I was wondering if any Bay Area Ytse Jammers are interested in
attending a Dixie Dregs show on the 12/27. I will be in the bay area
during that time and from all I have heard of DD it should be good. I
just checked with BASS and found they have a show in San Fransico on
Dec 27th at Flems regular tickets $20 of 34.95 for ticket dinner and
            reservered seating.

Any one interest please let me know.

            thanks,

Actually, concerning the N.M.E. as opening band to DT last tour, I'm pretty
sure they only opened in Pittsburgh since they are a Pittsburgh band. At least
I'm pretty sure of this. Yeah, I'm almost certain because the drummer went on
to play with another prog-metal band here in the 'burgh.

I found "Ever" to be extremely disappointing. Comparing it to "Awake"
is very misleading--"Ever" is progressive rock and "Awake" is progressive
metal. Since most of the people here seem to be progressive metal first
and progressive rock second, they will probably not enjoy "Ever". If the
fan is primarily a progressive rock fan, they might prefer "Ever".

You might as well compare Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to "Awake", or
compare "Awake" against one of the albums from he-who-was-once-Prince.

If a person is primarily a prog fan, they might like "Ever". Many iQ
fans prefer it. I like the first two albums ("Tales from the Lush Attic"
and "The Wake") to it. I also prefer "Are You Sitting Comfortably?" to
it (which, along with "Nomzamo" had a different vocalist).

If you're looking for iQ fans, you'll have better luck in the
alt.music.progressive newsgroup where some people were blathering
about how wonderful "Ever" was. You might also try the iQ newsgroup.
Even the Marillion newsgroup is, imho, a more appropriate place to
    discuss iQ than here...

Someone posted a bit about similarities from pantara "cowbots from hell and DT. Well go to track 10 "Message in Blood" around :04 and again at 4:28. it reminds me of the drum part from Fortune in lies. the segment in the pantara song only last 4 or 5 seconds but it still sounds an awfully like it.

anybody agree? check it out and let me know if I crazy or not!

Speaking of the former Purple One, did anybody catch his performance on Dave Letterman the other night. This guy can really rock when he wants to! Seems to be a fairly competent guitar player -flashback to junior high- (*Whew* Glad that's over.) If there's one thing that's frustrating beyond all else int his world, it's that it's a royal pain in the ass to find early Rush shows on tape now that they are 21 years in the business. Dream Theater is still young... let's preserve it for the ages. We have a lot of good shows from the USA on tape... we need shows from all the obscure and small European and Japanese cities...

subject: European tour and singles and boots and more...

    Hi,

I've heard that DT will play in Gant (Belgium) with Queensryche the 13th of February. Can anyone confirm it? The "Lie" single has been released in UK. The Cd version features "To live forever" studio version, "Space Dye Vest" album version, and "Another day" live version from the Marquee. The 12" vinyl version features "Lie" and "Space dye vest" + a demo version of "Take the time" and includes a poster edition of the official DT fanzine "Images and words". 2 new boots have been released or are going to be released: 1 Cd "Majestic harmonies" recorded in Stockholm October 27, 93 (FM broadcast) and "New- York 94" that will be a 2 Cds recorded from the Awake Tour. At the moment, I only own "Majestic harmonies" but "New-York 94" should be out at the end of this week. Are they some people in the list that plan to do several dates of the European tour? I would like to do it, but not alone. So if you are interested, email me. I am still interested by DT live and demo tapes trading and I still publish a quaterly 12 pages newsletter entirely dedicated to DT (5 issues available), written in French!

    That's all for now. Bye.

    Stephane Auzilleau auzzy@mails2.entpe.fr

Someone in the list was interested by getting vinyl copies of "I&W" and "Awake". I know where to find them. I tried to email you but I didn't achieve to do it. So if you are still interested, email me.

I enjoyed most of their set as well when they played in NYC, and yes they can really groove. The bass player and the Latin percusssionist had great stage presence, but the vocalist needed something that I just can't put my finger on...maybe a voice instead of screaming incoherently. It did get kinda long-winded after a while though, either because of their playing or the fact that you knew that DT was closer to coming on. I dug their set though.....

Speaking of opening bands, I know that none can compare to Fates music-wise and all, but another band that really impressed me when the opened up for Dream Theater was Damn the Machine. They were tight and grooved very well with excellent two-part harmony vocals. I bought the album (Damn the Machine) the next day and definitely was not disappointed.

