    Subject: surround sound

Yes I have a Dolby Surround system and I really like to just listen
to the surround sound channels sometimes. I turn off the front main speakers
and just listen to the rears. Take the Time has lots of cool parts.
The 1st is at the begin right around the "Just let me catch my breath" part,
just up to the "I think it time for a change". You can only here John P.'s
little funky guitar part coming through the rear channel, its cool.

Another one I can think of in TtT, is during the quite part, "Close my eyes,
let the water rise around me", you can here Kevins piano really well in the
surround speaker, alot of cool little parts you can't normally here.

Thats all of the DT surround stuff I can think, but I know that on many discs,
you can here extra background vocals, ie, not the lead singer, but maybe
other guys in the band, or maybe the lead singer doing a harmony. A good
example of this the the Mathew Sweat album, Girlfriend. Also, there is
a little bit on Pearl Jams, 10, the main thing I remember is background
    vocals on Even Flow.

Extremes last album, III Sides to Every Story, is loaded with surround stuff.
Alot of times, during a guitar solo, you will just here Nuno doing a rhythm
guitar part through the surround channel.

You should really check this stuff out if you have a surround sound stereo.

    See ya!

BTW - Is Lost in the Sky worth $50??

    Subject: X vs Y

I'm too growing tired of the X vs Y discussion, but I feel that I have to
    state my opinion:

John vs Alex: I'm not a guitarist so I'm therefore not an expert on this case,
but nevertheless I think that Alex overall is a better musician
(he has got the experience of 20 years+ of playing) and has more
than John developed a style of his own. (Ok, he's not a Jimmy
Page but still one of the great.) John is probably better
technically and I think that with some more years experience,
he will be able to create a style of his own and become one of
the greatest. Now, whenever I hear certain solos, I'm just
thinkin' about Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.

John vs Geddy: I think that the same goes for this one. While Geddy through
his style and sound! has made himself famous, John tends to
pass as quite anonymous but with great technical skills.
(I think that his sound though is the best for DT, I would not
like to have DT with Rick-sound. BTW what happened when they
recorded WDaDU, you can hear the bass but it's not much bass!
Didn't Terry Date produce Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden, the
                   heaviest album of 1991?)

James vs Geddy: Two different styles! Though none of them sounds very good at
very high-pitched parts. Sometimes live, James seems to just
yell for the sake of it. Settle down, don't soil your pants!
James has got power, and that's his strength as opposed to
Charlie ('I am the killing ...haaaaaaa' :-U) Dominici, but
as we all know James can also do Another Day-stuff better than
most guys. Geddy's got more of an original style.

Kevin vs Geddy: Kevin's a real keyboard-player and one of the best. 'Nuff said!

Mike vs Neil: Sorry, Neil IS God. Mike is so far doing very well, but if you
listen to his solos, many things are similar to what Neil's done.

Don't flame me! I know I'm a dick already! These were just my opinions, not
my humble opinions though. Remember, DT have just released two albums, they're
just warming up! For a warm-up, this must be the warm-up of the century!
I hope and think that with the age and experience and some albums more, they
will rise to the absolute top of musical excellence as well as finding their
style both as a band and individually. You can't expect them to have done that
by just two albums! Let's return to this discussion in about 15 years, then
    who knows what's happened.....

    Bye for now!

Stone Temple Pilots will release their latest, "Purple", on June 7th. A limited
edition vinyl version will be released prior to that date. The band will soon
hit the road in support of the new collection with the Meat Puppets confirmed as
    openers.

I've been listening to an advance cassette of this album for the past four days
CONSTANTLY. It is truly amazing how good this band is. Songs are:

    Meatplow
    Vaseline
    Lounge Fly*
    Interstate Love Song*
    Still Remains*
    Pretty Penny**
    Silvergun Superman***
    Big Empty****
    Unglued
    Army Ants
    Kitchenware And Candy Bars

    * These songs will take you to another dimension
    ** Consider this STP's acoustic/Led Zep III-like masterpiece
*** You will NOT believe the guitar sounds coming out of this future classic

little better with Dolby Pro Logic turned on... I can't be sure, but
it probably is encoded with Pro Logic...

Peart and Mike have fundamentally two different drumming styles... you can't really say which guy is better or worse. The big misconception in music is that it is a competition, well, it's not... it's a matter of taste and style... two highly subjective components involved.

Where Peart is definitely a rock/metal oriented style, Portnoy is a metal/jazz oriented style which I usually classify as "new progressive rock drumming" which is more along the lines of Mark Zonders (Fates Warning) than Peart. Another drummer which is more along the veins is Vinnie Caluta (Sting) and Dave Weckle (Chick Corea).

I just got Moon Bubbles, and I think Labrie was kinda funny (nobody in the audience agrees with me it sounded like though). After the first song, Metropolis, Labrie says: "We're gonna keep it going here with the next album, this is the title track off of this one... Just kidding..." He then chuckled. Only a few ppl in the audience chuckled though. Hmmm.. I thought it was pretty amuzing though. Chris

Sorry, but I must laugh at you when I hear you saying that Portnoy's style is similar to Dave Weckl's. I cringe just thinking about someone raising Mike's skill to the levels of Weckl. I've played drums for seven years and have studied many diffenent styles of percussion. The fundamentals of jazz music are so much more difficult than what Portnoy does that... sorry I can't collect my thoughts. Did you do this just to raise a discussion. I can't believe anyone confident enough about their posting would say such an absurd statement. On top of all of the above, I would say that Peart is more of a jazz drummer than Portnoy (listen to some old Rush, not the new schtuff). Portnoy is pretty basic when it comes to dynamics and feel. It is much easier to get a Portnoy part to sound correct than to get some older Peart parts to sound correct. And if anyone even bothers to try to figure out a Weckl part, Peart and Portnoy should worship that person.

If James didn't have poor diction, there wouldn't be a bunch of guesses in the lyrics to "A Change of Seasons..."

On "LATM" did he say, "he said we both will be kearo's?"

Still, recorded James is amazing. Live James has too much screaming. Is screaming the vocalist equvilent of a guitar solo?
