Hey all, just had some things floating around by head that I had to let
    out...

    1) LIE video: Petrucci looks like Alice Cooper during the guitar solo.
(Good grief, was that part on FWD too or can he really move his
        fingers that fast?)
    2) LIE video: It's hard for poor John M. to look cool when one plays
a bass that damn big! (No flames, please; I play bass and I can't
        even count to six!)
    3) James really DOES look like Fabio in the band pic from the CD!

Overall, I thought the video wasn't too bad. The rest of that HBB made
me sick. What happened to music? Might as well call HBB 'Alternative
    Nation' also.

Ricky R. is an idiot. He shouldn't interrupt his guests.

    Noodles!
    Glenn

Ok, this is something new... my girlfriend just came down with pnemonia
(sp?)... as a result, I have two tickets for Chicago's DT show at the VIC for
sale. Ticketmaster price: $20.50 each. Sale price: $8.00 each.

Problem: I'm in Iowa City, and the concert is on Saturday. If you want them &
can come by to get them, great. If you want to try and do it by mail, you
probably have to use overnight mail (& so do I) to get them on time. I'm
unwilling to send them to someone until I get the money from them first (I'm
    from NY originally :^) )....

OK, this is for all of you who love Awake, and have all the prog metal
you can get your hands on, or for those of you who are expanding your
listening base, here are some prog-metal albums you might like:

    Group Title Medium Sounds Like
    ----- ----- ------ -----------
Anekdoten Vemod CD King Crimson & Dream Theater
Black Jester Welcome to the Moon- CD Dream Theater & Marillion
                    light Circus (great disk)
Cathedral There in the Shadows CD Fate's Warning (Adler)
Cynic Focus CD Death Metal with Jazz Influence
Divine Regale Horizons / EP CD Empire Queensryche & Rush EX
Early Warning The Hero's Dream Tape Good, Solid Metal, Fate's mb
Enchant Conscience / Demos Tape King's X, Marillion
Inferno Psychic Distance Tape Dream Theater with less polish
Lethal Programmed CD Warning era Queensryche
Magellan Hour of Restoration Tape Dream Theater and Yes
Mastermind Brainstorm CD ELP on steriods (MIDI guitar)
Mercury Rising Mercury Rising / EP Tape Iron Maiden, Rush, Queensryche
P.O.A Threshold of Pain / EP Tape Megadeth, Old Metallica
Savatage Sirens/Dungeons CD Megadeth with something lighter

Here go the reviews, if you need help finding any of these that interest
you, mail me and I'll give you the addresses I have:

Anekdoten is a very Red era King Crimson type band with some harder
elements. The Swedish group does a variety of tempo and time sig changes
and are adept musicians. IMO the highlght of the album is their song,
The Old Man and the Sea which features some fabulous guitar.

Black Jester is a band that I have raved about before. They have the
power and musical prowess of Dream Theater with lots of Dynamic changes
and songwriting in the vien of Marillion.

Cathedral (not the UK metal band) sounds similar to new Fate's and
Marillion. The highlight of their "There in the Shadows" disk is
Renfield, the story of the madman from Stoker's Dracula. One of my
    personal favorite songs.

Cynic is a band that most of you have probably heard of. Musically they
are one of the most powerful prog metal bands in that they combine Jazz
to heavy metal for a unique sound. The thing that will make or break
Focus for you is whether or not you can handle death grunting which is
present on this album. These sounds convey anger, but I have always been
one to desire anger in the spoken lyric, not the animal growl. On the
next album this band is suppose to drop the growing, so keep an eye on
them, they have the potential to give Dream Theater a running for most
    popular Prog Metal band.

Divine Regale is a band similar to Rush, Queensryche and DT in sound, you
can definitely tell that they are fans of these bands. They still have
their own style, with a singer that reminds me of Jon Anderson (Yes, high
voice) or Crimson Glory's vocalist. Underworld is a really dark fantasy
type song, and the other songs on the EP impress me.

    More later.....

                                                    Mike

Forgive me if this has already been posted - I'm WAAAYY behind on reading the digest. For anyone interested in what all the guy's look like in tuxses, check out the Jan. issue of Metal Edge magazine (the closest thing rock music has to a tabloid). There are about two pages of b/w photos from Mike's wedding, if you're into that sort of thing. BTW, Mike's wife is a very attractive woman - what the hell could he possibly want to spend his life on the road for?