Speaking for myself, I would have to say that I really enjoyed I Mother Earth's performance. I really liked their CD, and the live show was even better. The guitarist (his name slips my mind at the moment) had a really cool style, and did a few things I had never thought of doing on guitar, like pop-and-slap tecniques and a wah-slide solo. Plus they had a lot of energy, and the rhythm section was great, particularly Armando Barg, the perc dude. And then it got even better when Mike came out on stage to join Armando on perc. So, the bottom line is, I mother Earth is a personal fave of mine now, and often finds its way into my CD player.

Just to let you all know what other kind of tastes I have, some of my non-DT favorite stuff to listen to is Gwar, Mr. Bungle, Bjork, Korn, and Tori Amos, not to mention lots of solo guitarists (Satch, Vai, Eric Johnson, etc.). In fact (although it may be heresy to say this) Dream Theater is not in my CD player often. I guess I just like soooo much stuff that its hard for one certain CD, or band for that matter, to stay in the CD player for long. Don't get me wrong, though: I really like DT. It's great to listen to and to play guitar along with (although in the guitar department I am woefully inadequate as far as anything but rhythms go).

I even like FW's Inside Out CD, but I was extremely bored with their live show. I saw I Mother Earth "headline" at a local club in San Jose about 6 months ago and I had a pretty good time. I like their album much better than I liked them live, but I still liked it better than FW. I can't understand why people are saying that they suck so bad. I can understand people saying they can't compare to DT (not many bands can), but suck???

:-/ The last sentence was targetted towards fans like you who have voiced an interest in progressive rock--you might like iQ--they're one of the better progressive rock bands that are out today. I am not the definition of prog taste, so I would suggest that if you like other prog rock (as opposed to prog metal) bands such as early Genesis, Yes, or Marillion, that you might enjoy iQ (I personally suggest "The Wake" as a good starting point, but I've been out-voted on that by other iQ fans who seem to prefer either "Tales from the Lush Attic" or "Ever").

On the other hand, if you think Fates Warning, Queensryche, and Metallica are cool and Yes, Genesis, and Marillion are for wimps, then you'll probably hate "Ever". Why? Because, imho, they are different genres of music. There are many people who like different genres, but there are others who concentrate on only one. I've met a guy who has over 1800 prog rock albums (and only one prog metal ep). I've met other people who have large collections that include "everything but country" (yeah, he even had some opera albums).

    You're open minded :) That's good :D

There are some songs that he-who-was-once-prince-and-who-is-now-a-symbol did which I think are ok. I suspect that there are a number of people on this list who like at least one of his songs and probability also dictates that there are people here who like at least one of Michael Jackson's albums. I don't think it's fair to their albums or "Awake" to compare them--you're comparing Apples and Oranges, imho. On the other hand, I can enjoy certain albums more than others....

And if you're wondering which I prefer (MJ he-who-was-purple or DT) the answer should be simple: am I running he-who-was-prince or MJ mailing lists? :D

But along the same lines, my taste in music may be drastically different from yours and the only thing we may have in common is DT. That is cool by me as long as you realize that going out and buying albums that I like will suck for you. :)

And as others have said: "peace". My involvement on this thread was as an individual expressing his taste and was not as an arbiter of public fashion ;)

    Hi jammers,

I've been off the list for some time :( but I'm back :) Life is much more pleasant with the ytsejam mailinglist!!!

It's good to hear that Derek S. is doing a good job as mucisian and has a fine personality.

Some questions remain after reading some digests: 1) What is WDAJU? As I can make up it's a sort of collection from boots put on a CD, right? Do I have to subscribe for this? What will be on this CD? 2) As I can read James doesn't like bootlegs and 'illegal' shirts. How do DT react to the ytsejam shirts? I can imagine that they don't approve the shirts. (Personally, possessing a ytsejam shirt doesn't stop me buying an official DT-shirt.) 3) Could someone (with a backstage pass) ask whether Fates Warning will be opening in Europe? Untill now FW has always cancelled their concerts in Holland :(

Can't wait to see DT :15 february, Utrecht Seems like DT is getting really popular over here: A double concert in Utrecht sold out in 1 day! (James will be pleased to hear this). Besides, Awake receives excellent reviews in our most popular magazines.

    Later,

Are the background vocals on 'Awake' just LaBrie voice-overs?
