The D7 has nicer features than the D3 but is not a better unit since it
has a 100hz roll-of on the bottom end of it...

The D3 is still the better unit in my opinion except that the D7 can use
    alkalines...

Well, usually I'm a lurker on this list [although the AOL'ers do know me :)], but I've decided to respond to the "Images and Words" versus "Awake" question...

I can't really choose between either of these albums, although "Awake" seems to be the one to follow me from CD player (home) to CD player (portable), and back again. When the EP comes out in April or so, I suppose it will displace "Awake"...

I&W is a more mellow album. As such, it fits a different mood than "Awake" does.

It may sound surprising to some, but "Awake" had to grow on me. Why? Well, what I first noticed is the very metallic edge on this album. For a long time in my youth, I strongly *disliked* metal - or maybe it was really the "bubblegum metal" I heard on the Top 40 radio stations. I associated the metal/hard rock with what I'd termed "screaming" and heavy bass. What got me beyond my disdain for such music was hearing 93 Rock (a station here in Sacramento) while I was working in the school photography lab in my latter years of high school. But I guess an old part of me winced when "6:00" kicked in for the first time - this wasn't what I expected from Dream Theater!

A couple days later, I decided to try it out again...and again...and again... I was hooked! My husband, the guy who introduced me to Dream Theater, says I've probably listened to it 3X more than he has!

So, why do I like it so much? I love how the melodies from other songs are interwoven... Not that this is the first time DT has done it but, I like the way the samples fit in... The lyrics intrigue me... I love the rhymes in some of the pieces, like "Lie"... I love the segue between "The Mirror" and "Lie"...

Mind you I'm not "musically gifted" (i.e. I don't play any instruments), so my feelings are more of a gut thing about the music.

Amusingly enough, "The Mirror" is my favorite song, a rocker.

An additional comment: Personally, I was dismayed by Babs' comment about considering "Images and Words" the first Dream Theater album. Recently, because I just couldn't get enough Dream Theater, I picked up WDADU. I was not disappointed! While I prefer the vocals of James Labrie, Charlie Dominici has a strong voice. Kevin, John, and Mike also put in excellent performances. (Upon hearing the album for the first time, my husband said, "Kevin lives on!") As was mentioned in Ystejam before, WDADU is a starter album (although I'd love to hear a Majesty demo if I could get my hands on one as well!) and set the stage for the later work. And, yes, I also wonder why the heck is the guy on the cover getting branded?!

well, i got my grandma (yes, my grandmother!) to sew me a few inside pockets into a big flannel shirt, so i just wear a t-shirt, and leave the flannel shirt unbuttoned with the DAT, mics, mic power box, whatever in the pockets. there has only been 2 shows i have gone to that they had metal detectors or patted people down, and i had no trouble getting the stuff in. loose jeans and 2 pairs of underwear is another way to go :) this is sure to get you and your recorder in even with pat downs and metal detectors. just be sure to wear a belt with a buckle, so that gives a reason for the detector to go off.

the other day, i went to film the cranberries, and the were patting everyone down, and had handheld metal detectors. i was able to get in the camcorder, my ext. mic, a tripod, a belt battery pack, an ext. lens, 2 tapes, some electrical tape (for taping the mic somewhere) and some other stuff. i wsa utterly amazed. i waited til after the first band went on, the security guys were getting lazy. i walked back and forth looking for the most lazy looking one, and just went for it. he asked me to empty my pockets, and felt one of them. i brought out the two blank tapes and the lens. he just looked at it stupidly, and said "ok". i was really lucky. he didn't even pat down the side of me with the camcorder. guess it was too far for him to move.

anyone interested in acquiring very good stereo stealth mics for DAT or otherwise, i strongly recommend the core sounds. email len moskowitz at moskowit@panix.com (i think) or check the DAT heads list.

Hello, it's a long time since I posted here last! First of all, I'd like to say "THANK YOU!!!" for all 'jammer I could meet in US. (Tim, Mike, Jason, Steve, Pat...)I really had nice times! Finally I could see the shows for four times in US and one time in Canada(tronto). The shows were *awesome* as you've already read on Ytsejam. I thought DT gave me a great power... (Did anybody see the Manhattan center boot video? I got it a few days ago.) By the way, DT will come to Japan in next Jan. So I think it's our turn to write about DT shows :) Following is the detail of tour: date city/state hall name capacity 1/14/95 Kawasaki/Kanagawa Kawasaki Club Citta 1300 1/16/95 Osaka Osaka Koseinenkin Hall 2300 1/17/95 Osaka Osaka Sankei Hall 1400 1/19/95 Fukuoka Sun Palace 2300 1/21/95 Maihama/Chiba Tokyo Bay NK Hall 5800(!!!) 1/23/95 Shinjuku/Tokyo Tokyo Koseinenkin Hall 2000 1/24/95 Urawa/Saitama Urawa Shi Bunkakaikan 2000 1/25/95 Sendai/Miyagi Izumi T-21 Hall 1450 The show on 24th (Myung's Birthday! :)) in Urawa will be on the TV. (Of course I'll record it on a videotape.) Well, I think I could go at least 4 times for DT shows (I got 6 tickets but I don't sure if I can go all of them because I will be so busy then...:( ).When I see the show, I'll write about them. And I will try to record some shows (1/14, 1/16, 1/17, 1/21, 1/23, 1/24) if it's possible. :) Is anybody interested in tape trading with me? I'll return to my father's house today so I will be able to read all E-mails after 5th Jan. So if you have some questions, and send E-mail me, please wait until 5th or 6th to recieve an answer. Thank you and have a nice new year vacation! *********************************************************************** * " As I awaken from the longest night. " * * Kaoru Kobayashi gch06672@niftyserve.or.jp (from Japan) * ***********************************************************************

p.s. Are there more 'jammer living in Japan? We are planning to get together on 14th Jan., so if you are interested in it, E-mail me privately!

This has probably already been discussed but why did Labrie die his hair blonde. I thought it looked much better dark brown.
