Warning. The contents that follow describe the DT/IME show and the
interaction between bands and discussion with band members, if you don't want
this Please Skip.
Review of the Dream Theater show 11/8/94 at the Mirage in Minneaplois, MN.
I Mother Earth was on stage giving quite a
performance. I had briefly listened to their CD, Dig before the show. I was
not super impressed by the CD, but live was different. There was
much more feel to the music live. They did alright. Plenty of long jams.
Their auxilary precusionist added some interesting instruments and sounds.
About 4 songs from the end of IME's part Mike Portnoy comes out dressed in
a white bathrobe and takes the mic. He started by saying that this was their
final show with IME and here is a tribute to them, he began, "There once was
a band called I Mother Earth....." ( I really don't recall the rest) But I
thought it was funny at the time, it seemed most people did not know who it
was and were slightly confused. Any when Mike was done, Edwin, the lead
singer, comes back up and says, "Well, If you don't know who that was... I
don't know why you are here." Then they went into there next tune.
During the next song, some guy dressed as a ghost wanders accrossed the
stage. Nothing really eventfull happens until the next tune. A keyboard is
setup and out walks this short dark haired guy. Edwin introduces him as
Derek, yep it was Derek. At the end of that song the Ghost reappears and
plays the Bongos.
During the next tune Portnoy and Petrucci come out and jammed with them. Then
the IME had their closing jam, just about half way through Mike, James,
John, and John spray the band down with silly string. They had an
absolute blast. Everthing was covered with silly string.
After a long break, Dream Theater opened.
All members of Dream Theater stepped on stage with I Mother Earth shirts on.
They opened with Pull Me Under. The main floor was crammed so I was up in the
balcony where I could get a good view. They sounded great, the light show was
perfectly in synch. I could see the floor was wild for the first few songs.
They were great, very tight, and an intense light show (too intense). They
played all the songs well. Derek seemed to be having a little fun up
there. He played well, at times he seemed like he was really concentrating
hard to make sure everything was just right. He pull Another day off with out
a hitch. The set list was basicly the same as previously mentioned except
they did not play The Ones Who Help to Set The Sun.
The only song that disappointed me was Silent Man. I am not sure what was
wrong it just did not seem right. Every Other song was I was in complete awe.
During Silent Man I happened to run into Edwin (Lead Singer IME) I briefly
spoke with him. He says they will have a new release out in June, and will be
touring Canada next.
I was able to get down stairs and 6 rows back before Metropolis began, It was
incredible, what a rush!!!
Afterwards:
We hung out by the DT bus along with probably 40 other people. Before too
long Derek came out and signed autographs and chatted with us. We talked
about a few things. He was very easy to talk with.
He asked us to
critique his performance, so I told the truth, he did very well and didn't
have any problems with Another Day this time. He agreed that he prevoiusly
did have problems on Another Day, but felt got it this time. He was then
asked to critique himself. He said that he thought he did a good job except
he messed up of the 2nd verse of Erotomania. I did not catch it, I don't
think anyone else did either.
He was asked what he thinks about playing the harmonies
with Petrucci. He replied, " Hairy, ... John is just so fast ... and some times
it is hard to keep up." He went on to say that it is much different than his
previous experiences (with Alice Cooper and KISS). When he was with Alice he
said that before the tour they would spend months practicing to get the whole
show down. This time a month before the first show he was not even familar
with Dream Theater, although he says he thought he heard Pull Me Under
before. Not only that but the technical aspect of the music was less complex
then.
Derek also mentioned that they did play some new stuff as an intro to Mirror.
He says that during sound checks they have been experimenting with new
stuff.
James Labrie was next to come out. There were a lot of people around him
wanting autographs, so it was difficult to talk to him. I had him sign my copy
of the Japanese AWAKE release flyer. I also asked him who the other two
people where in the picture. He confirmed my guess that they were the
producers John Purdell and Duane Baron. After I while I
remembered that I had wanted to get my Ytse Jam shirt that I was wearing signed.
So I went back to James and had him sign it on the right chest opposite the
Majesty symbol. He recognized the shirt and said, " Oh, I remember seeing one
of these before, You are on the Internet." I said "Yep." Then he was off
signing other things.
John Myung was next. He looked rather tired, so I just asked him for an
autograph on the back of the Yste Jam shirt and that was all.
John Petrucci tried to pull a fast one. He did not come out the rear doors
like Derek, James and John M. He came out a side door midst of group of
roadies carrying some equipment. I did not realize it was him until he was
getting on the bus. He was on the bus for a few minutes then came back out
to sign autographs. There was quite a crowd (20-25 people). I waited towards
the end, I asked him to sign the shirt. He did! As he was signing other
autographs I asked, "What book are you currently reading?" His reply was that
we was currently reading a book on how to write short stories. I then asked
so that is to improve your lyric writing. He replied, "Yes, I hope someday
to do a concept album." The surrounding fans gave a warm welcome to that
idea. And John smiled.
Mike, the final member, came out the rear door. He was greeted by 10-15 fans.
Again I waited towards the back. He signed the shirt Ytse Jam right above the
majesty symbol. I mentioned I saw the interview with him and James on Head
Bangers Ball. He asked me what I thought of it. I said well besides Ricky
being a dick and asking dumb questions, I said I liked it. I also said that
he had intelligent responses to Ricky's dumb questions. He said he did not like
Ricky that much either. He said that Ricky has a tendacy to ask a question
and not let the person fully respond to it and interupts them with another
question.
Some one next asked him about why the change from Mapex to Tama on his drums.
He said that the Mapex sound just as good as the Tama. He also said Mapex
had been activily pursuing him for quite awhile before Pull Me Under got
popular. Mapex brought him in talked with him and incorporated his ideas into
his custom drum set. It wasn't until later that Tama was interested in him.
Since Mapex was pursuing him because of who he was and not how big they
thought he would get, he went with them. The bus driver started revving the
engine and Mike had to say good bye.
By the way the Ghost was none other than Mike Portnoy. Who would have
guessed?
It was after 3:30 am, we began the trek home.

