malls is that fans come up and say things like 'I read the lyrics to such and such a song and it was incredible to read and it made me feel so much more in tune with the world or myself. To read it from someone else who was thinking what I'm thinking really makes me feel comfortable.' The fact that we've touched something for them and made them feel better of themselves really is the best compliment in the world." Lyrics: "I think people are paying more attention to lyrics. I think for the most part the industry doesn't give people enough credit. People have to be treated more or less on a cerebral sense. I believe people are being dictated to by shallow lyrical content. There's nothing wrong with that but a lot more people out there especially with the way the world is going is that want something more meaningful said and more realistic.

There's a lot of room for the fun lyrics but I think especially with a band like us it's more on a serious note. We don't want everything taken literally either because then you're missing the gest of the music. It's supposed to be taking you away on a plain of your own so that you can get away from everything."

"A Mind Beside Itself": "That's the trilogy. It's a 20 minute, three song triligy featuring an opening instrumental. We slowly composed it to the point where it is now. What we did, the way we write a lot of our music is in a rehearsal studio and jammed it out. We have a tape running all the time so if we land onto a cool groove or cool section then we take it step by step and build onto until we get to the point where we've completed the idea or message. It takes time. It's was trial and error. For the most part, I've got to tell you that on this album we had so many ideas going on inside each guy individually and then as a band just getting together. We were so ready to go to write new stuff that the excitement and electricity was there just to lend itself to writing. Everything was written before we got together with the producers."

"Voices": "Cultural Revolution is Prix-mo's band. We were working at Devonshire Studios and I had finished my vocal tracks. There's this section that really called for a low, deep, resonant voice so we asked one of the assistant engineers if he knew anyone and he told us about Prix-mo. We had the words written down and he came in and narrated the section in time with the music. He was great we had to give him credit."

Kevin Moore: "He played an important part on this album. He's an incredibly talented person. We saw it coming for a while. We didn't really want to admit it. In retrospect we look back and when we talk now we knew there was something there that wasn't right. For maybe six months Kevin was going in a different direction. His musical direction was very much different from ours. We were more and more separated in our ideas to the point that it was obvious that he had to move on with his stuff. We needed to find someone who was more understanding and in synch with where we're going musically. We're all still great friends and we wish him the best. I talked to him recently and he's doing great. He's in Santa Fe writing music. It's all for the best when you have any negativity within a band sooner or later if it's around long enough it starts to pull everyone else down. We have Derek Sherinian touring with us now and he's a very talented keyboardist. He studied at Berkley School of Music as well and he's working out great. We haven't decided if he'll become a full member or not but we're going to have a keyboard player for a member. Everything is pointing in that direction. Six months down the road after touring that much longer if we still feel the same then he'll then become the new member of Dream Theater."

Stage show: "It's pretty impressive. The lighting and visual aspects of the show are very stimulating as well as the audio which is most important for us."

Favorite track: "My favorite song is "Scarred." I really get to express myself on this one."

The cover: "Once again we all sat down and started thinking conceptually of what we could put into the artist end of things that would lend itself to explaining the album lyrically and musically. It all says "Awake!"

Touring: "It's really going to be great coming through all these different territories and playing new material as well as from "Images and Words." So far the response had been incredible. This new material really lends itself to a lot of energy and excitement off stage. It's really exciting. We're out with a Canadian band called I Mother Earth and they're great. I don't mind supporting my Canadian brothers at all. Half way through the tour we'll pick up Fates Warning for the rest of the tour beginning November 10 in St. Louis.">
