I jsut heard from some guy on a net newgroup that Dream Theater and Candlebox
will be opening for Rush? Has anyone else heard this? I thought that they
were in the studio now? Maybe if the new album comes out in a few months
(yes yes yes YES!!!) they could open for the 2nd half of the tour or something.
I don't think that they wanna keep on touring now. Christ, they have been
touring for like a year and a half at least!!
Let me know whats up!

Manring and Hamm are both solo artists. Hamm has played with Steve Vai, Satch, Vinnie Moore, and various other guitar gods.
Up till his last album, Manring's stuff was technically incredible but (imho) uninteresting -- lots of spacey new age flutes and such. His new album Thonk, however, promises to be a complete turnaround. I've heard a cut from it, "Big Fungus," recorded with Herb from Primus, and it burns. Multiple bass parts (probably played simultaneously on 2 or more Zon basses), distorted guitar-sounding tones, lots of slap & tap, and guest spots by Alex Skolnick & other capable guitarists. Release date is 1 Feb.

maybe they're just pulling a Trent Reznor and putting off the album even longer...

If there are no solos or improvisions at all, the only reason to go to a live show would be to hear how good they could play the stuff live. And there would be NO market for CDs or videos or anything. I am more impressed by things like Bombay Vindaloo and Mike's drum solo than merely the playing of songs (although I enjoy the songs, also). It shows that they can do more than just write great songs; it shows their talent!

Candlebox will be opening for the Austin show, I believe. As for DT, we can only hope!!! The boys are still babes, I think they can extend their tour, especially since they won't have to play as long a show if the open.

~ Stu Hamm plays live for Satriani. (I'm not sure about his studio work). Hamm also has a few solo albums out that I have seen. If you ever get a chance to see him live, do it!

I personally think solos are BORING!!!
And the best proof if this...check out Van Halen's live CD...the solos take something like 20-30 minutes!!! This could've been a one CD set or a hell of lot more songs could've been added.
The only solo that ever caught my attention was Rik Emmet of Triumph...it wasn't just a standard guitar solo. It was more like an instrumental without the rest of the band.

Both Hamm and Mannring are solo artists.
Mannring has three albums (I think three) on Windham Hill. He does an awesome tapping rendition of 'Purple Haze' on one of them.
Hamm did two tours with Joe Satriani (where he really got his reputation). He also went to Berklee with Steve Vai and played all over Vai's Flexible and Passion and Warfare albums. He has three solo albums of his own, the first of which is kind of jazzy and may not appeal to everyone. The second two rock, though. Both feature Harry K. Cody of Shotgun Messiah on guitar - he is incredibly underrated and does his best work on both of these. The last album also features some wicked playing by Eric Johnson on two tracks.
Great stuff if you love bass as much as me.

I'm new to the list; I have the FAQ off of alt.r-n-r.metal.progressive, but I thought I'd scan past messages before spouting off about something. Has anyone been archiving?

Candlebox is confirmed as the first opener. No firm word on any DT openings.
> I thought that they were in the studio now?
Either they're off, or still touring Europe, according to the fan club.