(I know this is the DT list, but I HAVE to post this FW info somewhere... :) (please do not do a group reply if I am sending you this as a CC)

Well, last night was the Fates show in Providence, and I am pumped... First off, I not only got to meet the band, but I was in their tour bus!!! Anyway, more on that later...

Let's see... lots of news... I was talking to their t-shirt guy at the beginning of the show, who, I was surprised to see later on, became their drum tech... He told me that they are NOT doing a double headline with DT, rather they are ONLY opening for DT starting in St. Louis. They will NOT be doing a full set list, rather only 4 or 5 songs... (I forget if it was the t-shirt/drum tech who told me this or someone else...) The problems are contractually related, so it appears that they will only be opening, and IME is out starting in St. Louis.

Fates did do a full set for the show, including most of Inside Out & alot of Parallels. They did do a few older songs, but I am not really familiar with their older stuff... The sound was a little screwed up at the beginning, with alot of feedback... I didn't even recognize the first song until Ray started singing... They did some cool stuff, and had some cool stuff.... I'll post some spoilers later on if people are interested...

The club was TINY, and probably only held 100-200 people... I was really pissed off becuase soem asshole kept on pushing me and eventually got in front of me... I was ready to kill the asshole, and I think alot of the people around me were also rather pissed, but anyway, I was too into the music to get worry about him...

There are going to be at least a few tapes available from the show... I am getting one from one person & Chris Anderson is getting a different one from someone else...

Anyway, on to how I met the band... I got there sorta early, and I went in the club while it was still closed... I met someone from one of the opening bands (I talked to him over AOL... (martybass1 for those of you on AOL)) but anyway, they ended up kicking out all of the people that went in early except myself, b/c I was just standing there quietl, right by the door not bothering anyone... Anyway, I guess one of the road crew saw me there alone, and when they started letting everyone in, he overheard that I was from Boston, so asked me if I could possibly give 2 girls a ride back, and told me that they were close friends with Frank, so I figured, this could be my chance to get backstage, etc... Anyway, after the show (and after I exchanged phone numbers w/ someone who was taping the show :) I went up to the tour guy, and he tells me that they are the 2 selling the t-shirts in the back of the club... anyway, I hang around there, and eventually, they pack up... There were already people crowding around the tour bus, and Ray & one other guy (I forget who) was out there signing autographs, but Frank and one 2 others were still in the bus... The girls ask me if I want to go inside and meet them!!! I was so psyched... I talked to them for a few mins... It was really cool... I asked them about the tour w/ DT, and they said that they were anxious to start, even if they are only opening... Well... I guess that I have spent ewnough time rambling on, so I'll get going...

She is also a very nice person to talk to. We ended up chatting with her for a while while Mike was signing autographs, etc., and she was way cool. She's very like Mike in a lot of respects, and they seem right for each other. He is indeed a lucky man. Plus, she's in the same business as him, so at least they can relate to each others' work. 8-)

Well, if we are not able to get CDs made... I would be willing to start a tape tree or something like that... There are at least a few other people on the list that have all of the WDADU songs on CD, so it would be sorta easy for us to have a few tree leaders and get most people low generation copies...

    Post if you are interested...

They did play the SDV part in the Mirror, at least in Pittsburgh. I don't see the song sounding right without it. Unless they messed it up, you probably just didn't hear it.

here's the latest shirt info, etc again:

==================>>>>>>> T-SHIRT OFFER EXTRAVENGANZA <<<<<<================= To all those interested in t-shirts, hello once more! I am re-offering all my old shirts, including Paperlate and Dream Theater, since there have been a lot of requests for them. Their descriptions follow. I am also offering a new Fish "Suits" shirt, which is bound (hopefully) to be another winner. Be aware that I am also offering new colors of some styles, so be sure to specify color and size and style when ordering! Style refers to the word in quotes in each descr. title! ie. "Freaks" and "Classic Fish" are styles! Also, I am doing an order of Fish Boxers, for those "undercover" Fish fans. DT logo also available. Anyways, on with descriptions, info, etc...... ============================================================================ "FREAKS" SHIRTS/SWEATS INFO ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Front: The triangular jester 3" tall from the Thieving Magpie album cover. Back: "All the Best FREAKS Are Here" text, written in Zaph Chancery font, except for FREAKS, which is written in old Marillion-logo type font (see Script, Fugazi, etc for reference). COLORS AVAILABLE:

WHITE/ASH with black jester and text. "Freaks" written in burgundy with black trim.

