Is there a DT newsgroup or what? My newsreader automatically
scans for new groups and lists them when I log on, but I
haven't found it when I've searched for it either.

Yes, I agree, its a great debut!
It got a well recognized start here in germany...good ratings.
often also compared to rush (think of the drums with the many breaks),
also interesting with the long melodic sections within the songs, that
remains me of marillion, and ENCHANTs debut was party produced by
Marillions Steve Rothery.
Its not as hard as DT or usual releated stuff...but i can recommend it
100% to anybody who loves the music of DT AND Rush AND Marillion (a bit)

galactic cowboys also appeared on the king's x "faith hope love" album,
credited with additional vocals on "mr. wilson". king's x and galactic
cowboys are very good friends, since both are based in houston, and they
used to share the same manager (sam taylor) and the same studio (rivendell
studios in houston). it is not a coincidence that of the 10+ times i have
seen king's x, galactic cowboys have opened for them about half the time.
first time was dec '90, in houston, at the tower theater, before the galactic
cowboys were even signed to geffen.

it is about time someone else on this list mentioned helstar!! :) another
truly great houston band. nosferatu came out in '89 i think. they have another
cd called "a distant thunder" and at least a couple of albums before that,
(not available on disc). they broke up, but recently got back together.
in case anyone is interested in them, i have two of their "nosferatu" tour
shows on video recorded in houston. always available for trade...
in case anyone cares, my email will be changing in three weeks back to school.

Just sth I saw this morning in a magazine. James bday was on May
5th, he just turned 31, and Kevin's on the 21st, he turns 23 ( or
sth close to these :) )
They also asked a bunch of members of several groups ( the cool
thing DT was listed on the cover) what the stupidest suggestion that
someone gave to them was. The funniest ones were Kevin's and Mike's
(suprise suprise). Kevin said that someone told him to learn to
play less keys and he'll go far... and Mike gave an ironic comment
about Mechanic, that they told them to sign with them and not be
afraid because they would be in good hands !!

the point is, 45 minutes is not *nearly* enough time for DT. And after
DT, QR (or anyone else for that matter) would be a huge letdown. I would
go to see the show, but I'd probably leave after DT...

Well, I would like them to be successful...but I prefer the smaller
venues. Like to see them in clubs a few more times before they get
huge...
I think they'll retain their integrity. If the music changes, it
wouldn't be due to commercial success...it'll be because they've grown
tired of the complexity. Hope it never happens. Bands tend to suck when
they do that. (Metallica, Genesis...the list is long and distinguished.)

It offends my sense of justice that other bands with nowhere near as much technical proficiency as DT make it huge while they continue in a 'medium-size club' mode.....if anyone out there in music today deserves some attention and bucks, it's DT. But you're right; if they ever get the 'label push' they deserve, we'll have to contend with arena shows, not as intimate as a club, and hordes of new fans.
I can live with that, I guess. :)

Well, that's what their label would be banking on, really. After a few months opening for Queensryche, DT would probably be able to go on to a headlining tour of their own.
As for a QR/DT show; I'd happily pay $55 for tickets. Two fantastic bands. QR's Empire show was one of the best live shows I've EVER seen.

Good question!!
I think they can only because it HAS been done, albeit rarely. It seems like we're always waiting to see if anyone can do it again, since it just about never happens. Yes sold out. Floyd sold out (if you can listen to their last two albums without admitting it, you're living in denial, even though Learning to Fly kicks ass). Metallica sold out. Queensryche, in a way, did, and in a way, didn't. How Queensryche treats their next album will tell us their direction. Because Empire was written and recorded when the Ryche were NOT commercially successful. Above all, Rush has maintained every single scrap of integrity they had. They didn't sell out and probably never will. Not a single one of Rush's albums has gone over to pop, even though the massive volume of sales to the rock crowd alone had them selling out week-long stands at Radio City and Wembley back in the early 80's. Even "new Rush" is non-commercial.
I hope Dream Theater can do it. Everything that has happened to DT up until how has mirrored Rush in almost scary ways. Their first album was semi-popular. They replaced a member. Their second album, which expanded thematically and musically, was a hit. Their third promises to be heavily thematic and conceptual. Anyone who cannot see the parallels to Rush, Fly By Night, and Caress of Steel must be blind. The difference? We hope DT won't be broke and in debt on their third tour like Rush was. But even if they are, and they follow the pattern, DT's fourth album will be their 2112, and it will quite literally knock us to the ground.