Don't waste your money - the version of "Bombay Vindaloo" on Guitar's
Practicing Musicians Volume 3 is directly off of LatM. The rest of the CD is
pretty uneventful if not completely disappointing as well (George Lynch of all
people has a track on the album that is pathetic!).

I was wondering if I might be able to save this CD deal if I pursue something along the lines of a fan club bootleg similar to Fish and Marillion's situation. I know that they clear all of these released with the label before hand, and they only do one printing of each. I need to find the address of the guy who handles their matters for Web USA (Dan I believe, I have his address somewhere) and ask him how Marillion's situation is. This is hopefully a possibility though it requires a lot of red tape, but it would be legal if I can pull it off. (Eric, you might be able to help me on this, since you checked into legality of this, let me know specifically what you found out, and we'll go from there if you would please)
As far as the voting for the title (moot?):
1. When Dream and LaBrie Unite 11
2. When Dream and James Unite 12
Still a very tight race...
Tape tree idea is still up in the air????
I checked out the DT interactive for Windows and I was impressed with what it could do for the size of the program, and the graphics were decent. Would have been nice if you could access all of the songs and if the samples were longer, but what do you want for free?
Later,
Mike

For anyone in the Denver area, I've been informed that the show rumoured for the 23rd in Colorado Springs is not going to happen.

Hi ! I=B4m a Swedish guy and just ReJoined the list. I wonder:
SDV: ( an incredible song ) What=B4s " Martens on angels". Is it a book? The only Martens they had in our library where a Swedish and a Finnish writer. Quite unlikely!? From where is the sampled talk from? some film ? The lines about "but i love you" gives me chills.
CD=B4name: If I=B4m not mistaken completely, I think that LaBrie=B4s real firstname was Kevin, but he had to change it to James, because it was enough trouble with 2 John. Is there gonna be CD=B4s. I would love to have those, but I certainl= y not want to be legal responsibel for that. One song that must be on is OAMOT, my fav song in those days.I didn=B4t know LaBrie does that song.
European Tour Dates: Does any of you know anything about when DT is heading for Europe and Sweden? All I=B4ve heard is sometime in Jan/Feb.
