Well, I personally don't think that Dream Theater sounds at all
like King Crimson. King Crimson has a more experimental sound
compared to the more 'standard' progressive metal sound of DT. I also
think that KC is more inconsistent in quality, whereas I love
basically every DT song (0f course, KC has about 12 albums so that may
be unfair). There are some similarities though: Both bands play
complex music, full of time changes and dynamics. Both have a
pretty heavy sound, though DT is more like metal than KC. King Crimson
also has a fantastic drummer (in their latest incarnation) who you
have probably heard of: Bill Bruford. He is especially cool on
    "Discipline".
As for recommendations, I would first recommend "Discipline"
since it one of the more accessible KC albums, and it is a strong
album overall. If you want to try earlier KC, then you may want to
start with "Red". If you want their earliest stuff, then start with
their first one "In the Court of the Crimson King". The three periods
of KC are very different from each other, so if possible, listen to the
    album before you buy it.
I like King Crimson, but I have to be in the right mood for
their sound. "Discipline" is their only album that I listen to very
    often.

Another band that I actually like better than KC, but is along
those lines (but with a bit more metal edge) is Anglagard. They are
from Sweden and have just one album: "Hybris". This is a wonderful
album with very cool dymanics and a *fantastic* drummer. The drummer
(Mattias Olsson) is constantly doing interesting rhythms (not much
    double-bassing like DT's Mike P. though) -- I love it!
You can order this CD from Ranjit by sending email to:
ranjit@netcom.com. I doubt you'll find it anywhere else unless it
is a store that deals specifically in progressive music imports.
Speaking of Sweden, there is also another band from there
called Anekdoten who sound (in my ears) a bit like Anglagard, but have
a much more standard metal sound. I imagine that many people who like
DT would also like Anekdoten since they have cool dynamics and changing
time signatures. They don't have the amazing guitar runs or quite
the complex rhythms as DT though. Still, I really love their album
"Vemod". It can be ordered from Ranjit too. I've been listening to
"Hybris" and "Vemod" almost as much as my DT albums lately. :-)

I am now awaiting my copy of Dance of Eternity from Ranjit
with baited breath... I can't wait to hear "Change of Seasons"! :-)
BTW, if you have other questions about these bands, or other
    recommendations, just ask.

                                    Steve

Hello All! I just started receiving YTSEJAM a couple of weeks ago and I think it is fabulous! I used to suscribe to TNMS, but I didn't like it too much. I don't mean to be judgemental (yeah, right) but the people on TNMS seem to me to have too much time on their hands. Anyone that reads TNMS will understand what I mean. Ok, it's time for my own little Dream Theater story. I was watching Mtv one fine day and I saw a video. This video was different. Instead of the usual Mtv fluff band, this band had talent. While watching the video and listening to the music & lyrics, other bands started popping in my head. Metallica, Rush, Styx, Yes, Queensryche and Iron Maiden. I was blown away! I saw the name of the band at the end of the video...Dream Theater. I found a friend that had I&W and I borrowed it. What happened next, you ask? I wasn't impressed. The songs after track 1 were very different in style from the one I had heard. The music was too...busy, for lack of a better word. So, I gave I&W back and went about my business. A couple of months later I was watching Mtv again (I apologise) and I saw another video...Take The Time. Again, I was blown away. I told myself that if I could find one more reason to buy I&W, I would. I saw an interview with the guitarist. In this interview Pricky Rachtman asked him about "Metropolis" and said, and I quote, "What's the deal?" John's reply was, "I was heavily influenced by Iron Maiden." Iron Maiden is my favorite group and has been since 1982. When I heard this I went out and bought I&W immeadiatly (sp?). I currently await DT's new album like a kid on Christmas Eve. Now I have a question. Does anyone out there see Iron Maiden's influence as much as I do and as much as John claims? ****************************************************************************** csimmns@whale.st.usm.edu "Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?" irnmdn@aol.com "I think so, Brain, but burlap chafes me so." ******************************************************************************

Speaking as a Crimson fan (since 1971), I would recommend them to any DT fan, especially the early 70's incarnation (Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, David Cross, and John Wetton) which are responsible for the albums Lark's Tongue in Aspic, Starless & Bible Black, and Red. All of these albums feature Bill Bruford on drums during (imho) his peak years. LTIA also features a second persussionist, Jamie Muir. There is also a 4 CD box set freaturing live performances of this line-up.

A later incarnation in the early 80's (Fripp, Bruford, Tony Levin, and Adrian Belew) also put out some interesting stuff, particularly wrt. percussion. Sample the album Discipline first, if you have a choice, followed by Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair. These albums, in general, are much more melodic due to Belew's influence, but still contain complex rhytmic patterns and time signatures.

BTW, a new lineup is allegedly at work in the studio now preparing tunes for a fall release. Another reason '94 should be a great year for music.

I would choose either Dance of Eternity (2CD) or Lost in the Sky (2CD) if I could only have one live album by the group. I'm still looking for the Majesty demos in case someone wants to trade.

No, I'm not sorry that Dream Theater are better musicians than Rush. I used to listen to nothing but Rush, but Dream Theater is more like what I'm into...

What I'm saying is that I don't want DT to be like Rush... I want them to stay the way they are. Don't read so much into it..
