No, I didn't forget... all bands will be covered that we find information
for... of course it won't be a comprehensive newsletter, it'll just have
pointers and tid-bits like release dates, new release announcements, info
on bands that are current, such as tours (maybe tour dates), recording
process (if they are recording or not), rumors (every rag has these!), etc
    ,etc...

    Ciao!

I was driving home last friday afternoon and heard Pull Me Under on the local radio. When the song ended, the dj babbled something about the new album and said they might have "a new Dream Theater song next week" (which actually means THIS week). Does that mean they will be getting a demo stuff? (the radio station was 102.1 kioz in San Diego)

    Thanks, Kinga

BZZZZZZZZZ. Thank you for playing 'I've never seen LiT and never seen TtT done with GC on chorus.' The former has James (wisely) deferring to the audience to sing the chorus, and GC did a respectabe job of it as well. Besides, TtT has some of the most wicked Petrucci/Moore interplay going.

If you want to talk weak live songs, how about Glass Moon? Which upsets me all the more since it's my favorite DT song next to LtL.

Doc, I think the newletter is a great idea, but I don't think it could be limited to just news about bands (well, maybe it might). Would it also include reviews? If it did, there would probably also need to be room for people to express counter opinions and the whole thing would get messy. My vote would be just for hard news - keeping everything on the positive side.

I was reading the latest copy of Guitar for the Practicing Musician the other day, and saw something that might interest you all. Guitar's third compilation CD of various guitarists is coming out, and Dream Theater is one of the artists listed! Usually Guitar's albums contain unreleased songs by people like Nuno Bettencourt & other guitarists. The last one had a reworked Fates song, so either this is an instrumental, a new song, or maybe a reworked something. I don't know much about it, however.

Anyone know anything? I'm going to call Guitar recordings tomorrow and order it...

Here are some of my opinions on DT as a live band. DT is a relatively inexperienced band when it comes to live shows. Their overall mix is still not very consistent throughout the show. They seem kinda mechanical a lot... Partly because of the timing and complexity of their music and partly because they are not too experienced live I think, if you take bands in the same genre like Fates Warning, Rush, you can see that they are very natural in their live performances and seem to click a lot better on their timing cues... Then you have bands like Iron Maiden which playing live is like better than on the album, the mix is superior (partly because they own their own sound system and use their own sound people). But alas, I'm sure we'll see great improvement in DT's live performance as time goes on.

As a side note: I was VERY dissapointed in Rush's mix during the last tour... it was very muddy...

That's all it's going to be, hard info... release dates, tour dates, band happenings (if they are recording, etc)...

Hi, First, here is some info about what these books really are. Well, there are two books, one for WDADU, the other for I&W. They are not for the complete albums though. WDADU misses Light Fuse and Get Away, also The Ones who Help to Set the Sun. I&W misses Learning to Live (bummer). However, for all the tracks they do have, they are complete transcriptions, guitar, bass, drums, keys and vocals. I play guitar and can say that the parts are pretty good, I like to refinger some of it (Metropolis) and there are errors (to my ear) and mismatches between tab and standard notation but these are niggles and I can now attempt most stuff. Japanese scores in general are better layed out than the U.S. ones where it can be very difficult to figure out fills and rhythm figures notated in shorthand above the staves. The bass has some solos - Ytse Jam and not others - AFIL. Only 4 Strings are on the bass tab - I'm sure a lot must get missed out. The keyboard stuff seems good but I don't play it - maybe I should - maybe I should get the guitar parts better first though :-) For me, the stuff is great.

How to get 'em? Well, its going to be tough - here are the ISBN nos : WDADU: ISBN 4-401-34751-X C0073 P2987E I&W : ISBN 4-401-34738-2 C0073 P2987E The last is the price in Yen - $30.26 at 98.7 (today's rate). The publisher is Shinko Music Pub. Co. Ltd.

The best way must be to go to a Japanese bookstore in the U.S. and order them. If people can get this to work (despite the 'Japan only') signs, this is great because I can then tell everyone about all the other books here with an easy way of getting them. I have been told that the price for ordering through a bookshop is likely to be at least double the original Yen price.

I got a friend of mine (thank you Kazuko) to help with the bookshopinfo. Kinokunia (big shop) refuses to deal with foreign book ordering from this side. It might be better from the U.S. side. This is worth investigating. Maruzen (technical bookshop) says they are too understaffed to handle individual claims but they will do this for libraries or organisations somehow related to Japan. Both of these could be approaches for bogus organisation set ups ("Japan music friendship club" etc.). This company will accept faxed orders (inquiries?) in English, here are its details: Maruzen Co. Ltd. Export Dept, P.O. Box 5050 Tokyo Intl Tokyo 100-31, Japan Fax 03-3274-2270 (drop 1st 0 from outside Japan).

