You'd have spent a lot on your tape deck if it responded up to 20khz...
but the reason they gave you for not doing high-speed recording is kind of
trivial. The true reason, if you care for quality, for NOT recording at
high speed is the increased rate of phasal shifting and wow and flutter.
Tape is an analog source, therefore has no absolute time code. Only the
finest tape decks can have minimal wow and flutter. The reason for the
increased phase shift is because at higher speeds, the magnetic heads
respond to changes differently, increasing the instabilities of the
magnetic phases on an analog signal.

I know most of you have insane amounts of rare DT stuff, so this may be a worthless message, but for those of you who like me are frustrated with not being able to find import versions of albums and other stuff, pick up a Goldmine magazine. It's full of ads with thousands and thousands of things listed. As I browse, I lok for DT among a few others, and there were a few listings here and there. Goldmine is in newspaper form, and available at bigger newsstands and bookstores.

Hello, it's Babs. In response to Dr. Mosh's question on how AWAKE compares to IAW I feel that they did a really good job. The first track I heard off of AWAKE was Lie and that was via college radio. I was turned off at first, I didn't think that they had continued with the style of a song flowing into another, etc. So I waited for about a month and broke down and bought it. I began to appreciate Lie after hearing how it followed Mirror and then ran into Lifting Shadows Off a Dream. LaBrie's voice capabilities are phenomenal! I can honestly say that I love AWAKE. I feel that DT gave us a wonderful "second time around" - I know that I will catch hell on that one because I know that IAW was not their first, but I consider it to be. Take care fellow ytsejam's. I would like to wish you and any of the DT guys (if they check out the list) a wonderful and safe holiday. Anyone with a difficult family (like mine) hang in there, it's only for a couple of days, eh? -BABS

    Hey guys,

Does anyone think that all the flames and arguments about different bands, singers, musicians, etc results from a lack of anything interesting to discuss? Before Awake came out, everyone was excited and discussing the possible directions DT would take, and when it came out everyone talked about their opinions of it. Then when DT went on tour, people gave reviews, etc. It just seems that when there's a lull in DT info, the flames and discussion of other topics and bands begins.

    Has anyone else observed this?

Someone posted that DT was in a local station's battle of the bands type thing, and beat a cheap ripoff of Blues Traveler, and as a big Blues Traveler fan, I researched it. Turns out it was the Dave Matthews Band, with John Popper of Blues Traveler guesting on harp, thus the remarkable resemblance to himself.

In my humble opinion, putting Dream Theater against the Dave Matthews Band, or Blues Traveler is like comparing chess strategy to quantum physics. They are two entirley different things, both worthwhile in their own areas, but not comparable. I am a HUGE fan of both BT and DT, but sometimes I'm in the mood for one or the other. I'd hate to see people arguing over which is better.

I hate labels and all that, but DT should be pitted against other metal bands, whom they would thrash soundly, exposing them to an audience that needs to hear them - i.e. Bon Jovi, Poison, AC/DC (now there is a vocalist who we can say is definitely inferior to any of DT's members past/present)

    PEACE Andy (PS - are there any other Traveler fans on this net? I know there are many metal and/or progressive purists here, and that's cool, but since the subject has already been brought up, I'd like to hear personally from folks whose tastes range from DT to BT. I would bet though that I may be the only subscriber to both ytsejam and the blues traveler lists. ;-}

I think I & W and Awake are completely different in so many ways. First, I miss the keyboards that were so prevalant in I&W, even though they are there in Awake, the sound is different. The most obvious difference to me is the crunchy heaviness of Awake and the darker lyrics perhaps resulting from the imminent departure of Kevin. Musically, the band is just as complex as ever, particularly in songs like Scarred and Mirror. But Metropolis Part 1 is still a favorite for me musically.

It was I&W that made me a DT fan to begin with, but Awake has an emotional pull that reaches even deeper.

    Just my two cents...

    Happy Holidays all!

Mike P...you were asking about Armando Borg of IME...in the CD liner notes, he is not listed as a member of the band. They do mention his name under 'Additional Musicians' along with Luis Conti.

As for DT airplay, I have heard them twice on the station in Youngstown OH. I believe it was Lie the first time and CiaW the second time. They only had them on *really* late at night both times, but I suppose that's fitting...they play some really awful shit during the day. For that reason, I don't listen to them much, but I decided to try something yesterday. I called the station and requested them. I listened for about 2 hours, and they never played it (I asked for Lie OR Ciaw). Interesting, because it was the same DJ who played CiaW only 2 weeks ago, and when it finished, she says "that's Dream Theater...Wowww !"

Heh... I found that out from a local bbs here in Iowa later on.

Ok, I'm game: who gets to be the "Quantum Physics Band"? (physics grad student talking here :^) )

I agree, but you'll never see that in a market like eastern Iowa, unless someone imports about 500,000 metalheads. Out here, you take what you can get. It's doubly bad, because I went as an undergrad to SUNY Albany (NY), where they had an esp. cool Z-Rock affiliate, and only started listening my last semester of senior year (the spring of 93). Dream Theater was all over Z-Rock then; they played Pull Me Under, TTT, Another Day, and Under a Glass Moon on a regular basis those 3 months, plus even Metropolis a couple of times! All unedited!!

If they play the album version of CIAW around here, I don't care what the reason is, I'll do what I can to hear it played again.

I personally like Blues Traveler; saw 'em 3 times live, even. That's partially why I was upset to hear what I thought was a bad rip-off... I don't subscribe to the BT list, tho