BURGUNDY with off-white jester and text. "Freaks" written in off-white with black trim.

HUNTER Green shirt with same colors as above

BLACK shirt with off white jester and text. Freaks written in burgundy with off white trim. T-Shirts & sweatshirts are available in all colors as listed above.

================================================================================ "Classic FISH" SHIRTS/SWEATS INFO -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Front: The shirt front will be blank except for the left breast where it will read "The Company" in Mark Wilkinson style font. Underneath it will be a Scottish fish playing the bagpipes as seen in the Internal Exile CD liner notes, last page. Back: On the back there will be a large Fish logo in Wilkinson style as seen on the Internal Exile CD. Around the perimeter of this logo will be the words: "The Jester Is Dead! Long Live the Jester!"

    COLORS AVAILABLE:

WHITE/ASH: front design in black; back logo in orange & black with red text around logo. NAVY: front design in off white, back logo in same as white shirt.

T-Shirts & sweatshirts are available in all colors as listed above. ================================================================================ "NewLogo" SHIRTS/SWEATS Info -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Front: The shirt has a snow flake on the left breast from inside the season's end CD booklet(and cover) with the words around it: "Everybody in the Whole of the World Feels the Same Inside" Back: The back has a 9"x9" square Bill Smith Studio logo, with 2 dice in different configurations of 7(such as a 3 and 4) caddy corner in all four corners. Underneath the logo is the quote "i know a place you can't die" from "A collection". This shirt doesn't pertain to the current direction of the band, but a year ago it did and people seem to like it, so I still make it.

    COLORS AVAILABLE:

WHITE/ASH: ice blue snowflake w/black writing on the front. On the back there will be navy logo, black dice and text, with glow in the dark letters in square logo.

NAVY: on a navy shirt, ice blue snowflake w/off white text on the front. Back: ice blue square logo with glow in the dark letters, off white text and dice.

Across this will be the old Marillion logo, in red and yellow from the Thieving Magpie album. Back: Across the top will be "Burn a Little Brighter Now" in Black Chancery font in black. Underneath this quote will be a jester in four colors approximately 8" tall. This is also from the Thieving Magpie album.

    COLORS AVAILABLE:

WHITE/ASH: front design in forest green. Skull in pale greens and yellows and glow in dark. Back text in dark (forest) green.

It saves you and me time!!!! It is also nice if you include a phone number and address on your first order message to me. This way I can contact you quickly if I have a question, AND I can enter your address into my database immediately and don't have to search for it on an envelope, etc. Also, please send money as soon as I send confirmation! The sooner the better!

ALL shirts and sweatshirts are 100% cotton, pre-shrunk Hanes Beefy T's. (some shrinkage will still occur, but not much).

To the people that are first ordering from me, this is the way I handle it: I collect orders and money, then purchase the shirts and then send them out. It is a slow process sometimes, but prevents me from randomly ordering sizes-- this way I am not stuck with shirts no one wants. One last thing: I will confirm your order via e-mail, and when I do, I will tell what your order is and how much I expect. Please send me the money as soon as you can! The faster I get the money, the faster your shirts get to you! I will accept checks, money orders(postal or bank) or cash. Send money to:

I will try my damndest, but if you do order anj item as a gift, it will most likely be a late one! Sorry!

Send requests for orders to me at the address(es) below:

jgiles@crl.com (preferred ordering address) gilesmj@ccmail.apldbio.com (your last resort)

I got some interesting questions for everyone... this has sorta been discussed, but with the current tour, and the apparent packing of smaller clubs for this tour, it seems relevant to bring it up again...

I am on a Van Halen mailing list, and 2 or 3 people have mentioned their "close encounters" with the band... Any NOBODY else has even come close... meanwhile we are here discussing constant conversations with the band (and others like Fates Warning, etc) and how cool they are, and how they hang around with the fans...

This all leads me to question whether it would be good for DT to grow to a larger scale, along the lines of bands like VH or Rush... Bands where fans don't normally get to meet the band...

As much as it would be great if more people started getting into DT & FW, would it make the band less accessable to us? Anyway, this is always a difficult question for me to try to answer... What are the opinions of most of you?