Ok - the last resort - I can mail stuff to people. I mentioned before a price of $50 per book. This is probably way to cheap. I am only guessing at the cost of the postage and hopefully I am not dicking myself over here. Also I would like people at least have a go at other methods before resorting to me. I can only buy books at weekends when the post office is shut and then I have to carry them into work etc. blah. whinge. etc. I would not be doing this for the cash (I don't need it - I might earn a beer per book in Japan prices), just to help out desperate people. If a Petrucci transcription becomes reality, then it would be better than this - but I&W only? (Afterlife has a great riff). Sorry to be sounding so negative about this - I would love to say - sure I'll do it - and really cheap too, but I want to avoid the situation where I spend all my free time doing this. Under 20 copies is probably ok. How many people are there on this list? I've never used them but I've heard (thanks James) that International Money Orders are the solution to the financial part of this. If anybody has any better ideas (come visit?) or comments or questions or anything, I'll be happy to help. Transcription availability is one of the reasons I'm in Japan as I am a serious addict. Oh yes, on average U.S. transcriptions are more accurate than the Japanese ones, but less easy to play. Some of my favorite albums I have both to see the differences. If a Petrucci I&W comes out, I'll get it on one of my trips home. Also, obviously, all commentary is in Japanese (useless to me).

    Martin.

No .sig whatever as I am using an IBM mainframe email system that still has to move into this century.

Yeah, try Towers definitely. I just picked up the Spectre Within on Sunday. The funny thing is that I (actually my girl friend) found it on the Imports section, but it's a really a 1994 Metal Blade reissue that cost me 11.95 without taxes. Pretty cool.

As for the album, I'm probably not the first to say it, but they sound a hella like Iron Maiden, especially the drums sound like the way Nicko (McBrain) plays it! Pretty amazing performance from Arch. I originally rule him off as a bad singer because of the bad production in Awaken the Guardian (I have the tape :( ) but here he sounds incredible. He can hold a note!

I still, though, like both singers. They suit their times.

Hi... I was just wondering... did any of you get postcards from Metal Blade announcing Inside Out? I just got a card in the mail today (I would have had it alot sooner, but it was sent to my school address, so it had to get forwarded here)... I have _NO_ idea how I got on their mailing list... I am just wondering if anyone knows how I got there... (I don't belong to any record clubs, fan clubs, etc... I have once sent a letter to the DT fan club, but have not joined yet...) Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here got the card, or had any idea how they got names...

Greetings to all DT Fans! First of all this goes out to all the people who have been complaining about James' voice on LitS cd. You say that it's hard on James' voice and I think one person said that he can't carry the harmonies live. Well what I want to say is that why does the song need to sound the same as the studio album!! That's the purpose of playing live it's not supposed to sound exactly the same!! That's why I like live music in that it doesn't sound the same! I wouldn't want to buy a live album if it sounded the same. I want a live album to have different versions of the song off the studio album, maybe improvise a little. That's what really shows a bands creativity and versitility! Well that's all I want to say about that! No flames please it's just my 2 cents.

On the topic of the LiT video. I finally picked it up this weekend and It is awesome. I've never seen DT live, so this is a good temporary substitute! Some of the guitar work is totally amazing. Actually everything is amazing!

I recently read a post mentioning Crimson Glory, and yesterday I saw a copy of their tape, but passed it up because I knew nothing about this band. Should I have picked up this album?

Secondly, I've started receiving tapes and promotional material from bands, such as Mercury Rising, Devine Regale, and Inferno. The stuff I've heard so far has been great, but I'm actually surprised that more bands haven't taken advantage of my offer. So I just wanted to remind everyone for the last time (cuz I know that those of you not in bands are getting sick of reading this) that I am accepting any quality material - signed or unsigned - to play on University of Pittsburgh radio during my metal show. The music scene here isn't L.A., but it isn't dead either. Also, if I get the time, I plan on reviewing the material sent to me, so bands can use the review of a college radio station rep. in their promo package. If you're not in a band, take my address anyway and pass it on to any band that you go see. I'm hungry for unheard of material, and I'm always dying to help the local-underground music scene. So if you're in a band, don't pass up this opportunity for free exposure, it's usually not this easy (I know, I did it for 4 years).
